Abstract

This study examines conceptual metaphor use in President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi's) pandemic economic speeches from 2020 to 2022, a period spanning the acute COVID-19 crisis through Indonesia's post-pandemic recovery. Drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP), with corpus-assisted analysis using AntConc, this study analyzes seven official speeches to identify dominant metaphorical frames and their rhetorical functions. The findings reveal that Jokowi's pandemic economic discourse is predominantly structured around a developmentalist metaphor system, with the Development Frame (14 instances) and Economy Frame (13 instances) together accounting for the majority of the 38 metaphorical expressions identified. Rather than foregrounding crisis as threat or danger, Jokowi consistently reframes the pandemic as a platform for economic transformation and forward movement. Key conceptual metaphors include development is a journey, economy is a living organism, and economy is a machine, all of which project active government agency and optimistic national trajectory. Crisis metaphors appear minimally and are quickly redirected toward development and recovery framing. This pattern is interpreted in relation to Jokowi's populist-developmentalist leadership ideology, which constructs political legitimacy through tangible outcomes and collective resilience rather than institutional reform or crisis dramatization. The findings contribute to the growing body of literature on political metaphor in non-Western contexts and offer implications for understanding how crisis communication strategies are shaped by ideological orientation and leadership identity.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of Indonesia’s economy, yet they continue to face constraints in production capacity, legality, and marketing. The presence of business incubators such as Rumah BerdayaCilegon (RBC) is vital to address these challenges. This study aimed to examine in depth the programs, implementation processes, roles, and impacts of RBC in enhancing MSME capacity in Cilegon City. A descriptive qualitative method was employed. Data were collected through participatory observation, unstructured in-depth interviews with RBC’s Chief Executive Officer and five assisted MSME actors, and document study. Data analysis was carried out interactively through three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that RBC runs four core programs: the Free Halal Certification for 1,000 MSMEs, Packaging Facilitation for 100 MSMEs, Production Capacity Enhancement Assistance, and an Entrepreneurship Incubation Program. All programs are implemented through integrated educative, facilitative, representative, and technical roles. The programs have proven effective in improving product quality, production efficiency, business legality, packaging competitiveness, and market access for MSMEs. The impacts include increased income, job creation, a shift towards an entrepreneurial mindset, strengthened community solidarity, and the establishment of cross-sector institutional partnerships. Hence, RBC plays a strategic role as a participatory and sustainable agent of MSME-based community economic empowerment.

Abstract

Recent research highlights teacher agency as a key factor in improving language teaching practices. This study investigates how reflective professional development strengthens teacher agency and supports EFL students' speaking competence in Indonesian secondary schools from a sociocultural perspective. A longitudinal qualitative design was employed involving six EFL teachers and their students across three public secondary schools. Data were collected through 40 hours of classroom video recordings and 12 hours of reflective dialogue sessions over six months. The findings indicate that reflective professional development enabled teachers to critically examine their instructional practices and enhance their use of dialogic questioning, contingent scaffolding, multimodal support, and adaptive pedagogical decision-making. These changes shifted classroom interaction from teacher-centered instruction toward more dialogic participation, leading to greater student engagement, increased negotiation of meaning, and improved speaking confidence. The study proposes a sociocultural model linking reflective professional development, teacher agency, and EFL students' speaking competence, offering implications for teacher professional learning and language education.

Abstract

Nowadays, electrical energy is an essential necessity in modern life. To meet the demand for electricity in various sectors, such as households, industry, business, and tourism, it is necessary to improve the quality, quantity, and reliability of electricity supply. Efforts to improve electrical energy services require cooperation between PLN as a provider and the community as a user. One form of community contribution in supporting service improvement is by moving electricity use from peak load time (WBP) between 18.00-22.00 to outside peak load time (LWBP) at 22.00-18.00. This study aims to analyze the effect of load shifting on consumer load factors and its impact on electricity bill components, including energy costs, street lighting taxes, and stamp duty costs, on medium-voltage customers. Data was collected through a survey at PT PLN (Persero) Bali Medium Voltage Service Area Distribution (APTM) and interviews with 73 customers as a sample. The results of the study show that the shift in load from WBP to LWBP significantly increases PLN's efficiency by distributing electricity more evenly to consumers. This method also improves the load factor, which contributes to cost savings in generation and distribution of electricity as the plant does not need to operate at maximum capacity. One effective way to reduce the load on electricity is to move consumption from night to morning or day.

Abstract

Student gangs are a social issue that can disrupt character development and the effectiveness of learning processes in schools. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of student gangs, the factors contributing to their formation, their impact on students’ behavior and Social Studies learning, and the implementation of a literacy approach as a strategy to address the issue at SMK TI Bali Global Denpasar. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that student gangs were characterized by the formation of exclusive groups with strong identities and solidarity. The factors contributing to gang formation included identity crises and low self-control, as well as peer influence, family conditions, social media, and insufficient school supervision. The existence of gangs contributed to aggressive behavior, bullying, student conflicts, and decreased effectiveness of Social Studies learning. The implementation of a literacy approach through case analysis, group discussions, critical reflection, and the use of digital media as learning resources was found to enhance students’ critical awareness, empathy, tolerance, and ability to understand and solve social problems constructively. Therefore, the literacy approach can serve as an effective preventive and corrective strategy in addressing student gang phenomena in schools.

Abstract

Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in Japan often face professional communication barriers due to cultural differences, language barriers, and digital literacy requirements. This community service program aims to equip members of PERMA UTLLN Japan and Indonesian migrant workers with professional communication skills, cross-cultural communication skills, digital ethics, and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through a mixed-method approach consisting of interactive webinars, case studies, and simulations via Zoom. Data from observations and discussions were evaluated using qualitative descriptive analysis techniques through thematic categorization. The program results demonstrated an increase in understanding of assertive communication in the workplace, a reduction in the risk of culture shock through the philosophy of omotenashi, and the acceleration of ethics-based digital literacy in utilizing AI as a communication assistant. In conclusion, the integration of communication training and applied technology literacy significantly enhances the adaptive capacity, career performance, and work-study balance of student-workers abroad. The novelty of this program lies in the reconstruction of an interdisciplinary training curriculum that simultaneously combines cross-cultural intelligence with practical AI skills—a new blend of competencies that has never been implemented in conventional migrant worker support programs.

Abstract

The increasing use of online loans among university students has raised concerns about its impact on academic behavior, particularly academic procrastination. Financial pressures from loan repayments may lead students to delay academic tasks and prioritize financial matters over their educational responsibilities. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic Religious Education in preventing academic procrastination among students who use online loans at Universitas Negeri Jakarta. A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving students and Islamic Religious Education lecturers. The findings indicate that students experienced academic procrastination in the form of delaying assignments, avoiding difficult tasks, and focusing on financial concerns. Islamic Religious Education contributed to reducing procrastination through the internalization of values such as discipline, responsibility, amanah (trustworthiness), time management, and self-control. These values helped students manage their academic obligations more effectively despite financial challenges. The study concludes that Islamic Religious Education plays an important role in preventing academic procrastination and strengthening students’ character development.
