Abstract

This research explores the translation of a website (web page). This research is library research. As the internet expands in non-English-speaking countries, multilingual websites have become essential for businesses and accessibility. Translating websites into English enhances global reach but presents challenges in technical, content, and linguistic aspects. Technical issues include file formats and encoding, while content considerations involve text, images, and symbols. Linguistically, style, meaning, and idioms require careful handling. Website translation methods include manual and machine translation. Manual translation ensures accuracy, requiring expertise, contextual understanding, and cultural sensitivity. Machine translation, using AI, offers speed, cost-effectiveness, and consistency but may lack nuance and context. Browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge provide built-in translation features, while extensions further enhance accessibility. However, machine translation can negatively impact SEO rankings and fail to consider reader-specific vocabulary. Moreover, translation influences website design and user experience (UX), affecting layout, menus, and usability. Translators must balance linguistic accuracy with usability, ensuring readability without compromising design. Ultimately, effective website translation requires careful planning to maintain accessibility, accuracy, and functionality. The implications of this research indicate the need for a more holistic approach to translating websites, taking into account readability, user experience, and cultural fit. Translators must understand the target audience well and adapt content to suit the local context while maintaining global communication goals.

Abstract

This writing investigates about the distorted reality portrayed in the Tim Burton’s movie called The Nightmare Before Christmas. The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown's beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the "real world.” When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmas town, all bright colors and warm spirits, he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. The theory behind the world portrayed in The Night Before Christmas is about distorted reality that is a term used to describe a phenomenon where perceptions of reality are altered or distorted in some way. Using a qualitative method and explorative approach, this essay analyses the distorted reality showed in the Halloween Town. The architecture is angular with distorted shapes and lines reflecting the way Burton felt as an outcast and the way society views the strange and different. Moreover, the characters in the film live in a world of perpetual horror and ‘nightmarishness’, but that is their comfort and normality. In conclusion, The Nightmare Before Christmas indicates that reality distortion may not always be eerie, but may mean to reflect ‘otherness’ and unique perspectives of another world.

Abstract

This article describes the senses of revenge and/or justice in Inglourious Basterds, particularly through the characters of Shoshanna Dreyfus, Aldo Raine and the Basterds, and Hans Landa. Universal Pictures released this 2009 film directed by Quentin Tarantino. The writers of this article employ a qualitative method, which allows the reader to learn more about the object's background. These revenge and/or justice scenes describe how revenge and/or justice intertwine in this film. The characters play great actings by indicating that such retaliation is always meaningful, giving inner satisfaction but also contains such justice to the perpetrator. Taking revenge in this film then means as a tool to realize the best way to eliminate the roots of evil that is in line with realizing justice either. In conclusion, the senses of revenge and/or justice in Inglorious Basterds is interpreted flexibly by underlining the characters’ dialogues alongside the ambience of the Nazis’ deeds in World War II.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the translation orientation of blender part terms, whether it leans toward a domestication strategy, foreignization, or a combination of both. This research is a descriptive qualitative study using a translation text analysis approach. The data were obtained from bilingual (English–Indonesian) user manuals of Philips blenders, model types HR2010 and HR2223, which contain lists and descriptions of blender components. The data collection technique involved documentation by transcribing source language terms (English) and their equivalents in the target language (Indonesian). The terms were then classified based on the translation strategy used. The data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, referring to Venuti’s theories of domestication and foreignization. The results show three translation orientation patterns: domestication (replacement of foreign terms, phrase structure adapted to the target language, simplification of information), foreignization (retaining widely recognized foreign terms), and a combination of both (retaining foreign terms while structuring phrases according to the target language). In conclusion, the translation of blender terminology is adaptive, prioritizing readability for local users without compromising the accuracy of technical terms, and the combined approach proves effective in the context of technical translation for household appliance instructions.

Abstract

The Great Debaters serves as a powerful cinematic text that offers a multifaceted exploration of racial injustice and intellectual resistance through the strategic deployment of racist utterances—whether in the form of slurs, threats, institutionalized policies, or internalized oppression. The movie lays bare the linguistic mechanisms that reinforce racial hierarchies and social marginalization. The 26 utterances function as discursive acts that reflect and reproduce unequal power relations, as revealed through a critical discourse analysis grounded in Fairclough’s model. Through the utterances, the viewers gain insight into the normalization of racism through everyday language and institutional discourse. One example of this was the juxtaposition of brutal historical references (such as the Willie Lynch narrative) with moments of rhetorical resistance (e.g., the assertion of Black identity and intellectual agency in debate scenes) that illuminates the ongoing struggle over meaning, representation, and voice. The movie acts as both a historical recounting and a pedagogical tool, inviting critical engagement with how language constructs racial identities and sustains systemic injustice. As a medium of reasoned argument, persuasion, and public voice, the utterances of the Wiley College debate team demonstrated a form of social activism and identity reclamation. This framing enables educators and students alike to connect historical struggles for civil rights with contemporary discourses surrounding race, equity, and education.

Abstract

Metaphors in the movies often serve to deepen the narrative or highlight themes. The research aims to find out the types and meanings of metaphors used in Elemental Movie. The research applied the descriptive qualitative method and follows the interactive analysis model by Miles and Huberman, which included data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion. Based on data analysis conducted on Elemental Movie, it contains 30 expressions from forty types of metaphor according to Ullmann’s theory; those types of metaphor consist of concrete to abstract metaphors (40%), followed by anthropomorphic metaphors (33%), synesthetic metaphors (20%), and animal metaphors (7%). Based on the findings, the writer concludes that the type of metaphor that moves from abstract to concrete is the most frequently used in Elemental. It becomes the most frequently used metaphor since it has a crucial role across various media by making complex ideas more accessible through tangible experiences. The study suggests that English students and those interested in semantics should analyze metaphors in movies to deepen their understanding of metaphorical language.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effectiveness of using meme pictures as a teaching medium to enhance the mastery of adjectives among fifth-grade students at SDN Ringinpitu 2 during the 2024/2025 academic year. The study was motivated by classroom observations that revealed low student engagement and underachievement in English, particularly in understanding adjectives. Given the popularity of meme culture among children through social media, the study explored whether memes could serve as engaging and effective instructional media. A quantitative approach was used with a one-group pre-test and post-test experimental design involving 17 students. Data were collected using observation sheets, questionnaires, and adjective-based tests, then analyzed using SPSS version 27. The paired sample t-test results indicated a statistically significant improvement in students’ post-test scores compared to their pre-test results (p-value = 0.011 < 0.05). This finding confirms that the use of meme pictures has a positive and meaningful effect on students’ adjective mastery. The research concludes that integrating meme-based visual content into English instruction can be an effective and innovative strategy to improve student learning outcomes, particularly in vocabulary development.
