Abstract

This study aims to uncover the character education values reflected in the main character in Tere Liye's novel Yang Sudah Lama Pergi (The Long Gone). The focus of the study is to analyze how these character values are expressed through dialogue, actions, and the character development of the main character throughout the story. The approach used is descriptive qualitative with content analysis method, where the researcher acts as a key instrument supported by analysis guidelines and data coding sheets. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth reading of the novel three times, accompanied by note-taking and listening to the text to identify various aspects of the main character that are relevant to the character education values. The results show a comprehensive representation of 13 character education values in the main character. Religious values are reflected through the character's deep reflection on life and divinity, while honesty and discipline appear in the consistency of the character's thought patterns and actions. The analysis reveals that hard work and creativity are important pillars that drive conflict resolution in the story. Furthermore, the main character's curiosity drives narrative development, while national spirit is reflected in how the character interacts with diverse social environments. The findings indicate that a positive reception of others' achievements is a key character in building social relationships. The main character's ability to communicate, maintain peace, and demonstrate empathy represents the values of friendship and social care. The character's literacy patterns depicted through reading habits also enrich the learning aspects of the story. Responsibility as a central value is seen in various complex moral decision-making processes. This research has theoretical implications for literary studies by presenting a comprehensive analytical framework for character education, as well as practical implications for the world of education.

Abstract

Numbers are a fundamental concept in mathematics that serve as the cornerstone for understanding more advanced mathematical ideas. Their role is essential across all levels of education, from early childhood to higher education. This article explores various conceptual approaches and practical strategies for teaching numbers effectively, aiming to support learners in developing a deep and functional understanding of numerical concepts. In early education, visual aids such as flashcards and open-ended questioning techniques help young children internalize basic number recognition and counting skills. As students progress, tools like number lines and culturally relevant real-world examples can further enhance comprehension by providing context and meaning to abstract concepts. The article also emphasizes the importance of promoting inductive reasoning through dialogue and real-life applications, which not only supports number comprehension but also cultivates students’ critical thinking skills. With the integration of technology, such as hybrid e-learning platforms, educational apps, and digital games, mathematics instruction becomes more engaging and accessible, increasing both student motivation and retention. These technological tools also allow for personalized learning experiences, catering to different learning styles and paces. Furthermore, this paper addresses common misconceptions about numbers and highlights the need for diagnostic assessment to inform instructional design. By understanding where students struggle, educators can tailor interventions that address specific gaps in understanding. The comprehensive methods discussed aim not only to improve number literacy but also to establish a robust and adaptable mathematical foundation. Ultimately, this article advocates for a balanced approach that integrates traditional and innovative techniques to ensure effective number teaching and meaningful learning outcomes in mathematics education.

Abstract

This research focuses on the phenomenon of student political literacy formed through the consumption of digital content, particularly those published by the NarasiNewsroom account on the X platform (formerly Twitter). In this context, political literacy is interpreted through three main dimensions: political awareness, political knowledge, and political participation. The study employs a qualitative approach with a case study method conducted at the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation studies, which were subsequently analyzed using NVivo 15 software for qualitative data analysis. The findings reveal that NarasiNewsroom plays a significant role in shaping students’ political awareness and knowledge through information dissemination strategies that are trend-sensitive, data-driven, and communicative in nature. The content produced is effective in attracting student attention, sparking digital dialogue, and fostering critical thinking related to political issues. Nevertheless, while the content contributes to increased awareness and understanding, its influence on actual political participation remains limited. Many students remain passive, particularly in real-world political engagement outside of social media platforms. This limitation is attributed to external factors such as the academic environment’s lack of encouragement for political expression and the absence of formal political education spaces within the campus setting. Therefore, while NarasiNewsroom has proven to be a strategic digital actor in building the foundation of political literacy among the youth, the study underscores the necessity for collaborative efforts between digital media, educational institutions, and the broader social environment to cultivate a holistic and sustainable political literacy ecosystem for future generations.

Abstract

This article discusses the comparison between restorative and retributive criminal justice systems in resolving criminal cases in Indonesia. The background of this study is the growing urgency to implement a more humanistic criminal justice model that not only focuses on punishment or retaliation, but also emphasizes efforts to restore the losses of victims and achieve reconciliation between perpetrators, victims, and the community. This study aims to analyze the fundamental differences between the two approaches, assess their effectiveness in the Indonesian context, and identify challenges in their implementation. A qualitative approach is applied through literature review and policy analysis by examining legal regulations, law enforcement practices, and implementation experiences across various judicial institutions. The findings reveal that the retributive justice system remains dominant, particularly in cases involving serious and violent crimes. However, the restorative justice model has been increasingly introduced in minor offenses and complaint-based cases, especially through mechanisms such as mediation and community involvement. Restorative justice is found to offer greater potential in reducing recidivism rates, increasing victim satisfaction, and promoting long-term social harmony. Despite its advantages, the implementation of restorative justice in Indonesia still faces multiple challenges, including limited regulatory support, lack of public awareness, and resistance within legal institutions due to entrenched punitive mindsets. This study concludes that a balanced integration of restorative and retributive approaches is necessary, depending on the nature and severity of the crime. Strengthening the legal framework, enhancing institutional capacity, and promoting a cultural shift within law enforcement are crucial steps toward establishing restorative justice as a legitimate, humane, and sustainable alternative in Indonesia’s criminal justice system.

Abstract

Environmental problems in the city of Medan, such as high garbage piles, air and water pollution, and limited green open spaces, have become serious challenges that demand direct involvement from residents and local communities. Environmental management efforts cannot fully rely on the government, but require active collaboration from various parties, including environmental care communities. This study aims to analyze the supporting and inhibiting factors faced by communities in strengthening ecological citizenship, focusing on the study of the New Normal Main Waste Bank and the Environmental Activist Solidarity Community in Medan City. The research approach uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and documentation of community activities. The results of the study show that the main driving factors include the availability of waste management facilities and tools, harmonious social relations, ease of activity methods, and personal motivation of members. In addition, family values, openness of participation, and positive feedback from the community strengthen the collective spirit of the community in driving ecological action. On the other hand, the community faces various obstacles, such as limited time and manpower, low public awareness of environmental issues, ecological knowledge gap, and lack of regulatory and funding support. These factors often slow down collective efforts to achieve sustainability targets. The findings of the study confirm that the success of community action depends not only on the availability of resources, but also on social resilience, consistency of shared values, and adaptability to structural challenges. Therefore, this study recommends the importance of strengthening institutional support, building the capacity of human resources, and sustainable education campaigns to encourage active and sustainable citizen participation in protecting the environment.

Abstract

The surge in unemployment in Indonesia is a serious challenge that demands strategic and sustainable solutions. One approach that is gaining increasing attention is the development of entrepreneurship, particularly through skills training that can be directly applied in the workplace. This study focuses on analyzing the extent to which culinary training organized by the Temanggung Regency Vocational Training Center (BLK) can influence the entrepreneurial interest of its participants. This study uses a quantitative approach with an associative research design that aims to examine the causal relationship between culinary training variables and entrepreneurial interest. The research sample consisted of 32 respondents selected from culinary training participants at the Temanggung BLK. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using simple linear regression analysis techniques. The results show that culinary training has a positive and significant influence on increasing entrepreneurial interest. This is evidenced by a significance value of 0.005, which is below the threshold of 0.05, so the relationship between the two variables can be said to be statistically significant. In addition, the correlation coefficient (R) of 0.481 indicates a positive relationship with moderate strength. This means that the better the implementation of culinary arts training, the higher the participants' interest in becoming entrepreneurs in the culinary field. Quantitatively, the contribution of culinary arts training to increasing entrepreneurial interest reached 48.1%, as indicated by the coefficient of determination (R²). Meanwhile, the remaining 51.9% was influenced by factors other than training, such as family background, personal motivation, access to business capital, social environment, and support from government policies and financial institutions. These findings indicate that practical skills training such as culinary arts not only provides technical knowledge but also can shape an entrepreneurial mindset among participants.

Abstract

The Al-Mashun Grand Mosque in Medan serves not only as a place of worship for Muslims but also represents a religious symbol and cultural identity for urban communities in Medan. This study aims to examine the role of the mosque in the socio-cultural context, and how its existence reflects the religious values and ethnic Malay identity that are strongly embedded in its architecture and socio-religious practices. Using a qualitative approach and data collection techniques through interviews, field observations, and literature studies, this study found that the Al-Mashun Grand Mosque possesses a strong spiritual and cultural appeal. The mosque's architecture, which combines Middle Eastern, Indian, and European elements, serves as a symbol of Islamic splendor in the midst of a modern city. Its magnificent design and rich ornamental details reflect a valuable cultural heritage and attract visitors from various backgrounds. Furthermore, the mosque serves as a center for religious activities and a religious tourism destination, strengthening Islam's position in urban public spaces. Various social activities, such as religious study groups, Islamic holiday celebrations, and community empowerment programs, are held at the mosque, making it an important hub for social interaction. These findings indicate that the mosque is not only a place of worship but also a symbolic space that strengthens the identity and existence of local culture within the dynamics of urban society. The existence of the Al-Mashun Grand Mosque contributes to the formation of a harmonious and respectful community and serves as an example of how a place of worship can serve as a bridge between tradition and modernity in an urban context. Thus, the mosque serves not only as a spiritual sanctuary but also as a center for strengthening social and cultural values important to the people of Medan.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the semantic functions of the regional particles mi, ji, and pi in social media communication within South Sulawesi. These particles frequently appear in posts, comments, and informal conversations across digital platforms such as Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok. The research employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected through documentation techniques by compiling user posts and comments that actively utilized these particles. The analysis was conducted interpretively to identify the meanings, semantic roles, and pragmatic aspects associated with the usage of each particle. The findings reveal that mi, ji, and pi serve various semantic functions, including assertion, emotional marking, and meaning reinforcement. These particles do not merely function grammatically; they also carry social and cultural significance, reflecting the speaker’s identity, particularly among communities in South Sulawesi. The use of these particles is strongly influenced by the user’s social context, interpersonal relationships, and the informal, community-based nature of digital communication. In the realm of social media, these elements enhance personal expression and foster a sense of belonging among users who share similar cultural backgrounds. This study highlights the importance of understanding regional language dynamics within the context of modern digital communication. Therefore, further research is recommended, particularly in the areas of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and cross-platform language use, to deepen insights into how local languages adapt to and function in contemporary discourse. Moreover, integrating knowledge about these particles into language education and the development of digital learning materials is encouraged. Such efforts could contribute to preserving local languages while simultaneously improving linguistic literacy among the public—especially the younger generation—in today’s digital era. This not only promotes cultural recognition but also reinforces the value of indigenous linguistic identity in the evolving landscape of online communication.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the Meaningful Learning model on improving students’ learning outcomes in understanding explanatory texts in grade XI of SMAS Muhammadiyah Lempangang. The Meaningful Learning model is a learning approach that emphasizes the connection between new information and the prior knowledge possessed by students, thereby fostering deeper, more relevant, and meaningful learning experiences. This approach is expected to enhance student engagement in the learning process and build logical connections between the concepts being learned. The background of this research stems from the low academic achievement of students in the Indonesian language subject, particularly in understanding explanatory texts. Explanatory texts require logical, systematic, and analytical thinking skills. However, many students score below the Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC). One of the factors contributing to this low performance is the continued use of conventional teaching methods, such as lectures, which tend to be one-directional and do not actively involve students in the learning process. This research uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method involving two groups: an experimental group using the Meaningful Learning model and a control group using conventional methods. Data were collected through pretests and posttests and analyzed using a t-test to determine the significance of the difference in learning outcomes between the two groups. The results show a significant improvement in the learning outcomes of students in the experimental group after the application of the Meaningful Learning model. Students became more active, motivated, and capable of better understanding the structure and content of explanatory texts compared to those in the control group. In conclusion, the implementation of the Meaningful Learning model has a positive and significant effect on improving students’ understanding and learning outcomes. This model is recommended as an innovative alternative approach in Indonesian language instruction at the secondary education level to enhance both the quality of the learning process and its outcomes.
