Abstract

Backround: This research examines the complex negotiation of identity among Muslim millennials and Generation Z in urban settings through the lens of reception analysis theory. Objective: The primary research objective is to analyze how Muslim millennials and Generation Z in urban areas negotiate identity through reception and interpretation of popular culture content.Method: This study employs a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews (n=30) and quantitative surveys (n=500) across three major urban centers. Using Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding model, the research analyzes how Muslim youth interpret and negotiate meanings from popular culture content including social media, streaming platforms, music, and fashion.Findings and Implications: Findings reveal three distinct reception patterns: dominant-hegemonic (23%), negotiated (58%), and oppositional (19%). The negotiated position dominates, indicating that most respondents selectively accept cultural messages while filtering them through Islamic values. Thematic analysis identifies five key identity negotiation strategies: selective engagement, religious reframing, hybrid identity formation, community validation, and digital activism. The research demonstrates that urban Muslim youth actively construct multifaceted identities that integrate religious authenticity with global citizenship. Social media emerges as a critical space where 71% seek spiritual guidance while simultaneously consuming mainstream content. Conclusion: The study contributes to cultural studies and Islamic youth research by documenting how reception processes enable identity fluidity without compromising core religious values. Practical implications suggest that religious institutions should acknowledge youth agency in meaning-making processes and create inclusive spaces that validate hybrid identities.

Abstract

Background: The rapid development of digital technology has significantly transformed Islamic preaching (da’wah), requiring contemporary preachers (da’i) to reinterpret prophetic methodologies within algorithm-driven social media environments. Although prophetic principles wisdom (hikmah), beautiful preaching (mau’izhah hasanah), reasoned argumentation (mujadalah bi-llati hiya ahsan), and gradual progression (tadrij) remain timeless, their implementation in digital contexts demands contextual adaptation without compromising theological authenticity. Objective: This study aims to examine how digital da’i understand, interpret, and implement prophetic preaching methods across various social media platforms while navigating technological and algorithmic pressures.Method: This research employs a qualitative phenomenological approach involving 23 digital da’i selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, analysis of 287 digital artifacts across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp, non-participatory observation, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using a six-phase thematic analysis framework.Findings and Implications: The findings reveal three interpretive frameworks: classical adaptation (35%), contextualized translation (48%), and innovative integration (17%). Implementation strategies operate across five domains: content conceptualization, communication style, visual design, structural organization, and audience engagement. The study also identifies tensions between algorithmic demands for engagement and prophetic commitments to spiritual depth and ethical communication. Conclusion: The study highlights the need to integrate digital communication competencies into Islamic da’wah education while preserving prophetic foundations. Prophetic da’wah remains relevant in the digital era when applied with contextual wisdom, ethical integrity, and strategic adaptation.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed religious communication patterns, particularly Islamic da’wah among Indonesia’s millennial generation. Millennials, characterized by high digital literacy and preference for interactive, visual, and on-demand content, increasingly rely on social media platforms as primary sources of spiritual information. However, many da’wah initiatives still replicate conventional one-way preaching models without adapting to the dynamics of digital ecosystems. This study aims to identify effective strategies for utilizing digital technology to enhance the reach and impact of da’wah among millennials. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with digital da’wah practitioners and millennial audiences, participant observation of online religious content, and documentation analysis. The findings reveal that authenticity, relatability, visual storytelling, and engagement-based communication significantly influence audience retention and participation. Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok emerged as the most effective platforms when content was tailored to platform-specific formats such as short-form videos, live streaming, and interactive features. The study concludes that successful digital da’wah requires a paradigm shift toward conversational, contextual, and multi-platform strategies while maintaining theological credibility. These findings contribute to the development of digital religion scholarship and provide practical guidance for Islamic communicators navigating the contemporary digital landscape.

Abstract

The contemporary post-truth era has fundamentally challenged traditional notions of truth, honesty, and ethical communication, with misinformation proliferating across digital platforms at an unprecedented rate. In this context, the Qur'anic concept of 'qaulan sadidan' (truthful speech) offers a timeless ethical framework that transcends cultural and temporal boundaries. This study revisits the concept of qaulan sadidan as articulated in Surah al-Nisa' (4:9) and Surah al-Ahzab (33:70) to develop a comprehensive framework for ethical communication applicable to contemporary challenges. Employing a qualitative methodology with thematic tafsir analysis and content analysis of classical and modern Islamic scholarly works, this research examines how qaulan sadidan encompasses not merely factual accuracy but also constructive intent, contextual appropriateness, and beneficial outcomes. The study reveals that qaulan sadidan operates on three fundamental dimensions: epistemological (truth-telling), ethical (moral responsibility), and pragmatic (effective communication). Furthermore, this research demonstrates how the principles derived from qaulan sadidan can address critical challenges in the post-truth era, including digital misinformation, polarized discourse, and the erosion of public trust. The findings indicate that implementing qaulan sadidan principles requires both individual commitment to truthfulness and systemic reforms in media literacy, digital platform governance, and educational curricula. This study contributes to Islamic communication ethics scholarship while offering practical solutions for navigating the complex information ecosystem of the twenty-first century.

Abstract

Backround: This research examines the semiotic construction of meaning in digital Islamic da'wah content through analysis of Ustadzah Halimah Alaydrus's YouTube channel using Roland Barthes' three-level framework of denotation, connotation, and myth. Objective: As female Islamic preachers increasingly utilize digital platforms to disseminate religious teachings, understanding how meaning is semiotically constructed becomes critical for comprehending contemporary religious communication.Method: This qualitative study employs semiotic content analysis on eight selected videos representing diverse themes and high audience engagement.Findings and Implications: At the denotative level, findings reveal consistent formal presentation through text-based visuals, voice-only audio, and structured discourse creating distinctive brand identity. Connotative analysis demonstrates how these elements activate cultural codes related to Islamic piety, feminine virtue, and religious authenticity, negotiating tensions between tradition and modernity through sophisticated symbolic communication. Mythological analysis uncovers how content naturalizes the "Pious Femininity Synthesis"—presenting conservative Islamic gender norms and contemporary women's aspirations as perfectly compatible—while constructing "maternal wisdom authority" through epistemological, genealogical, experiential, pedagogical, and moral positioning mechanisms. Conclusion: Findings contribute theoretically by demonstrating Barthesian semiotics' effectiveness for religious discourse analysis, practically by revealing semiotic strategies for digital da'wah effectiveness, and critically by exposing ideological dimensions wherein female religious voice expansion coexists with naturalization of conservative gender hierarchies. The study provides comprehensive understanding of how digital Islamic content shapes contemporary religious identity and consciousness through layered meaning construction, offering insights valuable for preachers, religious institutions, media literacy educators, and scholars of digital religion.
