Abstract

Background : Cervical cancer is primarily caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which is also a common cause of sexually transmitted diseases. HPV infection is present in 99.7% of cervical cancer cases. Globally, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women, while in Indonesia, it ranks as the highest. Teritip, an area in the eastern suburbs of Balikpapan city, is at high risk due to the mobility associated with the entry and exit of immigrant populations, which may increase HPV cases. Therefore, the author conducted this study. Objective : This study aimed to determine the frequency of Human Papillomavirus infection and to assess the relationship between age and HPV infection in adults and adolescents who underwent HPV DNA PCR testing and clinical evaluations at the Teritip Health Center, East Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, from December 2023 to June 2024. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to observe and collect data. A total of 180 patients underwent HPV PCR testing and clinical examination by a midwife. Results : Out of 180 participants, 6 were found to be infected with HPV. There was no statistically significant relationship between age and HPV infection Conclusion/Lesson Learned : There is no relationship between age and HPV infection. Therefore, regular HPV screening is necessary to ensure early detection and management

Abstract

Background : Adolescents are in a complex developmental phase, but limited reproductive knowledge can hinder their understanding of maintaining reproductive health. Questionnaire data indicate that although 79.2% of adolescents understand the risk of pregnancy after a single sexual encounter, only 15.7% are aware of condoms as a contraceptive method. The primary source of information is parents, but typically only covers topics like menstruation, wet dreams, and dating. Furthermore, 34% of adolescents express the need for further counseling, indicating a demand for more comprehensive information. Objective : This program aims to enhance adolescents' knowledge of reproductive health through counseling, covering topics such as puberty, reproductive organ care, understanding adolescent sexuality, risky sexual behavior, and reproductive health issues. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This community service program employed a counseling method through lectures using PowerPoint presentations. The material included adolescent reproductive health education related to early and delayed puberty, reproductive organ care, understanding adolescent sexuality, risky sexual behaviors, and reproductive health issues in adolescents. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted to measure changes in participants' knowledge. The counseling session was attended by 25 students from SMP Negeri 20 Penajam Paser Utara, Wonosari Village, Sepaku, Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan. Results : The analysis showed an 88% increase in students' knowledge after the counseling program (p<0.001), indicating that the counseling successfully enhanced students' understanding of reproductive health. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : This program successfully contributed to adolescent health promotion by providing a better understanding of reproductive health. It is expected that government agencies and schools can strengthen reproductive health education for adolescents through counseling and curriculum integration and collaborate with health centers to provide continuous education.

Abstract

Background : On 6 May 2024, the Bantul District Health Office and Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) identified a cluster of Chikungunya-like illnesses in the Imogiri I Public Health Center area. Objective : Prompting an investigation to confirm the outbreak and identify risk factors. Research Methods : We conducted a 1:1 unmatched case-control study design. Cases were individuals with fever and arthralgia, with or without positive chikungunya lab results, living in Garjoyo and Karangtalun, Imogiri Sub-district. Controls were healthy residents in the same neighbourhood. Data on demographics and risk factors. Were collected through standardized questionnaires. Blood samples from 5 to 10 individuals per hamlet were tested using a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT). Logistic regression analyzes significant factors. Results : We identified 86 suspected cases, resulting in an attack rate (AR) of 8.53% from a total population of 1008. 172 individuals were interviewed, comprising 86 cases and 86 controls. The highest AR was observed among females (60.92%) and in RT 03 KarangTalun (72.1%). Primary symptoms included fever and arthralgia (91.86%). The larval-free index in both villages was below 95%, with the lowest index in KarangTalun RT 03 (15.4%). Out 23 RDT samples, 12 confirmed Chikungunya (52.17%). Multivariate analysis indicated that lower income (OR=1.97, 95% CI:0.85- 3.09) and the presence of mosquito larvae (OR=1.81, 95% CI:0.41-3.20) significantly increased infection risk. Conclusion : The Chikungunya outbreak in Kapanewon Imogiri from April to May 2024 was linked to environmental and socioeconomic risk factors. These findings highlight the need for targeted public health interventions and proactive vector control.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) presents a major public health challenge, particularly due to its complex treatment and varied patient outcomes. Factors such as age, employment status, gender, Linezolid use, and HIV status are thought to influence survival rates among MDR-TB patients, especially those undergoing short-term treatment regimens. Objective : This study aims to evaluate the relationship between these demographic and clinical variables and the survival duration of MDR-TB patients on short-course therapy. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This study used a retrospective cohort design, analysing medical records of MDR-TB patients who received a short-term treatment regimen. A total 38 patients were selected in this study. This study conducted in 2021-2023 at several hospital that provide integrated management of drug resistant tuberculosis control (MTPTRO) program in central java, Indonesia. Key demographic and clinical data, including age, employment status, gender, Linezolid (Lzd) use, HIV status, and survival duration status, were collected. Survival status defined as less than one month and over than one month to death. A logistic regression analysis was performed to analyse the data using SPSS version 15. Results : Employment status and gender were significant predictors of survival, with employed patients showing a higher likelihood of extended survival (Exp(B) = 38.884, 95% CI: 2.302–656.853, p = 0.011) compared to unemployed patients. Additionally, female patients demonstrated better survival outcomes compared to male patients (Exp(B) = 0.031, 95% CI: 0.002–0.448, p = 0.011). Age showed a borderline association with survival, suggesting that older age may be linked to decreased survival, though this was not statistically significant (Exp(B) = 8.668, 95% CI: 0.983–76.397, p = 0.052). Similarly, HIV status indicated a possible association with shorter survival duration, though it did not reach significance (Exp(B) = 5.860, 95% CI: 0.810–42.384, p = 0.080). The timing of treatment initiation following diagnosis also showed a trend toward influencing survival, with earlier initiation possibly improving outcomes (Exp(B) = 8.641, 95% CI: 0.823–90.677, p = 0.072). In contrast, the use of Linezolid (Lzd) did not have a statistically significant effect on survival duration in this cohort (Exp(B) = 0.365, 95% CI: 0.028–4.750, p = 0.441). Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Employment status and gender significantly impact the survival duration of MDR-TB patients on short-term treatment, with employed and female patients showing better outcomes. Although age, HIV status, and early treatment initiation showed potential associations with survival, these factors were not statistically significant.

Abstract

Active Indonesian teens often lack adequate hydration, especially those from low-income families. This study at SMAN 1 Samarinda examines fluid intake, socioeconomic factors, and nutritional status of students to improve their health through better nutrition and hydration. The general objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between fluid intake variables and socioeconomic status with nutritional status in extracurricular sports and non-sports students at SMAN 1 Samarinda. This research was conducted on October 23, 2024, at SMAN 1 Samarinda, involving 50 extracurricular sports and non-sports students. Using a cross-sectional, quantitative design with a chisquare test, the study aimed to analyze the relationship between fluid intake, socioeconomic status, and students' nutritional status. Data was collected at a specific time through observation and interviews The results showed no BMI difference between sports and non-sports students, indicating similar nutritional status in both groups. However, fluid intake was higher among sports students. Socioeconomic factors (parental education, occupation, income, and allowances) did not affect nutritional status in either group. Statistical tests confirmed no link between fluid intake and nutritional status (p=0.849 > 0.05), consistent with research showing hydration doesn’t directly impact nutrition. Additionally, socioeconomic factors showed no significant impact (p>0.05). This study found there is no relation between fluid intake and students' nutritional status (p=0.849 > 0.05), Socioeconomic factors also showed no significant effect (p>0.05), suggesting nutritional status is more influenced by diet, education, and access to nutritious foods. Future studies could add physical activity questions to better assess nutritional differences between sports and non-sports students.
