Abstract

Sports is seen as a means to develop young people’s social competence and promote a healthy lifestyle and personal development skills, especially values such as leadership, respect, and responsibility. In order to contribute to the development of youth in South Africa, a community-based sports programme, Shongi Soccer Programme (SSP), was implemented by the Philipp Lahm-Stiftung (PLF) in Soul City Township, Johannesburg, South Africa. The evaluation aimed to determine the perceived development outcomes derived from participation in the sports programme and identify strengths and challenges in implementing the sports programme. A survey was conducted with twelve sports programme participants selected through purposive sampling. This was followed by focus group discussions with the same participants, parents, coaches and programme coordinators. The results revealed that the sports programme provided overall positive experiences for youth development, learning and interaction. The participants attributed personal and social development experiences to supportive and positive relationships with the coaches and peers. Furthermore, the results indicate that 67% of participants strongly believed the sports programme was a positive turning point in their lives. These results illustrate that the SSP sports programme has positively impacted the participants' development.

Abstract

Digital technology advancement has led to increased gadget usage among elementary school students but their extended screen time and high screen exposure risks transforming their daily activities from active play to sedentary behavior. The research investigates how students' physical activities change when they spend more time using gadgets during their daily routines. The research employed explanatory case study qualitative methods to gather data through structured interviews and direct observations of six students who spent most of their time using gadgets. The research demonstrates that students use gadgets mainly for watching content which creates three main obstacles to their physical activity: decreased motivation and physical abilities and reduced involvement in unstructured physical activities. Students maintain their participation in Physical Education (PE) activities but they now choose to spend their free time watching screens instead of being active. The research demonstrates that the length of time students spend with gadgets determines which activities they perform throughout their day. The research findings help parents and educators and policymakers create effective digital monitoring systems and enhance physical activity opportunities to support children's healthy development in today's digital world.

Abstract

Flat foot (pes planus) is a deformity characterized by collapse of the medial longitudinal arch, which may lead to postural disturbances and functional limitations. Despite its clinical relevance, flat foot often receives little attention until musculoskeletal symptoms become pronounced. Epidemiological data on its prevalence and anthropometric determinants among university students, particularly in Southeast Asia, remain limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of flat foot and its association with gender, age, body weight, height, and body mass index (BMI) among university students as a basis for early prevention strategies. A quantitative descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted involving 107 university students (21 males and 86 females). Foot arch structure was assessed using the footprint test, and data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Flat foot prevalence was higher in females (67.29%) than males (14.95%) and was most common in respondents aged 21–23 years (64.49%). Higher prevalence was observed among students with body weight ≥60 kg (33.64%), height ≥166 cm (18.69%), and elevated BMI. Anthropometric factors, particularly gender, body weight, height, and BMI, are significantly associated with flat foot prevalence among university students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the paired training method using a rubber ball on the underhand passing skills in volleyball in 5th grade students of Tanjungharjo Elementary School. The method used is a quasi-experimental design with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design, where students are given training in underhand passing using a rubber ball and their abilities are measured before and after treatment through a 60-second performance test. This study used a sample of 15 fifth grade students. The results showed a significant increase in underhand passing skills, with an average value increasing from 20.27 to 32.87. Based on the normality test, the data were normally distributed (p>0.05) so that data analysis was carried out using the parametric statistical analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample T-Test, which produced a significance value (p-value) of 0.000 (<0.05) so that the null hypothesis was rejected and a significant effect was proven. The rubber ball media provides a sense of security and comfort for students, thereby increasing their courage to practice, while the paired training method strengthens the formation of motor memory through systematic repetition of movements. In conclusion, the use of rubber balls with the pair training method significantly improves students' underhand passing skills and is recommended as an effective learning approach in elementary schools.

Abstract

Shoulder dislocation is one of the joint injuries with a high recurrence rate and has a significant impact on upper extremity function. Limitations in range of motion, decreased muscle strength, and shoulder instability are the main problems following reduction. One rehabilitation approach that has continued to develop is functional movement–based strengthening therapy through Modified Shoulder Flexion and Extension exercises. This study aimed to analyze the effect of this method on pain reduction, improvement in shoulder range of motion, and shoulder muscle strength in patients after shoulder dislocation. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest approach involving 18 respondents with anterior shoulder dislocation who met the inclusion criteria and completed the entire intervention program. The intervention was administered for six weeks with a frequency of three sessions per week. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test to compare pre- and post-intervention values for pain (VAS), range of motion, and muscle strength.  The results demonstrated a significant reduction in pain, with a mean decrease of 3.8 points on the VAS, along with substantial improvements in shoulder range of motion, particularly in flexion and abduction, which increased by more than 70°. Progressive strengthening of the rotator cuff and deltoid muscles was also observed, with all participants achieving at least a one-grade improvement in Manual Muscle Testing scores.. These findings support the effectiveness of Modified Shoulder Flexion and Extension as an integral component of post–shoulder dislocation physiotherapy rehabilitation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PE) policy at the Junior High School level in Nias Regency, North Sumatra, using Stephen J. Ball's educational policy analysis theory, which encompasses three main contexts: the context of influence, the context of formulation, and the context of implementation. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, through data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observations, and documentation involving elements of the Nias Regency Education Office, school principals, PE teachers, and relevant policy documents. The results show that policy formulation is still influenced by limited coordination and data support. Implementation is running quite well but is hampered by sports facilities, teacher competence, and health facilities in schools. Supporting factors include school commitment, student enthusiasm, and support for the national curriculum; while inhibiting factors include minimal budget, lack of infrastructure, and slow bureaucracy. This study recommends increasing funding, teacher training, and strengthening coordination between stakeholders to optimize PE policy in Nias Regency. In conclusion, the physical education policy in Nias Regency has been implemented but has not been optimal, so it is necessary to increase funding, strengthen teacher competency, and coordinate between stakeholders to optimize its implementation.

Abstract

The increasing trend of documenting physical activity on social media has transformed exercise into a form of digital content, yet its influence on youth exercise interest remains underexplored. This study aims to examine the effect of digital content creation motivation on exercise interest among young people. A quantitative approach was employed using a survey of 250 respondents aged 15–30 years, selected through purposive sampling. All participants were active social media users who had experience producing or engaging with exercise-related content. The research instrument consisted of 33 items adapted from motivation and exercise behavior theories, with 24 items retained after validity and reliability testing. Data were analyzed using SPSS through descriptive statistics, classical assumption tests, and simple linear regression. The results indicate that digital content creation motivation has a positive and significant effect on exercise interest (β = 0.566, p < 0.001), accounting for 32% of the variance (R² = 0.320). This finding suggests that young people tend to show greater interest in exercising when their physical activities can be documented and shared as digital content. The magnitude of the explained variance indicates that digital content creation motivation is a meaningful predictor of exercise interest. These findings conclude that digital content creation functions as a psychological and social stimulus that enhances youth engagement in physical activity. The study contributes theoretically to digital behavior research and offers practical implications for developing social media–based health campaigns to promote active lifestyles among young people.
