Abstract

Household waste, including residues from daily activities, can negatively impact the environment if not properly managed. This study focuses on household waste management in RT 03 RW 01 Desa Ngadilangkung, Kecamatan Kepanjen, Kabupaten Malang, with the aim of raising awareness and knowledge among the community about the benefits of rice washing water. The methods used include primary surveys through observations and interviews with village officials, the head of RW, the head of RT, and the community. The survey results indicate that most households have not optimally utilized rice washing water, with only 6% of households engaging in processing and 94% not recycling. Socialization efforts were conducted to educate the community on the production of liquid organic fertilizer (POC) from rice washing water, which is expected to improve waste management and more effectively utilize household waste. The outreach results indicate a significant potential for the application of POC in the village, although there remains a need for further education on waste management.

Abstract

The demand for clean water continues to increase along with population growth, while its availability becomes increasingly limited. Clean water is essential for health, household activities, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. The criteria for potable water include a neutral pH, absence of excessive chemical substances, and no E. coli contamination. In coastal areas such as Sampang Regency, Madura, groundwater quality is generally low due to high salinity, alkalinity, and lime content, making it unsuitable for consumption. To address this issue, a clean water supply system based on Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology was developed to reduce odor, turbidity, and organic compounds. This program aims to produce potable water while improving public health, soil fertility, and community productivity. In addition to benefiting local communities and regional governments, this activity also serves as a medium for community service and research for the academic community of Universitas Brawijaya and supports the “1000 Villages” Community Service Program (KKN) in East Java.

Abstract

SOTH is a program initiated by the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) that is organized to improve parents' knowledge, attitudes, and skills in parenting. This is to optimize children's growth, development, and positive character, as well as being one of the efforts to reduce stunting, supporting the zero stunting program. Through proper parenting, both physically and psychologically, it is expected to reduce the risk of stunting. One of the physical aspects related to parenting is the child's environment, both outdoor and indoor spaces. A Healthy & Child- Friendly Environment aims to create an environment or space that supports the growth and development of the little ones by providing various positive stimulations. When children can carry out activities safely and comfortably, it will provide energy and freedom for children to be active. For the success of this program, multi-sector collaboration is needed that cares about and can support the sustainability of activities. The Faculty of Engineering, University of Brawijaya, through its Community Service program, in collaboration with Mojolangu Village, actively participates in helping to implement SOTH activities. Through increasing community awareness and understanding about parenting, both physically and psychologically, it will help prevent and overcome stunting so that healthy and quality children are expected to be formed.

Abstract

Effective and environmentally sound learning is the main goal of the school because it is able to integrate theory with real practice in the surrounding environment. One example is the utilization of organic waste, such as dry leaves and twigs, to be processed into compost for the school garden. This approach not only supports practical science lessons, but also fosters environmental awareness early on in elementary school students. So far, science learning is often only theoretical in the classroom. To make it easier for students to understand and make learning fun, tools such as a leaf shredder are needed. This machine helps solve the problem of using manual tools such as small scissors that are less efficient. The shredder can turn organic waste into small pieces that are ready to be processed into compost, supporting creative and innovative activities in learning. The solution offered is training in the design and manufacture of leaf shredding machines as well as the introduction of a machine model that is easy to use and maintain. This machine is donated to the school to support the Adiwiyata School program, which is an environmentally friendly school. The chopping machine serves as a learning tool for students and school managers, encouraging creative, productive, and environmentally friendly characters. The results obtained include a model of the chopping machine along with a guide to its use. With this machine, the learning atmosphere becomes more interactive, increases student understanding, and supports the formation of environmentally friendly characters. The level of user satisfaction with this chopping machine is very high, making it a real contribution in creating an environmentally friendly and innovative school environment.

Abstract

Efforts to improve the quality of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) products and enhance production facilities were carried out for the Vigur Asri Women Farmers Group (KWT) in Malang City. The main issue faced by the group was consumer complaints regarding rancid VCO products occurring before the expiration date. This problem was presumed to result from high moisture content and air contamination due to inadequate ventilation and hygiene in the production area. To address these issues, a community assistance program was implemented through training on moisture content testing based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 3781:2008) and the reorganization of the production room to improve air circulation. The testing process employed a simple, cost-effective method using an oven and an analytical balance, which was easy for participants to understand and apply. Activity evaluation focused on participants’ ability to follow testing procedures and comprehend product quality standards. The results showed that the VCO’s moisture content was successfully reduced to 0.2%, meeting the maximum limit required by SNI. Furthermore, the improvement of production facilities enhanced product quality and competitiveness. This program positively impacted the group’s capacity to produce high-quality VCO sustainably.
