Abstract

This study discusses moderate Islam in West Java based on the perspectives of five mainstream Islam mass organizations: Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, Persatuan Umat Islam, Persatuan Islam, and Jami’atul Washliyah, concerning intolerance cases in the province in recent years. These five Islam mass organizations have roles in West Java and their perspectives are also necessarily needed to consider especially in the middle of radical-liberal, secular-fundamental streams. The study employs the Quintan Wiktorowicz socio-religious research methodology through documentation, observation, and interview techniques. The results show that the cases of intolerance in West Java have not yet resolved. There are internal, cross- and inter-religious factors both to promote and to inhibit this issue. Therefore, maintaining and giving space to the moderate Islam mass organization is suggested, as a frame in forming the behavior and religious pattern in the community.

Abstract

The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) phenomenon has increasingly shaped the consumption patterns of Generation Z, driven by the pressure to stay connected and keep up with social trends. This study explores the moral implications of FOMO through the lens of Islamic consumer ethics, which emphasizes principles such as moderation, self-discipline, and ethical responsibility in consumption. The purpose of this research is to investigate how Islamic ethical values can address the FOMO-driven behaviors prevalent in Generation Z, aiming to foster a more balanced and responsible approach to consumption. Using a library research method, the study analyzes various scholarly sources and Islamic teachings, particularly the Quran and Hadith, focusing on key ethical concepts such as Israf, Qana’ah, and Ihtiyat. The findings indicate that the FOMO mindset often leads Generation Z to engage in impulsive consumption and material excess, which contradicts the Islamic principles of moderation and mindfulness in spending. Islamic consumer ethics, with its emphasis on contentment and self-restraint, provides a moral framework that can counter these tendencies by encouraging thoughtful and ethical consumption. The research recommends the implementation of educational programs and awareness campaigns to promote Islamic ethical values, particularly among Generation Z, to mitigate the psychological and financial pressures of FOMO. These efforts can help guide this generation towards a more sustainable, mindful, and ethically conscious lifestyle that aligns with Islamic teachings on consumption.

Abstract

This research is a literature-based study with a descriptive approach aimed at explaining the evidence in cases of Sharia economic disputes. Data was collected through documentation methods, primarily by reviewing relevant articles and books. Data analysis used the content analysis method to identify the main messages in the literature. The results of this study are as follows: (1) In civil law, the evidentiary process requires parties to present valid evidence such as documents, witnesses, confessions, oaths, and judicial presumptions, as stipulated in Article 164 HIR/284 RBG. The main principle is that judges decide based on the “preponderance of evidence” or strong enough evidence. Documentary evidence is divided into authentic deeds (created by official authorities) and private deeds (without official authorities). Understanding the types of evidence and how to use them is crucial for achieving justice in court. And (2) In Islamic jurisprudence, the plaintiff must prove their allegations, and oaths are mandatory for those who deny. Testimonies are required by the court's order, and the minimum requirement for proof is two pieces of evidence, including witnesses, which is quantitative in nature. Testimonies and other evidence are essential in ensuring the truthfulness of the Islamic legal process.

Abstract

The verse of al-Qitâl is frequently exploited as a symbol to instill a negative stigma against Islam and trigger the emergence of religious radicalism, which disrupts Muslim-non-Muslim relations. This study aims to look into al-Shâthibî and Ibn `Ashûr's perspectives of Maqâshid al-Syarî`ah and its relation to the verse of al-Qitâl. Studies revealed that al-Shâthibî and Ibn `Ashûr had the same passion for Islamic law reform. Differences arise in the methodological and conceptual domain employed to identify and map Maqâshid al-Syarî`ah. Al-Shâthibî uses it to refer to the Maqâshid al-Syarî`ah trilogy, which includes the purpose of Islamic law discourse, Islamic law philosophy, and Islamic law principle. On the other hand, al-Shâthibî only provides examples of application related to the goals of Islamic law discourse. Meanwhile, Ibn `Ashûr limits its application to the purpose of Islamic law philosophy related to morals and ethics. Furthermore, al-Shâthibî  identify the dimensions of Hifz al-Dîn (protection of religion) in the verse of al-Qitâl using the istiqrâ’ (induction), which is an Islamic law discourse methodology, while Ibn `Ashûr identify them based on the philosophy of Islamic law. This study concludes that al-Shâthibî and Ibn `Ashûr’s perspectives of the verse of al-Qitâl contain Maqâshid al-Syarî`ah content.

Abstract

The issue of distribution in an Islamic economy is not about the allocation of resources/output per se. It is about a ‘just’ allocation of resources/output. This article attempts to elaborate Islamic concept of distribution by exploring the goals of distribution in Islamic economics and mechanisms to achieve distributive justice goals. The focus of discussion is about how to realize ‘distributive justice’ in an Islamic moral economic framework by considering all dimensions: right and responsibility, effort and surplus of individual and public interest. In that spirit, the policy for distributive justice in an Islamic moral economy aims to achieve certain objectives, namely (1) fulfilment of basic needs, (2) establishing socio-economic justice and (3) economic empowerment. To achieve those objectives, Islam uses both moral exhortation to encourage voluntary action and rules/legal measures to ensure distribution/allocation of wealth in society. The distribution scheme in an Islamic economy would attempt to eliminate poverty and deprivation so that the basic needs of all are duly fulfilled. In practice, Islamic economics distribution system is done through (1) the establishment of initial conditions in distribution as the basis upon which operational distribution should be taken place during production and after production; (2) distribution through factor payment; and (3) distribution through transfer payment in the form of compulsory transfers, voluntary transfers and transfer through state.
