Abstract

Achievement Profiles in Math, Science, and English: Exploring Contextualized Sex Differences. Objectives: The study used a person-oriented approach to explore sex differences at the level of achievement profiles and describe such differences in the context of urban/rural schools. Methods: The achievement test scores in math, science and English of 2,408 tenth graders sampled from the database of the Center for Educational Measurement (CEM) in the Philippines  were used to derive achievement profiles through cluster analysis. Findings: Four profiles were derived: 1) Low Achievers, 2) True Average Achievers, 3) High Achievers with weak math and science skills, and 4) High Achievers with strong math and science skills. Significant sex and urban/rural school differences among the profiles were found. The “female advantage” was more evident among Low Achievers, but not among High Achievers. When the urban/rural school context was considered, the female advantage tended to disappear and the urban school advantage became more apparent. Finally, High Achievers with weak math and science skills were mostly females in urban schools. Conclusion: The findings suggest that it was important to situate sex differences in context in order to understand achievement in key courses, such as STEM, of young children. Keywords: sex differences, urban and rural schools, achievement profiles, cluster analysis, FilipinoDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i1.202308

Abstract

Parenting in the Digital Age. Objectives: This study explores the parents' experiences in the digital age and determines the problems they encountered with children's use of digital technology, the different parenting styles they employed, and how they cope with the high-technology, fast-paced times that their children live in. Methods: It used a qualitative hermeneutical phenomenological approach. It strongly relies on the researcher's interpretations of their lived experience. Findings: The participants identified problems in discipline, academic, health, and social aspects of the child. Different parenting styles were employed by the participants but varied depending on the age of their children. Participants also highlighted their ways of managing children's misbehavior using digital technology. They set house rules like giving screen time, rewards and punishment, watching together, and open communication. Conclusion: Parents should find the right way to manage their children's misbehavior using digital technology and encourage their children to be with their friends and refrain from holding gadgets during playtime.  Keywords: Parenting styles, digital age, technology use.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i2.202237

Abstract

Comparison of problem based learning and realistic mathematics education to improve student academic performance. Objectives: The aim of this study was to see an increase in the academic performance of island students in Ambon City by applying the problem based learning (PBL) learning model and realistic mathematics education (RME). Methods: This research was in the form of a descriptive qualitative study with a case study approach and a sample of 116 students. Findings: There was a significant increase in student academic performance at each meeting and learning outcomes with PBL were higher than RME. Conclusion: The PBL model is more effective in increasing students’ academic performance than RME because students were facilitated with onlinebased media in PBL when compared to RME, so that it can attract students’ attention in learning and have a significant impact on student academic performance. Keywords: Academic performance, problem-based learning, realistic mathematics education DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v9.i2.201921

Abstract

This study focused on the development of a scale that can be used to identify difficulties in printed modular distance learning from the perspective of learners. Extant literature was analyzed, and 20 learners were interviewed aimed at identifying difficulties. Insights from both literature and interviews served as the basis for the writing of 23 items on the initial scale, distributed under seven themes. Ten learners were asked to participate in the trial run, and 619 learners participated in the test administration. With responses during the test administration, means and standard deviations were computed, and scale reliability was evaluated using Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha formula, while factor analysis was used to evaluate scale validity. Six factors were retained after factor analysis. The scale developed is psychometrically sound and can identify difficulties in printed modular distance learning, as can be observed from the results of its reliability and validity evaluation. Keywords: distance learning, modular learning, scale developmentDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i3.202333

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the relationship between teacher emotional intelligence and teacher perception regarding their relationship with students. Methods: This study uses a cross-sectional design with simple linear regression analysis was used to measure the effect of emotional intelligence to teacher-student relationships. Teacher emotional intelligence was measured using Schutte’s Emotional Intelligence Scale (SEIS), while student-teacher relationship was measured using Student-Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS). Findings: Linear regression analysis from 1420 participants showed that there is significant effect of teacher emotional intelligence to student-teacher relationship. Conclusion: The implication of this research is developing and maintaining teacher emotional intelligence is importance because have impact in their relationship with students. Keywords: emotional intelligence, teacher-student relationship, teacher emotion, teacher and student.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i2.202350

Abstract

Objectives: The study aims to examine the relationship between parents' socioeconomic status and the academic achievement of public high school students in Tangerang Municipality. Methods: This research is a cross-sectional study of 660 (Cochran formulation with a sampling error of 3.7%) students from a total of 6,551 public senior high schools.. The author utilized a random sampling technique. The primary data was obtained through a questionnaire that has been tested for validity and reliability. The questionnaires were distributed to the participants using the students' WhatsApp groups. The author used a binary logit regression model for data analysis. Findings: The results showed that socioeconomic status significantly impacted on student academic achievement. Parents of students with high socioeconomic status were more likely to improve their child's academic results. Meanwhile, the composition of parents' socioeconomic status that contributes more dominantly to increasing academic achievement is the father's income and education and the mother's education, but not the mother's income and asset. Conclusion: Thus, one of the determinants of the academic achievement of high school students is the socioeconomic condition of their parents. The results of this study provide not only an expansion of the education science and education economics literature but also empirical implications for parents and secondary education policymakers. Keywords: academic achievement, assets, parental income, education.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i2.202318

Abstract

Toward a Tripartite Model of EFL Students’ Learning Strategies, Epistemic Beliefs, and Their Online Learning Engagement. Objectives: The main objective of this study is to understand the link between these factors. This research explored the link among EFL students’ learning, beliefs about learning, learning strategies, and learning engagement since they are key factors in influencing them to learn English. Methods: This research applied quantitative research, notably correlational design among EFL epistemic belief, learning strategies which later is consisted of reading, speaking, and writing, and online learning engagement. Findings: The findings of structural equation modeling showed that EFL epistemic beliefs are associated with learning strategies and online learning engagement in a significant and positive way. Conclusion: Theoretical and methodological implications for studies of epistemic beliefs, learning strategies, and online learning engagement are explored. Keywords: tripartite model, EFL students, epistemic belief, learning strategies, online learning engagement.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i3.202215
