Abstract

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide, with significant neurological and biochemical consequences. This study aimed to examine the effect of a neuroprotective nutritional intervention consisting of protein, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, and inulin on glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) levels and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores in acute ischemic stroke patients. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group, involving 18 patients divided equally into intervention and control groups. Data were collected at Dr. Kariadi General Hospital Semarang from January to February 2020, measuring serum GFAP levels using ELISA and assessing NIHSS scores before and after a seven-day intervention. The intervention group showed a significant decrease in GFAP levels and a more pronounced improvement in NIHSS scores compared to the control group. These findings suggest that the neuroprotective nutritional intervention may support both biochemical and clinical recovery in acute ischemic stroke patients. Implementing such nutritional strategies could complement standard care and enhance rehabilitation outcomes. Further research with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up is recommended to confirm these results and optimize the intervention protocol.

Abstract

Globally, tuberculosis (TB) cases are reported at 90%, with 58% occurring in men and 32% in women, and 10% in children (Global Tuberculosis Report 2021). In 2021, the Padang City Health Office recorded 1,199 TB cases, with the largest number in Lubuk Buaya Village, namely 52 cases in 2022. This study aims to determine the relationship between the incidence of pulmonary TB and the physical condition of the house and clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS) in Lubuk Buaya Village. This study is a descriptive analytical study with a quantitative approach, using 27 TB patients as case samples and 27 as controls. The results showed 50 positive TB cases, with humidity meeting the requirements at 46.3%, ventilation 51.9%, lighting 61.1%, and good PHBS only 33.3%. Chi-square test showed a significant relationship between TB incidence and humidity (p = 0.029; OR = 4.038), ventilation (p = 0.014; OR = 4.750), lighting (p = 0.026; OR = 4.375), and PHBS (p = 0.009; OR = 6.129). These findings indicate a relationship between home conditions and healthy living behaviors with TB cases. It is recommended that the Lubuk Buaya Health Center and the Padang City Health Office increase counseling on TB prevention, including education on healthy homes and community-based sanitation. The community is encouraged to build healthy homes to break the chain of TB transmission.

Abstract

This study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques, to evaluate household hazardous waste management practices. Data were collected through surveys, in-depth interviews, and direct observations. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to measure community awareness levels and the effectiveness of waste management infrastructure, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data to identify key issues and patterns in community behavior. The findings highlight the effectiveness of community empowerment programs in improving knowledge and practices, with recognition of hazardous waste types increasing to 85%, understanding of associated hazards to 82%, and a reduction in littering behavior from 65% to 20%. These results underscore the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, infrastructure enhancement, and the integration of circular economy principles to achieve sustainable waste management. The study provides actionable, data-driven recommendations for reducing health and environmental risks associated with hazardous waste, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and community engagement.

Abstract

Community-based ecotourism (CBET) is one of the most popular ecotourism programs in the world. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach that aims to comprehensively describe the process of utilizing natural resources in developing ecotourism through community service programs. Data collection was conducted through several main techniques, namely participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs). Focus group discussions were aimed at key informants who had knowledge and active involvement in ecotourism development, to explore experiences, challenges, and strategies used in program implementation. Thematic analysis techniques were used to identify patterns, main themes, and relationships between variables in the context of ecotourism based on the use of natural resources. The results of the quantitative descriptive analysis show that the level of community participation in the ecotourism activities is in the very high category, with an average score of 4.21 out of 5 and a participation frequency of 87.5%. High community involvement, the formation of institutions such as Pokdarwis, and increased environmental understanding indicate that the Community-Based Ecotourism model can be implemented effectively at the village level.

Abstract

Seniors experience various physical, psychological, and social changes that can impact their quality of life. One factor believed to improve their well-being is spirituality. Seniors with high spiritual levels tend to better face life’s challenges, show stronger psychological resilience, and have a higher quality of life. This study aims to examine the relationship between spiritual condition and quality of life among the elderly in UPTD X. An analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach was used in this study. The sample consisted of 80 elderly individuals selected through Simple Random Sampling from a population of 100. Data were collected using the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) questionnaire to measure spiritual condition and the Older People Quality of Life (OPQOL) questionnaire to assess the elderly’s quality of life. Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rho Correlation Test due to non-normal distribution. Results show that most seniors have a moderate to high spiritual condition. Those more active in spiritual activities tend to have a better quality of life than those with low spirituality. The correlation test revealed a significant relationship between spiritual condition and quality of life (r = 0.512, p = 0.001), indicating a medium-level correlation. The study concludes that better spiritual conditions lead to higher quality of life. To enhance elderly well-being in social institutions, interventions such as improving religious programs, providing better social support, and training health workers in spiritual guidance are essential.
