Abstract

This study aims to analyze the gentrification that eliminates the urban cowboy community reflected in Ricky Staub's Concrete Cowboy (2020) and the impacts of gentrification on the urban cowboy community reflected in Ricky Staub's Concrete Cowboy (2020). The study employs a descriptive-qualitative approach to scrutinize Ricky Staub's Concrete Cowboy (2020) as its primary research objective. The research method's data analysis includes watching, reading, identifying, classifying, simplifying, and selecting. The research method involves displaying, explaining, and interpreting the data. The researcher analyzes the data using Gentrification Studies by Rowland Atkinson. The results of this research have shown that there is a process of elimination of the black urban cowboy community through gentrification with developers entering the Fletcher Street Stables area in Ricky Staub's Concrete Cowboy (2020). The impact of gentrification on urban cowboy communities can also be seen in Ricky Staub's Concrete Cowboy (2020), including four data on displacement and eviction, four data on community conflict and crime, four data on racial segregation, and one data on homelessness.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine Blue Bayou (2021), an American drama film written and directed by Justin Chon. The issues that need to be addressed are (1) how racism against Korean-American adoptees is portrayed in the movie, and (2) how society's response to racial differences is shown in Blue Bayou (2021). The purpose of this research study is to assess the film Blue Bayou (2021) through the use of a descriptive qualitative method. The study method's data collection steps include reading and watching, recognizing, categorizing, and choosing. using data collecting, data reduction, data display, and conclusion to analyze the research method's data. Data analysis techniques used by the researcher include exhibiting, explaining, and interpreting. The study's findings were as follows: (1) Racism can take many different forms, such as individual, systemic, and colorism. (2) The way that society responds to people of different races includes pity, empathy, ignorance, and punishing those who practice racism.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out (1) types of speech acts and (2) the function of types of speech acts spoken by Livi Redden on video "What Nobody Tells You About Your Twenties” (2018) on YouTube. The method used in this research is qualitative approach. The research reveals the intricate ways in which speech acts contribute to the effectiveness of Redden's communication and engagement with her audience. The object of this study is Livi Redden and the subject of this study is Livi Redden’s utterance. In collecting data, the techniques applied by the researcher are watching video, downloading transcript, picking, categorizing, and phrasing the data. To analyze the data, the researcher uses John R. Searle’s theory of speech act. It is done through some steps as displaying, explaining, and intrepreting. The findings provide insights into the performative aspects of online discourse, highlighting the role of speech acts in shaping viewers' understanding and responses.The result of this research shows that: first, the types of speech acts in the video which spoken by Livi Redden exists in this study. Those are; assertive, expressive, commissive, directive, declarative. Second, the functions of the types of speech acts according to Livi Redden’s utterance, those are; commanding, refusal, espressing feelings, blaming, predicting, claiming.

Abstract

The purpose of the thesis is to find out the Id, Ego, and Superego of the main characters, that is, Gregor Samsa, the traveling salesman who transforms into a giant insect, and Metamorphosis, written by Franz Kafka and published in 1915. The method used in this study is descriptive-qualitative. The technique of collecting data is reading the novel repeatedly and underlying the necessary lines and quotations in the novella. The result shows that there are 24 quotations, which consist of 9 quotations of Id, 6 quotations of Ego, 7 quotations of Superego, and 2 most prominent reflections on Kafka’s personal life.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is crucial for effective communication and understanding in English. In Indonesia, the Merdeka Curriculum promotes student-centered learning and emphasizes creativity and collaboration. However, many students find English challenging and struggle with vocabulary retention. To address this, a motivating approach is needed, such as Cooperative Learning using the Switch Game method. This method fosters group collaboration among students of varying abilities, enhancing interaction and making vocabulary learning enjoyable. The study aims to investigate the Implementation of this approach in improving elementary students' vocabulary mastery and recommendations for educators in designing effective learning strategies. The aim of this research is to explore the implementation of a cooperative learning method using the Switch Game to enrich vocabulary in English learning at the elementary school level. The study will involve various group activities with students of different abilities, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing. Utilizing a quantitative pre-experimental design with pretest and posttest, the sample consists of 12 Student of fifth-grade students at MI GUPPI Sumberwulan,Selomerto. Data will be collected through vocabulary tests conducted before and after the cooperative learning implementation. The teacher's role will be to motivate and provide learning media. Students will participate in the Switch Game within a cooperative environment, making learning enjoyable. The expected outcome is an enrichment of vocabulary and increased motivation and interest in learning through interactive games, encouraging the development of student-centered and collaborative learning methods that enhance student outcomes.

Abstract

One of the English language skills that must be mastered is writing. It serves as a tool to transfer ideas in written form. In cognitive ability, writing activities fall into the level of creation, which is one of the levels of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills). The objective of this research is to determine whether there is an improvement in writing skills and an increase in HOTS among students using Monopoly games. The method used in this research is the quantitative method. This study focuses on a pre-experimental design with two groups for pre-test and post-test. Data are collected through questionnaires, tests, and documentation. The results of the research indicate that using Monopoly games significantly enhances writing skills among students. The subjects in this study consist of 42 students from class X AKL 1 and X PPLG 1, who undergo pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The test results are analyzed using the Paired Sample T-test in SPSS 27. The findings reveal that the average score of the pre-test was 52.7, while the post-test score was 77.4. These figures indicate that the post-test score is higher than the pre-test score, suggesting that the use of Monopoly games has a substantial impact on students' writing skills. It can be concluded that the Monopoly Game media can be used to enhance the writing skills of students in English learning for class X students of SMK Andalusia Wonosobo.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze haphephobia represented in the main character of the drama series entittled I am not a Robot (2017). The are two formulations in this research. First, how are the symptoms of haphephobia reflected in Kim Min Kyu in “I am not a Robot” drama series (2017) and how does Kim Min Kyu overcome as the sufferer of haphephobia. The researchers use qualitative methods to describe and explain the data. The researchers collect data by watching movies and reading subtitles from the drama I am not a Robot. In this study the researcher used theory of Sigmund Freud. The results of the study that the researcher found many symptoms related to haphephobia such as being fear of human touch, and panic attack, body shaking or tremors, dizzy, nauseous, heartbeat pounding, fast or short breathing, and crying. The main character has three ways to overcome haphephobiareflected in the movie such as psychotherapy, administration drugs, relaxation technique.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the representation of sexism in Philipa Lowthorpe’s Misbehaviour (2020) and the society’s view towards women in the 1970’s in Philipa Lowthorpe’s Misbehaviour (2020). This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the film of Misbehaviour (2020) directed by Philipa Lowthorpe as the object research. The data collection methods include watching, reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The researcher utilizes Peter Glick and Susan T. Fiske’s theory of Ambivalent Sexism to analyze the data through steps of displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The result of this research shows that: the representation of sexism in in Philipa Lowthorpe’s Misbehaviour (2020) includes hostile sexism behaviors such as women inferiority and sexual objectification, and also benevolent sexism behaviors like paternalism, gender differentiation, and heterosexuality, the society’s view towards women in the 1970s that still restricted and narrow includes the way the society perceives women through the lens of Miss World beauty pageant, the persistence of gender stereotypes that reinforced traditional roles, the acknowledgment of the Women’s Liberation Movement, and the media representation of women during that period.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze : (1) kinds of speech act are present in the dialogue film Anyone But You (2023), (2) what functions of speech act are present in the dialogue of the film Anyone But You (2023). This study examines the movie using a descriptive, qualitative approach entitled Anyone But You (2023) directed by Will Gluck as the objective research. The collecting data of the research method includes watching and reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The analyzing data of the research method by using displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The data is analyzed by the researcher using a pragmatic approach with Speech Act and Halliday’s Language Function theory. The result of the research : (1) all kinds of illocutionary speech act are present in the film Anyone But You (2023) such as declarative, representative, expressive, directive, and commissive; (2) language functions are present in the dialogue of the movie Anyone But You (2023) are in the form of seven language functions, that are regulatory function, instrumental function, representational function, interactional function, heuristic function, personal function, and imaginative function.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the representation of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy in Aneesh Chaganty’s Run, and the mental condition of the charachter who suffers from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy in Aneesh Chaganty’s Run (2020). The method used in this research is qualitative approach. The object of this study is Aneesh Chaganty’s Run and the subject of this study is the dialogues between the characters and action pictures in Aneesh Chaganty’s Run. In collecting data, the techniques applied by the researcher are watching, reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. To analyze the data, the researcher uses Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy study and Johari window’s theory of psychology. It is done through some steps as displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The result of this research shows that: first, the representations of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy in the main character who suffers from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy exists in this study. Those are; Striving to appear self-sacrificing and devoted, inducing symptom to her child, concerned about child’s health, being very knowledgeable about medical stuff, switch doctors and medical staff, falsifying diseases symptom. Second, the mental condition of the charachter who suffers from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy reflect a balance and wholeness of her personality. It is described through 3 points, those are; manipulative behaviour, maladaptive daydreaming behaviour, and suffered from depression.
