Abstract

English has four basic language skills those are listening, writing, reading and speaking. Teaching English at Junior high school is based on the school based curriculum. In competence based curriculum, students should be able to produce written texts based on certain genres, and one of them is descriptive text. Based on the observation, the ability of students in seventh grade of SMP Pemecutan Denpasar, in making descriptive text is lower than the other genres. Students feel bored in writing class and get stuck in describing something. Because of these difficulties, some efforts have been done to solve the problems. One of them is by teaching writing especially for descriptive text by using pictures and combined it with peer assessment. This study is intended to improve the ability of seventh grade students of SMP Pemecutan Denpasar in writing descriptive text. This study was designed in the form of classroom action research to 17 students that consists of two cycles and involving four steps in each cycle namely planning, action, observation and reflection. In order to collect the data, three instruments were used those are test, observation and questioner. The data were analyzed qualitative and quantitative based on rubric proposed by Brown (1994) and Nurgiyantoro (2010). The data analyses were presented in the table and chart as well as also in descriptive narrative sentences. The result of this study showed that the implementing of pictures and peer assessment could improve the ability of students in writing descriptive text. It can be seen from the mean score of students was 58 in pretest and after conducting the treatment in the first cycle the student’s mean score improved to 71 and become 77 in second cycle. There are 5 students (29,41%) who passed the KKM in pre test and there is a significant increasing in first cycle becomes 12 students (70,58%) and all students (100%) passed the KKM in second cycle. It can be inferred that the combination of pictures and peer assessment was very effective helping the students in writing a descriptive text and build their motivation in writing class.

Abstract

In recent years, it is found that pronoun they and its lemmas are used to refer to singular person to show that the person does not wish to be identified as one of gender binaries. This phenomenon occurs in The Washington Post having added singular they to their stylebook. Therefore this paper aims at elaborating how pronouns they, them, their, theirs, and themselves are used as singular ones in the articles of The Washington Post published in 2016. With the aid of corpus instrument software, this study qualitatively analyses a small corpus consisting of 100 articles. References of pronouns identified as singular are proceeded as the data source of this study and categorized into Crystal’s (2003) main classes of noun and Cobuild’s (2011) classification of indefinite pronoun. The study reveals that The Washington Post used they as singular with the references of proper noun which consists of names of people and organizations, common count concrete noun which consists of nouns denoting persons and a noun denoting things, common count abstract noun consisting of nouns denoting abstract entities, and 6 indefinite pronouns which are used to refer to persons. These references are found mostly to be non-referential, where gender is indefinite. However, some are found to be referential which are common count concrete noun child and proper nouns in the form of names of people. These references refer to individuals who identify themselves not in one of gender binaries, instead they are found to be used in a context regarding LGBT.

Abstract

It is believed that traditional grammar is no longer appropriate to teach students especially in developing their writing skill. Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) which focuses on meaning and function behind language is now seen to be well-implemented. The study tried to analyse student’s piece of writing on one type of text in which Hotel Industry students as the sample of the study should master known as recount text. Purposive type of sampling was chosen since there was only one text analysed which was seen as the most problematic one. Content analysis as the implementation of qualitative research was chosen as the design of the study. The findings showed that the major problem student encountered mostly on grammatical structures in which there were found some errors on it. Regarding the three metafunctions, it was known that the students had been able to accomplish all criteria of recount text, such as using mostly material processes which deals with ideational metafunction, using correct tense and subject to fulfil the mood exists in interpersonal metafunction, and using reiteration and zigzag pattern as representation of textual metafunction. However, since there was problem to overcome, a strategy was proposed known as “POWER” which stands for Plan, Organise, Write, Edit, and Revise, which is hoped to help students developed a well-constructed text fulfilling all sine qua non attributes that recount text has.
