Abstract

Teachers should demonstrate greater creativity in creating and enhancing instructional materials. But because SMK Negeri 2 Botomuzoi lacks the infrastructure and equipment expressly meant to promote Indonesian language instruction, teachers there continue to employ a restricted and repetitious amount of media. In order to ensure that the learning materials are reliable, useful, and efficient, this project will create comic-based learning materials for assessing the language and content of theater in the eleventh grade at SMK Negeri 2 Botomuzoi. This study uses the ADDIE model, which comprises the phases of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, as part of its research and development (R&D) methodology. Three specialists in material, language, and design evaluated the comic-based learning materials, which were then put to the test through product testing with TKJ students in the 11th grade at SMK Negeri 2 Botomuzoi. Thanks to validation scores of 97.5% from material experts, 100% from language experts, and 95% from design experts, the results show that the comic learning medium is both viable and legitimate. The learning media was rated as being very practical when it came to practicality; it received scores of 86.7% in solo testing, 94.2% in small group tests, and 93.9% in field tests. With a classical completion percentage of 96.3%, it was also proved that the learning media's effectiveness was very high. In conclusion, the ADDIE model was used to generate comic-based learning materials that analyze the language and content of drama in the 11th grade at SMK Negeri 2 Botomuzoi. These materials satisfy the required standards and may be used in the classroom.

Abstract

This investigation investigates the impact of a two-way conversation strategy on the speaking performance of tenth-grade students at SMA Wirakarya Mandiri Medan. A genuine experimental design was implemented, with 160 students being divided into two groups: an experimental group that implemented the two-way conversation strategy and a control group that implemented conventional teaching methods. The students' speaking performance was assessed in areas such as fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary through pre- and post-tests. The experimental group exhibited substantial improvement in the results, with scores increasing from a pre-test range of 60–79 to a post-test range of 75–89. Conversely, the control group demonstrated negligible improvement, with post-test scores ranging from 61 to 77. The study's results indicate that the two-way conversation strategy substantially improves students' speaking performance in comparison to conventional methods. The results of this study indicate that the two-way conversation strategy can be a successful method for enhancing English-speaking performance in classroom environments, providing educators with a better understanding of more interactive and engaging teaching methods.

Abstract

TThis study explores the moral values presented in David Ayer’s film "Bright: Home," a significant work that addresses complex social themes through a blend of fantasy and reality. The film serves as an effective medium for analyzing various moral lessons embedded within its narrative. The research methodology comprises three main stages: identifying the data source, data collection, and data analysis. The primary data source includes specific scenes, dialogues, and character interactions in "Bright: Home." Data were collected through detailed observation and subsequently analyzed using descriptive methods based on relevant theories, particularly Ashok Gulla's theory of moral values as outlined in his book "Creating Values in Life." The analysis reveals eight distinct moral values depicted in the film: racism, courage, honesty, loyalty, compassion, kindness, selfishness, and friendship. These values are integral to the film's narrative and thematic structure. The study concludes that these moral values not only enrich the storytelling but also offer important reflections on human behavior and societal issues. Understanding these values can provide viewers with deeper insights into ethical considerations and potentially influence their perspectives and actions.

Abstract

This research examines politeness and impoliteness strategies in the Sundanese language as used on the Ridwan Remin YouTube podcast. Analyzing these strategies provides insights into cultural and social norms, enhances understanding of interpersonal communication within the Sundanese community, and demonstrates how traditional linguistic practices evolve in modern media contexts. As podcast media gains popularity, studying these strategies in this digital format reveals how traditional practices adapt to reflect broader social and cultural changes. This qualitative study utilizes politeness theory by Brown & Levinson (1987) and impoliteness theory by Culpeper (1996), alongside pragmatics, to explore how speakers manage social relationships through language in a podcast setting. The research focuses on the podcast episode "Soleh Solihun: Working with Sincerity (in Sundanese)," uploaded on Ridwan Remin's YouTube channel on May 31, 2021. By analyzing the podcast transcript, the study identifies various politeness and impoliteness strategies used by speakers and evaluates listener responses. This research not only contributes to understanding linguistic strategies in digital communication but also offers implications for future studies on communication practices in evolving digital platforms.

Abstract

This research investigates the semiotic dimensions of horror movie posters and how they use signs and pictures to communicate their genre-specific messages. The poster was selected for a popular horror movie in Indonesia. The verbal and visual signs on these posters were analyzed using semiotic theory as explained by Chandler (2007), studying the meaning of verbal and visual signs in terms of connotative and denotative meaning by Barthes (1968) and Cerrato's (2012) theory for interpreting the meaning of colors. Observation and note-taking techniques were used to collect data for this study. The data of this research was analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. This research shows that selected posters effectively use dark, sinister imagery and bold, jagged typography to convey their horror themes. For instance, the use of a giant skull formed by twelve wrapped corpses in the “Siksa Kubur” poster creates a ghoulish and creepy image that resonates with cultural fears of death and the supernatural. The posters expressed both connotative and denotative meanings. Combining these elements creates a persuasive and engaging narrative that resonates with the cultural and supernatural themes prevalent in Indonesian horror. The posters, beyond being elements of the story, also act as marketing tools, effectively capturing and holding the audience's attention by using meaningful cultural symbols and emotions. These discoveries have important implications for filmmakers and marketers, indicating that a thorough grasp of cultural semiotics can improve horror films' narrative impact and market appeal.

Abstract

Learning Arabic vocabulary in early childhood is essential for developing basic language skills. However, more attention must be paid to applying digital media, such as YouTube, to language learning with a behaviorist approach, specifically Thorndike's theory. This study aims to analyze Arabic vocabulary teaching in early childhood using YouTube based on Thorndike's behaviorism theory at Asy-Syukuriyah TPA. The research method is descriptive qualitative, with a purposive sampling technique involving teachers as informants. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results showed that using YouTube as a medium for learning Arabic vocabulary is to the principles of the law of readiness, practice, and consequences in Thorndike's behaviorism theory. The law of readiness can be seen from the teacher ensuring the children's readiness before starting learning. Furthermore, the law of practice is seen by repeating material through videos to strengthen memory and questions about the material provided. Finally, the law of consequences is seen in the praise given by the teacher when children successfully answer the questions presented. In conclusion, if used strategically and systematically, YouTube as a learning media can be an effective tool in teaching Arabic in early childhood and can strengthen the association between stimulus and response through repetition. The findings have implications that YouTube-based learning based on Thorndike's theory of behaviorism has the potential to be applied more widely, with further research on different age groups and subjects as well as in-depth analysis of student characteristics.

Abstract

is study examines textual discourse in the animated movie “Raya and the Last Dragon,” with a focus on grammatical and lexical cohesion to understand how language supports narrative coherence and emotional impact. Although there is substantial research on textual cohesion and discourse patterns in various contexts, there is a notable gap in investigating how animated films, which merge visual and verbal elements, use these linguistic techniques to construct complex narratives. This research addresses this gap by applying Halliday and Hasan's (1976) theoretical framework to analyze how cohesive devices function within the film’s dialogues. Through the descriptive-qualitative method, the research explores cohesive devices to enhance our comprehension of this linguistic phenomenon. Data collection involved meticulously observing the movie and analyzing the data through both formal and informal methods. The analysis revealed 416 instances of grammatical elements, with references being the most frequently used. These references ensure clarity and continuity in dialogues by linking back to previously mentioned characters or objects, thereby keeping the conversation smooth and coherent. In the lexical analysis, 78 instances were identified, with repetition being the most common. Repetition emphasized key themes, strengthened emotional connections, and effectively conveyed the movie's main messages. This study provides new insights into how animated films uniquely employ cohesive devices to enhance storytelling and character development, and contributing to the broader field of textual discourse analysis.
