Abstract

This study aims to examine audience reception of the "Kejutan Belanja Untung" promotional campaign posted by the @tokopedia Instagram account during the 2022 period. The analysis draws on Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding reception theory and considers four key consumer psychological factors: motivation, perception, learning, and attitude. Employing a constructivist paradigm, the study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a reception analysis method. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation, and data were collected through in-depth interviews with seven informants who follow the @tokopedia Instagram account. The findings indicate that all seven informants exhibited a dominant-hegemonic reading in terms of motivation and attitude. However, their perception and learning responses varied, with some aligning with the dominant-hegemonic position and others reflecting an oppositional reading.

Abstract

This study examines the effects of social media messages on political campaign outcomes in the context of national elections and local elections (pilkada). Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, this research identifies patterns, trends, and findings from previous studies. The results indicate that social media messages influence voters on three dimensions: cognitive (enhancing knowledge), affective (emotional engagement), and behavioural (encouraging actions). Social media provides significant opportunities to strengthen candidate images, raise political awareness, and increase voter participation. However, misinformation and fake news pose substantial challenges, undermining campaign integrity and public trust. These findings highlight the dual role of social media in political communication: as an effective tool for voter engagement and as a medium susceptible to spreading false information. This study recommends ethical and data-driven communication strategies to maximize the positive impacts of social media in political campaigns.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the voting decisions of students belonging to the Silent Majority and analyze the differences in media preferences and choices between the Silent Majority and Vocal Minority. The theoretical framework used in this study is the Spiral of Silence theory. The research employs an associative quantitative method with non-probability and purposive sampling techniques, selecting 111 respondents from Pertamina University students (class of 2020-2024). Hypothesis testing results show significant differences between the Silent Majority and Vocal Minority regarding their presidential candidate preferences and social media usage. The findings highlight that social media sentiment does not always reflect real-world election outcomes

Abstract

This study aims to understand Gen Z's digital non-verbal communication preferences through a literature study approach. The theoretical framework used includes symbolic communication theory, media richness theory, and the concept of digital native. The method used is a systematic literature study of scientific journals and books published in the last five years. The findings show that Gen Z is more comfortable expressing themselves through digital non-verbal communication due to digital socio-cultural factors, the need for speed of communication, and psychological comfort in conveying messages indirectly. The results of the study also revealed that although the use of digital symbols increases expressivity, it also has the potential to reduce the depth of emotion in interpersonal communication and trigger challenges in cross-generational and professional communication. In conclusion, digital non-verbal communication has become an integral part of Gen Z's interaction patterns, which requires adaptation from various parties, including educational institutions and the world of work. This study contributes to the development of digital communication theory and offers practical implications for more inclusive communication in the digital era.

Abstract

This study captures the phenomenon of cancel culture that afflicts Indonesian celebrities due to their behavior that is considered to violate social norms and ethics; as well as revealing the social implications faced by celebrities after they become victims of cancel culture. Using a constructivist paradigm with qualitative characteristics, this study draws research data sources from social media content and literature reviews. The results show that cancel culture is a digital culture that emphasizes the social responsibility of individuals, groups, institutions, or corporations for their actions; reflecting new dynamics in social interaction, where the collective power of netizens can impose social sanctions on celebrities. Cancel culture is not only about cancellation culture, but also a reflection of the complex relationship between public power, freedom of expression, and social ethics. By understanding cancel culture, we can prevent its negative impacts, as well as promote more effective, literate, aware, and responsible use of social media. Keywords: Cancel culture, expressions of resistance, netizen collective power, negative impact, social norms
