Abstract

Background: The conversion value of ~-carotene to vitamin A is dependlng on the kind of foods. The ratio is about 11 : 1 for fruit and 31 : 1 for vegetable, but the conversion value of dried vegetables had not known yet. Objective: To determine the conversion value of carotene dried vegetable to vitamin A. Method: The study was conducted using 35 white mice strain KLMR (Lembaga Makanan Rakyat)", which bred in Center for Research and Development Nutrition and Food, Bogar. Thirty five mice were divided into the 5 groups: first group (I} was given low vitamin A feeding contained 1 μg vitamin A per gram; the groups 11, 111, IV and V were given food which contained ~-carotene 30 μg per gram from pure ~carotene, young cassava leaf, old cassava leaf, and carrot. Analysis of blood for vitamin A and ~-carotene before and after of study was done using HPLC (High Performance liquid Chromatography). Result: The study concluded that the conversion value of ji-carotene to vitamin A is 17: 1, the ~-carotene of young cassava leaf is 20 : 1 and carrot is 23 ; 1. [Penel Gizi Makan 2006, 29(2): 92-97)

Abstract

Background: Several studies showed that among students at elementary school, undernutrition and overnulrition are still a nutrition problem. It was reported that undernutrilion among school students is 35% and 25% for male and female, respectively. However, the prevalence of overnulrition is 9% and 11% for male and female respectively. Objective: To analyze the association between student characteristics, parent characteristics, and nutritional status of student at public elementary school, namely KB4 in Banjarmasin city. Methods: The school was chosen because it was a pilot school in this city. Students selected purposively in grade IV, V, and VI so that the total of students was 190. The nutritional status assessed and catagorized using WAZ of WHO-NCHS standard. Results: The study indicated that prevalence of undeiweight was 20.5%. There was a significant association between nutrition status and having daily breakfast, mother's educational level, mother's nutrition knowledge, and parent's income. While purchase food at school jajan, student's nutrition knowledge, tafher's education level, mother's occupation status, and total member in family were not associated significantly with student"s nutritional status. Recommendations: It suggested that students should be bi-annual weighed continuosly. Teachers or parents should give nutrition education, especially about the importance of breakfast. The cooperation between Ministry of Health and Ministry of National Education needed especially to put nutrition subject formally in elementary school curriculum and to mass media for educating the community. Since decentralization adopted, the local government should pay attention to the economic sector to achieve better economic status of the community and the reach a better purchasing power on quality of food. Abstract

Obesity is a global pandemic that is closely related to the emergence of non-communicable diseases and premature death. Although obesity results from excess energy intake, deficiency of other nutrients are commonly found. Therefore, the use of the term overnutrition to describe obesity creates misperceptions. The objective of this review was to provide the evidence of a nutritional deficiency condition in obesity that can be used as a basis for considering the use of the term in Indonesia. The review was performed with unstructured literature search on several databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Although obesity is caused by excess intake of macronutrients, the results of this review showed that many studies reported micronutrient deficiencies were present in people with obesity. The deficiencies were commonly reported, including deficiency of vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, iron, calcium, and phosphor. The main causes were the habit of consuming food with a high content of macronutrients, but low in micronutrients, and metabolic consequences of body fat accumulation. Moreover, the deficiencies of micronutrients contributed to an increased risk of diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Meanwhile, the Global Nutrition Report has not used the term overnutrition, instead to use overweight and obesity. Therefore, the use of the term in Indonesia to describe obesity needs to be further reviewed. However as this is a narrative review, more comprehensive and systematic review is still needed.

Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension in Kalimantan, Indonesia, remains higher than the national average. This study aimed to examine the risk factors for hypertension that are relevant for people in the area. This observational study used a cross-sectional design using secondary data from the latest Basic Health Research (Riskesdas 2018). The dependent variable of this study is hypertension status, while the independent variables consist of sociodemographic status, nutritional status, health status and dietary habits. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was carried out to see the relationship of potential risk factors as independent variables with the subject's hypertension status. This research shows that 21.2% of non-pregnant adult subjects in Kalimantan have high blood pressure or hypertension. The results of statistical analysis show that significant risk factors for high blood pressure for this population include age, gender, education level, job category, smoking status, being an alcohol drinker, rarely consuming vegetables, frequently consuming grilled foods and instant seasonings, high Body Mass Index, and history of Diabetes Mellitus. Sociodemographic status as well as certain health status were found to be significant risk factors for hypertension in adults in Kalimantan. Only a few aspects of lifestyle and eating habits were identified as having a significant relationship with the incidence of hypertension.

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is associated with reduced quality of life, increased healthcare spending, and premature death. This analysis aims to obtain an overview of the relationship between food consumption habits and the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Indonesia. This study analyzes aggregate data at the provincial level related to chronic kidney failure with selected variables. All provinces were taken as samples. In addition to the prevalence of chronic kidney disease, 4 other variables analyzed as independent variables were the proportion of habitual consumption of fatty/cholesterol/fried foods ≥ 1 time per day, the proportion of habitual consumption of meat/chicken/fish processed with preservatives ≥ 1 time per day, the proportion the habit of consuming soft drinks or carbonated drinks ≥ 1 time per day, the proportion of habitual consumption of energy drinks ≥ 1 time per day. Data were analyzed using scatter plots. The province with the highest prevalence of chronic kidney failure is North Kalimantan Province. The results of the bivariate analysis with scatter plots showed that the habit of consuming fatty/cholesterol/fried foods ≥ 1 time per day, consumption of processed meat/chicken/fish with preservatives ≥ 1 time per day, and consumption of soft drinks or carbonated drinks ≥ 1 time has a positive relation for the prevalence of chronic kidney failure, while the consumption of energy drinks is negatively related to the prevalence of chronic kidney failure in Indonesia. The high prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Indonesia illustrates that public awareness still needs to be increased regarding food consumption habits in the family environment.
