Abstract

Objectives: The study determined the competencies of teachers and performance of learners in 2017-2018 National Achievement Test. It identified the influence of teachers’ competencies on performance of learners. Methods: It employed descriptive-correlational and explanatory designs and it involved three divisions in Northern Mindanao region, Philippines.   Findings: The Grade 10 and 6 teachers have possessed very satisfactory competencies across areas, while the Grade 10 and Grade 6 learners had a low mastery and very low mastery, respectively. Furthermore, there was no significant relationship between the competencies of teachers and the performance of learners, while their competencies did not significantly influence the performance of learners. Conclusion: Teachers were deemed competent in all areas and learners had not acquired most of the competency standards of the curricula. Hence, no matter how competent teachers are, this would not contribute significantly to improving the performance of learners in the National Achievement Test. Thus, competencies of teachers cannot determine the performance of learners. Keywords: competencies of teachers, performance of learners, national achievement test.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i2.202212

Frequency counts, percentage, and weighted average mean were used in analyzing the data. Findings: The result revealed that offering BSISM in JHCSC is feasible as to the management viability, market viability, operation viability, and location, as well as industry viability. Conclusion: Competent and qualified teachers and staff are required for the long-term viability of the new program offering, with the availability of teaching resources being a secondary consideration in the decision to offer such a program. Location and future demand must also be given attention prior to proposing a new course. Keywords: industrial security, security profession, market demand viability.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v11.i3.202111

Abstract

The Level of Writing Apprehension on Students; EFL Writing Class: A Case Study. Objective: This study aims to investigate the level of writing apprehension among students enrolled in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing class, specifically within the Expository and Argumentative Writing Course; Methods: The qualitative case study design involved 35 undergraduate students from the English Education Department IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. Data was collected using a modified version of Daly and Miller (1975) Writing Apprehension Questionnaire (WAQ). Open-ended responses were analzed using descriptive statistics and thematic coding. Findings: The results revealed varying levels of writing apprehension. Approximately 40% of the students experienced writing apprehension, which impacted their capacity to use language, structure their ideas, and use grammar. On the other hand, 63% of participants said they felt less nervous, which they attributed to their prior success and growing confidence in their writing. Qualitative research revealed several pertinent factors, such as poor language skills, past academic setbacks, and fear of a negative evaluation. It was discovered that methods like peer review, process writing, and self-control were effective in reducing apprehension. Conclusion: Writing apprehension is a prevalent issue in EFL settings that necessitates targeted instructional interventions. This study highlights the importance of using supportive writing pedagogies to help students become more confident and proficient writers. Further research into the long-term effectiveness of apprehension-reduction strategies is necessary, especially in digital or hybrid writing contexts, as the findings highlight the emotional challenges faced by EFL students. Keywords: EFL writing, writing apprehension, writing achievement.

Abstract

An error analysis of EFL undergraduate student’ writing composition. This study has thoroughly investigated morpho-syntactic errors in the compositions of English Language Education undergraduates at Universitas Tanjungpura. Employing a descriptive methodology and drawing from Ellis (1994), the research analyzed 97 self-descriptive compositions. The findings reveal a significant prevalence of morpho-syntactic errors, totaling 793 syntactical and 333 morphological errors across an average of 18 sentences per composition. Syntax errors involve sentence patterns and subject-verb agreement, while morphological errors revolve around inflection and conversion challenges. Categorized into omissions, additions, misinformations, and misorderings using a surface strategy taxonomy, the errors provide insights into students' linguistic competence. The study advocates for targeted instructional interventions, integrated curriculum development, cross-linguistic awareness programs, and learner-centered approaches. Longitudinal studies and teacher training programs are recommended for a deeper understanding of error evolution and effective pedagogical implementation, contributing to the discourse on morpho-syntactic errors in EFL writing with practical implications for language instruction. Keywords: Error analysis, morpho-syntactic error, self-descriptive compositionDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i3.202331
