Abstract

Optimizing Human Capital in School Management: The Principal’s Role in Enhancing Educational Service Effectiveness. This research evaluates school principals' performance in improving education quality through a human capital approach. School principals have a strategic role in managing school human resources to create effective and quality educational services. This research uses a qualitative approach with evaluative methods to analyze the implementation of human capital at Lentera Ambarawa Christian Elementary School. The research results show that strategies for increasing the competency of teaching staff, optimizing administrative staff, and implementing a data-based evaluation system contribute to improving the effectiveness of schools as public services. However, there are still challenges in strengthening the reward system and continuous training for education staff. Therefore, a more systematic and sustainable human capital management policy is needed to ensure that every policy implemented positively impacts the quality of education. Keywords: principal, human capital, education quality, performance evaluation, public services.

Abstract

Natural Acid-Base Indicators as Home-based Experiments: Feasibility, Satisfaction, and Teachers’ Experiences in Secondary Science Blended Instruction. Objectives: Common plants in the community can be used as acid-base indicators in laboratory experiments for blended learning in Chemistry. With this, the researchers conducted a study on the feasibility of the home-based experiments as well as the satisfaction and experiences of secondary-level teachers. Methods: Through a stratified random sampling from northern, southern, and metro Cebu in Central Visayas, Philippines, 45 teachers performed the experiment, answered the survey questionnaire, and were interviewed about their experiences. Data was collected and analyzed using descriptive and thematic analyses. Findings: The results showed that the home-based experiments were very feasible in terms of independent learning (μ=4.52, SD=0.50), resource availability (μ=4.25, SD=0.43), and safety considerations (μ=4.28, SD=0.68), as well as feasible according to adult supervision (μ=2.48, SD=1.06). Moreover, the experiments produced a very positive experience (μ=4.72, SD=0.40), which can be attributed to resource availability (ρ=0.574, p=0.000) and safety considerations (ρ=0.415, p=0.004). Furthermore, the teachers encountered opportunities, overcame challenges, and proposed improvements to the experiment. Conclusion: The home-based experiments on natural acid-base indicators are very feasible and highly satisfactory. Keywords: acid-based indicators, home-based experiments, secondary chemistry blended instruction.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i2.202334

Abstract

How Do I Unlearn You? Towards Designing an Approach in Unlearning Negative Habits. Objectives: The study intends to explore and understand the unlearning process, as grounded from the experiences of teachers and students of Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (Values Education in the Philippines) towards developing a new approach in teaching the aforementioned subject area. Methods: Interviews were conducted to 33 respondents from a private Catholic school, and transcripts were analyzed through the techniques of thematic analysis and grounded theory. Findings: The adolescents’ negative habits, as well as teachers’ facilitation practices generated substantial themes such as: (1) need for a strong sense of self; (2) difficulty of unlearning due to various “blocks”; (3) instruments to unlearn; and (4) role of teachers as empathic individuals. These codes then led to the final product of the study as E.L.S.A.’s approach to unlearn (Empowering the Self, Letting Go, Starting a New Life, and Action), which may be utilized as schools’ pedagogical framework in producing classroom-based materials in facilitating values formation. Conclusion: The idea of unlearning is not an experimental process or behavioral modification. It only explored the concept and process of unlearning, but did not necessarily aim to make unlearning take place on the psyche of the students. Keywords: Unlearning negative habits, edukasyon sa pagpapakatao (values education), teaching approaches, adolescence, thematic analysis. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v9.i2.201902
