Abstract

This qualitative case study examines language teachers’ reflective practice mediated by WhatsApp application and addresses the topics mostly reflected in the eight topics of classroom practice and the problems faced. A total of 537 entries of chats written, the most common topic of reflection entries is about general teaching approaches. Time restraint and writing chats in English become significant problems of the reflective practice. The practice has provided an online environment that lets teachers interact and share with colleagues to construct knowledge and evaluate teaching practice that beneficial for teacher professional development. Teachers have gained benefits from online reflection collaboration with other teachers, but most of them take into account the need for an online reflection setting that gives freedom to use the language that they are comforted with

Abstract

This study aims to examine the diverse strategies employed in apology and request, investigate the influence of cultural factors, social power, and social distance on these strategies, and explore the existing limitations and gaps in the literature for future research. Data collection is conducted using the qualitative technique. Qualitative content analysis is employed for data analysis. The SLR process provides a structured framework for analyzing various strategies employed in speech acts and investigates the impact of cultural variables and social distance on these strategies. Through the implementation of a predetermined review procedure, a total of 16 papers published between 2018 and 2022 were identified and analyzed.  The findings demonstrated that many studies examined apologies and requests using different strategies and sub-strategies. Notably, politeness usage by Indonesian English teachers reflected social power dynamics, while linguistic strategies among Thai students and EFL learners were shaped by social distance. Thai study underscored the importance of cultural immersion, variations among interactants, and teaching factors in pragmatic competence. The PRISMA-guided systematic review effectively synthesized existing literature. The gaps, novel insights, and unresolved issues identified provided a roadmap for researchers to propel the field forward. This systematic review contributed a snapshot of current knowledge, charted a course for future investigations, identified gaps, and leveraged the strengths of systematic approaches.

Abstract

For university students, a skill in writing a good summary of articles, books and other sources is very important. Rhetorical Précis, a summarizing template that consists of four dense and direct sentences, can be used to compose a precise summary. This research aims at exploring EFL students’ perceptions of the use of Rhetorical Précis. Using a survey study, a five-degree questionnaire was spread out to 47 students who had attended the Critical Reading course at a reputable university in Surabaya, Indonesia. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively. In addition, a semi-structured interview was held with four of the students. The interview was recorded and transcribed to meet the need of this study. The findings of this study showed that most of the students had positive perceptions of each element of Rhetorical Précis. In short, the students perceived that the Rhetorical Précis summarizing template could be used  by the students to make a summary of the original texts precisely and accurately.

Abstract

Violence, bullying, and crime in schools have become prevalent issues in Indonesia, with the government and educational institutions actively working to prevent these behaviors. Peace values, which can be taught through textbooks, play a crucial role in this effort. Despite the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka, no research has explicitly examined the representation of peace values in the English textbooks published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, Research, and Technology. The study investigates the representation of peace values in the English for Nusantara textbook for Junior High Schools. Using Critical Discourse Analysis by Fairclough, the study found that the textbook represents three types of peace values, textually and visually: inner peace, social peace, and peace with nature. However, these values are still represented disproportionately. In practice, this research can be used for English teachers in selecting, designing, and evaluating learning materials which represent the peace values suitably to students. Apart from that, it could be a reference for book authors to develop materials which are balanced in presenting peace values according to Indonesian students' requirements. In addition, this study can be an alternative for the government in curricula design and evaluation.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out how: (1) amount of input, (2)  amount of vocabulary, (3) learner’s motivation, (4) amount of input, amount of vocabulary, and learner’s motivation affect the English reading literacy; (5) amount of input affects amount of vocabulary, (6) amount of vocabulary affects learner’s motivation, and (7)  amount of input affects learner’s motivation. This study was an ex-post facto. The population comprised year VII students of SMP’s in Bantul District in the second semester of the academic year of 2013/2014. A sample of 384 students was established using the proportional sampling technique. The data were collected through a close-ended questionnaire and test. The close-ended questionnaire was used to collect the data related to students’ learning input and motivation. The test was used to find out the students’ knowledge on vocabulary and reading comprehension. The data were analyzed by employing the linear regression analysis for the linear variables, continued by the multiple regression analysis for the whole variables, and then followed by partial correlation. The findings showed that there is a significant effect of: (1) amount of input; (2) amount of vocabulary; (3) amount of inputs, the learner’s motivation, and amount of vocabulary; (4) amount of inputs and learner’s motivation; (5) learner’s motivation and amount of vocabulary; and (6) amount of inputs and amount of vocabulary on the English reading literacy of SMP students in Bantul District. Meanwhile, there is no significant effect of learner’s motivation on the English reading literacy of SMP students in Bantul District.

Abstract

With the increase in English medium instruction (EMI) in non-English-speaking countries, the role of EAP in preparing learners for the academic tasks that they will face is enhanced. Joint-venture universities (JVUs), institutions formed in collaboration between foreign universities and universities in the host country, pose even greater challenges for EAP programs. Learners in JVUs are expected to meet the requirements of the collaborating institution while simultaneously developing skills in an additional language. Critical to the success of EAP programs in JVUs, then, is the careful analysis of learners’ needs and wants. The present study aims to provide insights into the needs and wants of EAP students at a China-based JVU by focusing on the perceptions of learners who have completed their EAP studies. Data were obtained through a narrative research method based on semi-structured interviews with 16 former EAP students and compared with stated program goals in an effort to discover areas in which students’ perceptions aligned or did not align with program goals. The paper presents cases of alignment and cases of mismatches. An analysis of the mismatches leads to the following pedagogical implications for EMI programs in JVUs: (1) Programs may better cater to learners’ interests by implementing a semi-negotiated curriculum; (2) programs may better cater to learners’ discipline-specific needs by providing broad writing topics for learners to refine in accordance with their particular disciplines; (3) programs may better promote the integration of EAP students and international students by consciously providing the initial “push” toward integration

Abstract

This paper discusses a poetry translation, Love & Misadventure by Lang Leav into Indonesian translated by Aan Mansyur. The purpose of this study is to determine how the translator considers the translation techniques used to translate the poem into the target language and its impact of the translation quality in terms of accuracy and readability. Translation techniques are the means of delivery thought through the use of poetic language such as the repetition and rhyme of the poem. This research is descriptive-qualitative research which applies a purposive sampling technique. The data of this research are 30 poems. Two methods of data collection were applied; content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. The result of analysis provides two results. The first is the analysis show that the translation technique that dominantly used by the translator is Established Equivalence. There are 11 techniques which are applied in translating the selected poem, they are; established equivalent, modulation, amplification, variation, compensation, discursive creation, transposition, particularization, pure borrowing, literal, and reduction. The second is the translation quality of the translation. Most of the data of the poem belong to accurate and readable translation. It shows that there are 20 (67%) data of accurate translation, 10 (33%) data of less accurate translation, and there is no inaccurate translation. The research findings indicates that dealing with accuracy, established equivalence produce most accurate translation and dominantly used to translate the poem. It is due to the fact that Leav’s poem consist of simple style of language and choice of words. Meanwhile, discursive creation produces a less accurate translation. Dealing with readability, there are 27 data (90%) which are classified as readable translation, 2 data (7%) which are classified as less readable, and 1 datum (3%) is classified as unreadable translation from 30 data. All translation techniques used to translate the poem that is found in this research bring positive impact to the level of readability which means they are easy to be understood.

Abstract

Facing the post-Covid-19 pandemic, teachers need to enhance technology in their teaching and learning process, especially in delivering the materials for the students. As digital natives, students are familiar with technology, and it makes them excited in learning English materials. Academic writing materials are complex because it involves expressing ideas carefully elaborated, and well-supported, logically sequenced, rigorously reasoned, and tightly stitched together. Powtoon is one of the solutions to make the materials more interesting and understandable for the students in academic writing class. This study aims to know the students’ perspectives and challenges about the use of Powtoon as digital learning media to improve writing skills. The subjects are 37 students in English Department in one of the state universities in Indonesia. The method is qualitative by using questionnaire, interview, and documentation. It is found that the students have positive perceptions (76.92%) on the use of Powtoon as digital learning media to improve writing skills. Hence, Powtoon is recommended as digital learning media to improve the students’ writing skills. However, the motion of the animation could distract student's concentration in understanding the materials. Apart from that, students still need to ask directly to the teacher if they have not really understood about the materials presented using Powtoon.

Abstract

This study was qualitative content analysis that evaluated the quality of English for University Teaching (EUT), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) textbooks through impressionistic and in-depth analysis.   The participants were 9 EAP teachers and 15 EAP students from three universities in Surakarta, Indonesia. Instruments to collect data were checklist and interview guide. The checklist consisted of impressionistic analysis to see (1) cover, (2) content scope, (3) learning activities, (4) book organization, and (5) layout; and the in-depth analysis, namely (1) aim and approach, (2) organization design, language and content, (3) language skills, and (4) practical consideration. Data were collected using checklist and Focus Group Discussion. Data were analyzed through summative content analysis with seven stages: transforming data into narrative text, determining unit of analysis, developing categories, coding, coding the entire text, checking consistency of coding, and drawing conclusion. Results show EUT and ESP have low quality based on the impressionistic evaluation, and fair quality of their in-depth evaluation.  Both books are register and grammar oriented.  EAP textbook is good in general, and very good in depth.  EAP presents its contents in terms of genre reading, academic speaking, academic reading, academic writing and grammar.

Abstract

The use of social media in human life recently is such normal direct interaction including in English language teaching. Politeness strategies are essential in social communication to keep convenient connections. This study aims to examine how politeness strategies are used in increasingly complex situations, combining social media and the pedagogical context of multiple members’ character, specifically in an EFL class WhatsApp group, and note any effects on students’ language acquisition. This research employs a qualitative methodology with a precisely descriptive case study procedure. The data in this study consists of the last two months’ WhatsApp group chats centered on English learning, specifically examining the usage of politeness methods as well as the results of a focused group discussion (FGD) involving six English as a Foreign Language (EFL) randomly selected students who are members of the WhatsApp group. The result shows that students use positive and negative politeness strategies during the WhatsApp conversation. It enhances their English language learning motivation, critical thinking skills, vocabulary enrichment, writing improvement, and raising awareness of English grammar skills. Therefore, applying politeness strategies in WhatsApp instructional conversations is advantageous in preventing the failure of effective communication during the learning process.
