Abstract

This paper will examine the learning and application of citizenship values among learners in the schools in Ghana and Indonesia. The countries consider their citizenship education to be a major factor towards the national development and social peace. The study adhered to the Social Learning Theory, Cultural Theory, and Civic Education Theory and employed qualitative/comparative descriptive design. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews, open-ended questionnaires, classroom observations, and review of documents. The information was given by fifty respondents who consisted of twenty-five students and teachers in Ghana and twenty-five in Indonesia. Our data were examined using the six-step thematic analysis developed by Braun and Clarke and manually. Both Ghana and Indonesia have their values of citizenship shaped by local culture and life in schools. The citizenship as perceived by students in Ghana is largely based on respect to authority, discipline, responsibility, honesty, and obedience which are aspects that reflect on communal traditions and hierarchal norms. Pancasila values that were identified as important by the participants in Indonesia included tolerance, harmony, cooperation (gotong-royong), politeness, and unity in diversity. Teaching styles also varied. Ghanaian educators’ resort to direct moral teaching and disciplinary direction. Indonesian teachers integrate the lessons about citizenship into the school routines, the cooperative learning process as well as into multicultural discussions. Civic conduct is strengthened by school activities, Ghana has assemblies, prefect leadership and Indonesia has piket kelas (class duty) and flag ceremonies. The issues that both nations have in common, however, are peer pressure, the lack of parental support, and excessive use of social media. In short, the study concludes that effective citizenship education occurs when the cultural identity, school culture and teacher role models are aligned and when school, family and communities are working hand in hand. The study provides comparative information on culture-based civic education and supports the evidence-based recommendations to enhance teacher training, curriculum design, school routines, digital citizenship programs, and involvement of the community in Ghana and Indonesia.

Abstract

Changes in family structure in Indonesia have shifted gender role divisions, including the increasing number of mothers serving as primary breadwinners. However, how Generation Z adolescents interpret this change remains underexplored, despite their critical stage of identity formation, openness to gender equality, and exposure to social and digital influences shaping family perspectives. This study aims to examine the social construction of Generation Z adolescents regarding mothers’ roles as primary breadwinners by considering personal experiences, family interactions, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved six adolescents aged 18–21 from upper, middle, and lower economic classes. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that socioeconomic class shapes each stage of adolescents’ social construction, from externalization and objectivation to internalization. Upper-class adolescents perceive working mothers as a conscious choice and self-actualization, middle-class adolescents view it as family negotiation and cooperation, while lower-class adolescents regard it as an economic necessity and a form of family resilience. Academically, this study contributes to family and gender sociology from a cross-class adolescent perspective. Practically, the findings inform educators, communities, and policymakers in strengthening gender literacy, social studies education, and contextsensitive family empowerment programs.

Abstract

This study responds to the persistent challenge of low learning discipline in non-formal social studies programs by developing and testing a module. This study aims to (1) analyze the implementation of the teaching module on social interaction that has been used so far, (2) develop a teaching module on social interaction based on the character value of discipline and assess the feasibility of the module, and (3) analyze the effectiveness of the module in improving student discipline. This study uses the Research and Development method with the ADDIE model. The research begins with a needs analysis through observation, interviews, and focus group discussions. The design and development stage produces a module based on the value of Discipline. The validity of the content and practicality are evaluated by two experts. The results show that the module is in the feasible to highly feasible category, requiring only minor technical revisions. The module was implemented for students. Effectiveness was tested through a single-group pretest-posttest design involving 30 students, using a Discipline questionnaire. The average discipline score increased from 25.00 (62.5% of the maximum score) to 30.33 (75.8%), and the difference was statistically significant at p = 0.001 (p < 0.05) with a moderate to large effect size. The study concluded that the module was effective in strengthening student discipline and contributed as a context-based character education resource for Community Learning Centers.

Abstract

A value holds profound meaning for a community. Such values are embedded in the everyday life of society and are subsequently passed down from generation to generation, although they are often unconsciously practiced by the community itself. Existing and prevailing values have been proven to shape social behaviors through intense positive social interactions and the involvement of various stakeholders. This study focuses on three main aspects: (1) exploring local wisdom values that exist within the community; (2) uncovering the process of value transmission that has been maintained across generations; and (3) analyzing community behavior through the existing values. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach and utilizes observation, interviews, and documentation techniques to collect data, which are then condensed, presented, and concluded. The findings of this study indicate that: (1) the values practiced by artisans and the community accumulate into values of responsibility and care; (2) the process of value transmission involves families, coworkers, the surrounding community, community leaders, and religious leaders; and (3) these values are able to shape responsible behavior among artisans and a “relaxed” attitude among the community in general.

Abstract

Social behavioral degradation among students, including bullying, low empathy, and weakening social values, reflects a persistent gap between the ideals of Social Studies (IPS) education and its classroom implementation. Grounded in George Herbert Mead's Symbolic Interactionism theory, this study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach to examine how IPS teachers and students construct meaning in learning interactions and how this process shapes students' social behavior in junior high schools in Brebes Regency. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation across three schools using purposive and snowball sampling. The findings reveal that teachers have reframed IPS as a medium for character formation enacted through contextual methods, direct habituation, and symbolic classroom interactions. Students construct meaning primarily through teacher modeling, with internalized values manifesting in concrete prosocial behaviors. Sustained synergy among teachers, school programs, and family support is essential to transform cognitive understanding into genuine social behavioral commitments. Theoretically, this study contributes to understanding how symbolic interaction in educational settings shapes students' self-concept and social behavior. Practically, the findings offer actionable insights for teachers, school policymakers, and curriculum developers seeking to strengthen character-based education through IPS learning.

Abstract

The digitalization of public services has become a key strategy for improving the accessibility and efficiency of healthcare delivery in Indonesia. As part of this transformation, BPJS Kesehatan introduced the Mobile JKN application to simplify administrative processes and expand public access to National Health Insurance (JKN) services. Although previous studies have primarily focused on its effectiveness and user satisfaction, limited attention has been given to its role within the broader e-welfare framework. This study aims to examine the role of the Mobile JKN application in improving public access to healthcare services from an e-welfare perspective. The study employs a qualitative literature review using the Information Systems Success Model by DeLone and McLean and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by Davis as analytical frameworks. The novelty of this study lies in integrating these two models with the concept of e-welfare to provide a more comprehensive understanding of Mobile JKN as both a digital healthcare service innovation and a digital welfare instrument. The findings indicate that Mobile JKN simplifies administrative procedures, improves time efficiency, and provides integrated healthcare information through a single digital platform. However, several barriers continue to limit the optimal use of Mobile JKN, particularly disparities in digital access, inadequate digital literacy, limited internet and device availability, and technical and data synchronization issues across healthcare facilities. These findings highlight that advancing digital healthcare services involves more than improving technology alone; it also requires stronger institutional capacity, better digital infrastructure, and greater user preparedness to ensure equitable access to healthcare.

Abstract

The phenomenon of religious instrumentalization in identity politics ahead of the election is becoming an increasingly relevant issue in contemporary Muslim society. The use of symbols, narratives, and religious sentiments in political contestation often no longer functions as a means of moral education, but as an instrument of electoral mobilization that has the potential to trigger social polarization. This research aims to analyze the practice of religious instrumentalization in identity politics ahead of the election through the perspective of fiqh siyasah and examine the relevance of fiqh siyasah principles in modern democracy. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a literature study approach that examines various scientific literature, books, and articles related to identity politics, religious politicization, and fiqih siyasah. The novelty of this research lies in the effort to integrate the principles of classical and contemporary fiqh to evaluate the practice of identity politics in the context of modern democracy. The results of the study show that the use of religion as a tool for political legitimacy is contrary to the principle of justice (al-'adl), deliberation (asy-shura), trust, and benefit which is the basis of the syar'iyyah siyasah. This practice has the potential to shift democracy from the arena of exchanging ideas into an identity conflict that divides society. This research emphasizes the importance of strengthening political literacy, digital literacy, and moderate religious understanding to maintain the function of religion as a source of public ethics and social adhesive. The implication of this research is expected to be a reference for academics, religious figures, and policy makers in building a more inclusive and cultural political culture.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low learning interest of students in Social Studies subjects at SMP Negeri 21 Samarinda, caused by the dominance of lecture methods and the use of textbooks. This study aims to determine the effect of using quartet card media on the learning interest in Social Studies of Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 21 Samarinda. This research uses a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design (Nonequivalent Control Group Design). Data analysis techniques used the Independent Sample T-Test and Effect Size test with the help of SPSS version 29. The results showed a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05, so H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted, and the Effect Size test produced a value of 0.835, which falls into the high effect category. The novelty of this research lies in three aspects: (1) the application of quartet card media in Social Studies learning at the junior high school level, a context that is still limited. (2) This research contributes theoretically by operationalizing learning interest indicators—interest, attention, engagement, and enjoyment—within the framework of game-based learning to enrich the understanding of how interactive media fosters students' learning interest. (3) methodological contribution through the use of the Effect Size test to measure the magnitude of the effect, which is still rarely applied in similar studies. The contribution of this research is to provide an alternative learning media for teachers to foster students' interest in learning Social Studies.

Abstract

This study examines the history and development of the Semende Kuntau martial art in Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra. Semende Kuntau is a form of local cultural heritage that serves not only as a martial art but also as a medium for transmitting cultural, moral, and religious values from one generation to the next. This study aims to examine the historical development, social functions, and preservation efforts of Semende Kuntau in the face of modernization. The research employed the historical research method by utilizing written sources and oral sources obtained through interviews with community leaders and Kuntau practitioners. The findings indicate that Semende Kuntau has existed since the eighteenth century and was initially transmitted through certain family lineages before gradually becoming an integral part of the community's customary and cultural activities. Over time, its function shifted from a means of self-defense to a traditional performance art presented during customary ceremonies, particularly wedding celebrations. Modernization has contributed to a decline in young people's interest in learning Kuntau. However, since 2010, various preservation efforts have been undertaken through the establishment of martial arts schools, regular training programs, and participation in cultural events. Therefore, Semende Kuntau continues to survive as an important cultural identity of the Semende community, possessing significant historical and philosophical values.
