Abstract

This paper explores the concept of perpetual peace in Henry van Dyke's flash fiction entitled Ashes of Vengeance. The story revolves around the harsh city of Dun, where a man, known as the avenger, seeks revenge for the death of his family. He escapes prison and offers a secret pathway to take over the city to the chief of the besiegers, Alaric. However, upon seeing the city's current state, he changes his focus to peace. Then, how is perpetual peace related in Henry van Dyke’s Ashes of Vengeance? Through Immanuel Kant's theory of perpetual peace, stable peace occurs when all people, governed by universal rule of law, rather than proprietary rulers. In this story, the proprietary ruler is represented by the people of Dun, while Alaric represents the person who wishes to rule according to universal law. Using qualitative analysis, the paper concludes that individuals can achieve stable peace if people do not commit an act that would make a possibility of peace impossible for the future, and that perpetual peace will gradually be achieved.

Abstract

This research describes the code-mixing found in the website “Female Daily Review”. This research is qualitative descriptive. The analysis shows that code-mixing is a phenomenon where two or more languages are used in one sentence or discourse without changing the grammatical structure of each language. In the beauty and makeup industry, many English-derived terms and phrases are commonly used, both among professionals and consumers. Female Daily Review uses various language types to convey reviews, tips, and discussions about beauty. Formal language is used for objective and informative product reviews, while informal language is used for relaxed and personal reviews. Technical language is used for discussing beauty products, while emotional language expresses excitement, disappointment, or personal experiences. Praise or criticism language is used for positive or negative reviews, while instructional language provides tips or guidance on product use, skincare, or makeup looks. Female Daily users often mix languages or code-mixing in their reviews due to their preference for English terms or the globalization of the industry. This allows users to convey their experiences with beauty products more accurately and precisely. Code mixing in product reviews on Female Daily is a common phenomenon due to factors such as a multilingual audience, global audience, culture, speaking style, influence of social media and globalization, expression of identity, vocabulary limitations, perceived quality or excellence, and connected online community. Users may create unique sentences or phrases by combining Indonesian and English words to make their reviews more interesting or different.

Abstract

Some researchers have classified wasei eigo, a unique phenomenon in the absorption of English words into Japanese, as pseudo-loanwords. These words are notable for their characteristics, which not only change morphologically but also semantically. However, the phonological adaptation that occurs in English words when they are absorbed into wasei eigo is often ignored by some researchers. In fact, understanding this adaptation needs to be deepened first, considering English has a different phonological system from Japanese. This study aims to fill the gap by examining wasei eigo words found in Japanese online communication, especially on social media. The purpose of this study is to explain the phonological processes and rules of wasei eigo. Based on data findings, analyzed using both the theory of English and Japanese phonological systems, Japanese tend to adapt English words by adding, deleting, and substituting phonemes. Several reasons underlie these adaptations, including the absence of phonemes in the target language and differences in syllable systems. As a first step in analyzing the phenomenon of pseudo-loanwords in Japanese, this research will serve as a foundation to further study wasei eigo from various perspectives of linguistics.

Abstract

Deixis in movies is often used to create a sense of immersion for the audience. The intricate layers of deixis help to establish a strong connection between the audience and the characters. There are five main types of deixis: person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Each type serves a specific purpose in guiding the audience’s understanding of the narrative and enhancing their overall viewing experience. This qualitative descriptive research aimed to find five different forms of deixis in Leo. Through note taking techniques and data analysis, it was found that personal deixis occurs more than other types of deixis. It was then followed by the occurrence of temporal/time and social deixis. Social and discourse deixis, which are the least common types of deixis, are also very important in raising the film’s emotional impact and storytelling.

Abstract

Racial discrimination is one of the social phenomena that causes intergenerational trauma. The movie becomes one way to picture this reality, as in The First Grader. Using content analysis to qualitatively describe the phenomena, the researcher found three levels of racism. The findings show that personalized mediate racism happens the most. The next level of racism that occurs is institutionalized racism and internalized racism. The source of the racism is British colonialism in Kenya and tribalism, which have had lasting effects on the social fabric of the country. The movie effectively portrays how these different levels of racism manifest in everyday life. The First Grader serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle against racial discrimination and the importance of addressing its root causes to prevent further intergenerational trauma.

Abstract

This paper is focusing on the representation of Grief in the short story of Anatomy of the Aftermath by Karen Jones. Grief is an emotional experience triggered by the loss of something or someone that a person loves, often involving the process of detachment. Then, grief also helps individuals feel closer to the object of love, honor their memories, or fill the void left behind. Karen Jones' flash fiction explores the story of a woman who feels sadness, regret, and longing for her husband's voice after his death. Through qualitative method, this article explores symbols and motifs of the woman's desire to hear her husband's voice and the love that still exists between them despite their separation. Through Kubler Ross’ theory of grief, this paper suggests that if a person can navigate the process well, they can experience normal and healthy grief. In conclusion, it is noted that grief could have two faces of being constructive and destructive. Both aspects are thickly indicated in Jones’ flash fiction.

Abstract

Academic resilience is an important factor in determining student success. Any disparities that may exist between male and female students in the English education program are important in order to ensure that all students have equal opportunities for academic success. An academic resilience adaptation questionnaire was employed in this quantitative study with third semester English education program students. Despite being a smaller percentage of the third semester English education program population, this study indicated that more male students have a high level of academic resilience. Another finding was that male and female students share a similar percentage of students who had low levels of academic resilience. The results of this study support the findings that show gender has an effect on academic resilience.
