Abstract

Waste is solid waste material from human activities at home, schools, shops, public places, markets and so on. One of the markets where there is still a lot of waste in Padang City is the Nanggalo Market in Padang City. Nanggalo Market is one of the traditional markets that sells the daily needs of the community in the market there are still many traders who litter and scatter, for this reason research was conducted at the Nanggalo Market. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence the behaviour of traders in waste management in Nanggalo Market, Padang City in 2023. This research design is quantitative, conducted at Nanggalo Market, Padang City. The research was conducted from December 2022 to June 2023. The population was 408 traders in Nanggalo Market in Padang City with a sample of 80 traders, and the data analysis used was chi-square test statistics. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and traders' behaviour in waste management (p<0.024), there was a significant relationship between attitudes and traders' behaviour in waste management (p<0.024), there was a significant relationship between facilities and traders' behaviour (p<0.004), there was a significant relationship between knowledge and traders' behaviour (p0.004), there is a significant relationship between government policy and traders' behaviour (p<0.000), and there is no significant relationship between the role of cleaning staff and traders' behaviour (p>0.182). It can be concluded that there are several factors that are related and some are not related to the behaviour of traders in waste management at Nanggalo Market, Padang City in 2023.

Abstract

Household waste management is an important environmental and public health issue, especially in areas with high stunting rates, where overall community health can be compromised due to poor sanitation practices. This study explores the implementation of a waste bank system in stunting-prone areas in the working area of the Ambacang community health centre in Padang city. Waste banks function as a community-based approach to managing household waste by encouraging residents to separate and store recyclable materials in exchange for financial benefits. It also aims not only to reduce environmental pollution but also to empower local residents economically and improve public health. This service examines the effectiveness of waste banks in changing household waste management behaviour, their contribution to reducing health risks associated with waste mismanagement and their potential to alleviate stunting through improved environmental sanitation. The waste bank model encourages greater community involvement in waste segregation and recycling thus contributing to a cleaner living environment.

Abstract

Waste management has emerged as a critical environmental issue, particularly in rural areas where population growth and changing consumption patterns have led to increased waste generation. This research focuses on the implementation of community-based waste management in villages, aiming to understand its impact on environmental health and the factors influencing program success. Utilizing a quantitative analytic approach with a cross-sectional research design, the study surveyed 4,345 family heads, with a sample size of 98 participants.The findings revealed that 54.1% of respondents did not engage in waste management activities. Among these non-participants, 70.4% had low educational attainment (elementary or junior high school). Additionally, 53.1% cited a lack of infrastructure as a barrier to participation, while 64.3% reported poor knowledge of waste management practices.The results indicated that infrastructure availability significantly influences community participation, with a p-value of 0.006 and an odds ratio (OR) of 3.911. Furthermore, knowledge levels were crucial; those with inadequate knowledge were less likely to participate (69.2% did not engage), whereas those with good knowledge showed higher participation rates (63%).Effective waste management is essential for improving environmental health by reducing pollution and disease risks. Therefore, enhancing education and infrastructure is vital to encourage community involvement in waste management initiatives. This study underscores the importance of addressing knowledge gaps and infrastructural challenges to foster sustainable waste management practices in rural communities.

Abstract

A World Health Organization (WHO) report highlights that non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, accounted for approximately 71% of all deaths globally by 2020. This research focuses on enhancing the capacity of health administration in managing community nutrition education programs to mitigate disease risk in vulnerable populations. Utilizing quantitative methods, the study employs t-tests to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition education counseling before and after implementation.The sample comprised 27 individuals selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis revealed a notable increase in students' understanding of environmental sanitation, rising from 79.3% in the pretest to 85.93% in the posttest. Additionally, health workers exhibited a 20% improvement in knowledge regarding environmental diseases following program implementation. Compliance with sanitation and hygiene policies increased by 22%, indicating successful enforcement of stricter sanitation measures aimed at reducing environmental disease risks.Moreover, significant improvements were observed in water quality monitoring (25%) and routine training (28%), demonstrating the program's effectiveness in strengthening administrative systems to minimize disease risks. This study underscores that enhancing health administration capacity and community nutrition education through counseling and regular training effectively reduces environment-based disease risks. Ongoing education and consistent monitoring of the program’s long-term impact are essential for sustainability. Ultimately, this program serves as a promising model for future environmental health prevention efforts, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and education in combating NCDs.

Abstract

Community empowerment is one of the main strategies in addressing the challenges faced by rural communities. However, rural empowerment efforts are often faced with various barriers, including low health literacy, dependence on external assistance, and lack of sustainable policy support. This study aims to explore the potential and constraints of community empowerment in environmental health education, occupational safety and health (OSH), and balanced nutrition in rural areas. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with community leaders, health workers, and village government, as well as focus group discussions with local communities. In addition, field observations were made to identify environmental conditions, community behaviours, and practices related to environmental health, OSH, and nutrition consumption patterns. The results of the research will be analysed using a thematic approach to identify patterns and relationships between community participation and the success of empowerment programmes. The findings suggest that community empowerment supported by participatory approaches, local needs-based education, and inter-sectoral synergies can be an effective strategy to address environmental health and OSH issues, and realise the sustainability of community development programmes.

Abstract

Nutrition training programmes for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have great potential to improve the welfare and productivity of the workforce. This study used mixed methods research with quantitative and qualitative approaches. A total of 120 workers in the SME sector in the Anak Air health centre working area were selected as the research sample. Data were collected through a questionnaire designed based on relevant nutrition indicators, such as diet, frequency of consumption of nutritious food, and health status of workers. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistical tests to describe the distribution of baseline data, as well as inferential tests to assess significant differences between pre- and post-training intervention outcomes. Qualitative in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted to gain an indepth understanding of workers' perceptions, challenges faced, and recommendations for programme development. The results showed that the nutrition training had a significant impact on improving the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of workers related to healthy nutrition after attending the training. When food and macronutrient availability is closer to the proportion of healthy consumption patterns, there is a possibility of reducing stunting in the neighbourhood.

Abstract

This study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques, to evaluate household hazardous waste management practices. Data were collected through surveys, in-depth interviews, and direct observations. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to measure community awareness levels and the effectiveness of waste management infrastructure, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data to identify key issues and patterns in community behavior. The findings highlight the effectiveness of community empowerment programs in improving knowledge and practices, with recognition of hazardous waste types increasing to 85%, understanding of associated hazards to 82%, and a reduction in littering behavior from 65% to 20%. These results underscore the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, infrastructure enhancement, and the integration of circular economy principles to achieve sustainable waste management. The study provides actionable, data-driven recommendations for reducing health and environmental risks associated with hazardous waste, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and community engagement.

Abstract

Uncontrolled screen time duration can negatively impact the development of 5-year-old children. This community service activity aims to provide education on screen time management to support their optimal development at TPA Al Amiin, Kediri City. Through socialization, training, and mentoring methods for parents and caregivers, this initiative increases awareness of the adverse effects of excessive screen time and provides practical strategies for managing it wisely. The effectiveness of the training was evaluated using pre-tests and post-tests, revealing a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge, with an average pre-test score of 60% and a post-test score of 88%. The results suggest that structured education on screen time management plays a crucial role in supporting the optimal development of 5-year-old children and can serve as an intervention model applicable in other early childhood education setting.
