Abstract

Calcium is believed to play a role in growth, especially in children under five, and contributes to malnutrition issues in Indonesia. However, national-scale data are very limited to delve deeper into this matter. The study aims to examine the calcium status of children in Indonesia and their nutritional status, including stunting and underweight. A cross-sectional study design using secondary data from the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) and Study of Nutrition Status of Children Under Five and School-Aged Children 2021, including serum calcium concentration data and anthropometric measurements of body length and body weight. The study subjects were children aged 0-59 months, totaling 550 samples. The study results show the mean value of calcium concentration was 10.00±1.10 mg/dL. As many as 8.2 percent of children experienced deficiency with calcium concentration <9.0 mg/dL. The proportion of stunted and underweight children was 23.27 percent and 9.82 percent, respectively. The average calcium concentration in stunted and underweight children was not significantly different from the normal scores of HAZ and BAZ in children. Calcium status, along with factors such as age and sex, did not show a relationship with nutritional status indicators like height-for-age (HAZ) and weight-for-age (WAZ). Although the prevalence of calcium deficiency among toddlers in Indonesia is relatively low, there are still children with calcium concentrations significantly below the normal range. Further studies are needed to figure out the contribution of calcium to children's growth.

Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic disease that can occur if the body is unable to use the insulin it produces effectively. People with diabetes have special dietary arrangements that are different from non-diabetic people. One of them is by consuming foods with a low glycemic index. Cassava peel has good potential for development. Artificial rice from cassava peel waste, besides having good nutritional content, is also very minimally used, especially in the city of Padang. This research aims to develop analog rice from cassava peel waste, which has the potential to have a low glycemic index and be an alternative food for people with diabetes. The method of this research is that this research uses an experimental test method using a randomized design comparing cassava peel flour and sago starch flour with the ratio F1(60:40), F2(70:30), and F3(80:20). Organoleptic tests were carried out on 30 semi-trained panelists. Data analysis used software with the Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney tests at a 5% level. The Glycemic Index test was carried out by taking blood using a finger prick test or glucometer at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. Results: From organoleptic and proximate testing, the best formulation was obtained, namely F3(80:20). The nutritional content of this formulation is 3.51% ash content; fat content 6.3%; protein content 1.64%; carbohydrates 81.16%; amylose 16.47%; crude fiber 6.07%; dietary fiber 29.14%. The glycemic index result was 20.63. Artificial rice from cassava skin has a low glycemic index, so it has the potential as a food for diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Children's nutritional status is very important because it includes balanced physical growth and mental development, while poor nutritional status can hinder the growth and development process of toddlers. This study investigates the effect of participation in the Joint Education Group on the Nutritional Status of Toddlers Aged 6-23 months in Pagerbatu Village, Majasari District, Pandeglang. The study was conducted in 2023 involving 60 pairs of respondents (mothers and toddlers aged 6-23 months) who were malnourished (weight faltering). There is an effect of participation in educational groups on the nutritional status of toddlers, with a p-value = 0.000. However, the mean TB/U decreased by -1.0006±2.02603, and the Wilcoxon test results showed a p-value of 0.135 (p > 0.05), indicating that there was no effect of participation in the education group on nutritional status based on Height by Age. The results of the path analysis and Sobel test showed that all hypothesis tests carried out were not significantly significant (H2 was rejected). It is recommended that mothers implement the knowledge gained from the education group to enhance the growth and development of their toddlers.

Abstract

Female students in Islamic boarding school are one of the vulnerable groups to experience nutritional problems caused by several factors, one of which is because there are traditions that can change eating patterns. Changes in eating patterns can be caused by fasting traditions, such as Daud and Ngrowot. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the differences in nutritional status and body composition among female students based on type of fasting habits. This research is an observational analytical study with a cross sectional design at API Asri Syubbanul Wathon Islamic Boarding School Tegalrejo, Magelang in female students aged 16-18 years who were selected using stratified random sampling techniques. Subjects were divided into the Daud (n=34), Ngrowot (n=30), Daud and Ngrowot (33), and without Daud Ngrowot (n=31) groups. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Kruskall-Wallis test. Most subjects had been fasting for 3 years and the majority of subjects who practiced Daud and Daud Ngrowot fasting rarely did sahur. However, the eating habits of the four groups did not different significantly. The majority of subjects eating twice a day and rarely exercising. Most of the subjects in the four groups had normal nutritional status, muscle mass, and body water percentage, but most subjects had above normal body fat percentage. There was no difference in nutritional status based on BMI/A (p=0.707), MUAC (p=0.594), WC (p=0.372), and WHR (p=0.201) and body composition such as body fat percentage (p=0.393), muscle mass (p=0.403), and total body water percentage (p=0.346) in the four groups. Nutritional status based on BMI/A, MUAC, WC, WHR, body fat percentage, muscle mass, and total body water percentage did not differ significantly between Daud, Ngrowot, Daud with Ngrowot, and without Daud Ngrowot groups.

Abstract

Determining the nutritional status of children under five depends heavily on accurate measurement results and the measuring instruments used. This study aims to develop a digital length and height measuring instrument for children under five who are able to measure automatically with an accuracy of 0.1 cm and store results up to 100 children's data. This tool uses a VL53L0X sensor and displays nutritional status directly based on WHO 2006 standards (TB/U). A total of 43 children under five were measured using digital and manual tools. The test results showed that the Technical Error of Measurement (TEM) and reliability values on the digital tool were in the “almost perfect” category (≥0.8), similar to the manual tool. Paired-Samples T-Test results showed no significant difference between the two tools (p>0.05). The digital measurement tool also showed high sensitivity and specificity in detecting nutritional status. Therefore, this tool can be used as a practical alternative in anthropometric measurements in remote areas.

Abstract

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the adverse health impacts of excessive sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption, which may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to analyse the association between SSB consumption and the risk of diabetes mellitus among adolescents. A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 54 high school students from Taruna Andigha Senior High School in Bogor City, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires and anthropometric measurements. The results showed that 42.6% of participants were at high risk for diabetes mellitus, and 44.4% had high SSB consumption habits. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between SSB consumption (p=0.018), body mass index for age (BMI/A) (p=0.045), and waist circumference (p=0.023) with the risk of diabetes mellitus. Adolescents with high SSB intake were 4.583 times more likely to be at high risk compared to those with lower consumption. These findings underscore the need for health education and regulation of sugary beverage consumption among adolescents to reduce their risk of diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a commonly used indicator to assess nutritional status, which can be influenced by nutrient intake from food consumption. This study aims to analyze the relationship between energy and macronutrient intake and BMI. A cross-sectional design was applied using data from the 2019 Non-Communicable Disease Risk Factor Cohort Study (FRPTM), involving 1,018 subjects selected purposively from a total of 1,218 respondents. The data analyzed included sociodemographic characteristics, BMI, and 1x24-hour dietary recall. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney test for variables showing significant differences. The results indicated significant associations between BMI and gender, energy intake (low vs. high), fat intake (adequate vs. high), and carbohydrate intake (low vs. adequate and low vs. high). These differences may be influenced by variations in metabolism and intake levels. In conclusion, BMI is affected not only by energy and macronutrient intake but also by other contributing factors.
