Abstract

The goal of this study is to examine which word order is dominant in colloquial Buginese-Indonesian, 1) to find out which word-order pattern is more acceptable between SVO and VSO, 2) to find out which word-order pattern is more acceptable between VO and OV, and 3) to find out what internal linguistic characteristics and social factors motivate such acceptability. The data were collected through an online survey via Monkey Survey that employed Acceptability Judgment Task (AJT) to determine which word order is more acceptable in Buginese Indonesian (SVO or VSO and VO or OV). A total of 50 Buginese-Indonesian bilinguals rated the acceptability of 48 target items (and 48 fillers) for patterns such as  SVO/VSO and VO/OV  in a 1-5 Likert Scale (1=completely unnatural; 5=compeletely natural). Target items were controlled for linguistic factors and social factors. ANOVA analysis was used to analyze the data. The results indicate that both SVO and VSO are equally acceptable though VSO was slightly more favorable than SVO. When the subject is omitted, VO was farther favorable than OV. L1, age, and residence had a significant effect on the acceptability of VSO while grammatical person, education level, and residence contributed greatly to the acceptability of VO. The results also reveal that the acceptability of different word orders in Buginese-Indonesian is both linguistically and socially constrained. Thus, the results are situated within a discussion of Backus' (2014) notion of entrenchment and conventionalization.

Abstract

This study aims to know the use of ICT frequency and purposes among EFL university students. It is also examines the students’ perception and expectation towards ICT use in learning English as a foreign language. This research applied quantitative approach with a survey research design. The data were collected from a survey which involved 337 students who were selected using stratified random sampling technique from 13 faculties of a state university in Jambi, Indonesia. The instrument used in collecting the data was a questioner adapted from Tri and Nguyen (2014). Data collected were analyzed by using SPSS 23 in form of descriptive quantitative. The findings indicated that the students spent more time in using ICT for general purposes than English learning purposes. On the other hand, they showed positive attitudes towards the use of ICT in learning English. The students perceive that ICT has the important role in improving their English language skills, and they expected that the teachers use ICT more frequently in teaching and learning process. Furthermore, they expected that campus can provide sufficient equipment and ICT access in each classroom in order to make the learning process become effective.

Abstract

Debating improves students' speaking abilities and fosters spontaneous critical thinking without the need for prior preparation. In the absence of recent research on the topic, the current study aims to explore the benefits and the challenges the English Department students experienced during the implementation of the debate in the learning English-speaking process. The participants of this study were English Department students of Universitas Negeri Malang who had taken the Speaking for Academic Purposes course. A mixed-method study was conducted, by employing an explanatory sequential design to answer the formulated research questions. The quantitative data were collected through an online questionnaire and were analyzed by using Microsoft Excel. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were obtained from the interview and were analyzed by employing the interactive model data analysis of Miles et al. The result showed that most students have positive responses to the use of debate in speaking class and debate could improve their speaking skill. The challenges they encountered during the implementation such as lack numbers of meeting and the duration, limited time for preparing debate, also difficulty in understanding the debate method caused the insignificant result of speaking skill enhancement. The debate system was varied, depending on the lecturers. The result may be used as reference for English teachers to utilize debate in English-speaking class. Likewise, the future researchers are suggested to conduct action research employing debate in English-speaking class.

Abstract

This research discussed education and dialectology, examining the relation of Orang Rimba (OR) isolect in three places at Jambi Province. Different levels of education in each group of OR also influence language maintenance at proto-language. Language shift will occur when OR communicate with the villagers. The number of OR children who go to school does not guarantee a language shift. This study's benefit was to find out the proto vocabulary that still maintenance and shifted, to know the status of isolect from each group of OR to find out their kinship relations, and to know that education levels may not always affect vocabulary shifts. Dialectometry formula used from Guitar, Proto Austronesian (PAN) used theory from Wurm and Wilson, Proto Malayic (PM) used opinion from Adelaar. This study used qualitative and quantitative to answer different formulation of the problems. The result was: firstly, lexically and phonologically, the status of OR isolect in Jambi, including three regencies consisted of two dialects, four subdialects, and four speeches. There were 5 proto vocals and 19 proto consonants phonemes of OR in Jambi Province. The result of affixation identification at PM *tAr-; *mAN-; *(mb)Ar-; *-an; and *kA-an found innovation and no relic. Secondly, the reflex of PAN and PM at OR Malay dialect having the highest value in maintaining its proto-language (relics) occurred in DP 5,6 Muaro Jambi Regency. Thirdly, the number of children attending school in the villages of Nebang Parah and Nyogan was higher compared to other OR groups. The number of children attending school was in line with the high percentage of proto-languages used.

Abstract

The study focused on the effects of the technology-based auditory-kinesthetic strategy on reading comprehension of Primary III pupils in Kaduna-South, Nigeria. The objective of the study was to determine how the effects of technology-based auditory-kinesthetic instruction improve pupils’ reading comprehension for reading speed by fostering critical thinking skills, enhancing text analysis, and enabling personalized reading practices. The study employed a quasi-experimental design of non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control groups. Out of 7,765 pupils, 114 pupils were purposively selected: the experimental group had 56 pupils, and the control group had 58 pupils. Digital Whiteboards (DW), Gesture-Based Learning Platforms (GBLP), and the Real-Time-Reading-Speed Test was used to collect the data. The study used mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and an independent samples t-test to test the hypotheses. The results showed that the strategy had significantly improved Primary III pupils’ reading comprehension for reading speed strategies, critical thinking skills, text analysis engagement, and personalized reading experiences that enhanced reading speed performance. The study recommended further study in comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, professional development and to conduct a study on the technology-based auditory-kinesthetic strategy among rural and urban language learners.

Abstract

In recent times, the language of mediatized genres has attracted much scholarly attention all over the world. However, little is known about the rhetorical structure and linguistic realisation of television talk shows in Ghana. This study, therefore, examined the Introduction sections of Newsfile, a popular television talk show telecast on JoyNews, a Ghanaian television station, to determine its schematic structure and linguistic realisations. Data for the study comprised five Introduction sections of the Newsfile aired after the 2016 general elections. The data were transcribed and analyzed based on the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach to genre analysis.  The findings revealed that the Introduction section of the talk show was characterized by ten moves (Greetings, Naming of Programme, The Seller, Naming the Host, Invitation of Viewers, Introduction of Subject, Signalling Commercial Break, Host’s Address, Introduction of Guests, and Introduction of Sponsors), with the Host’s Address and Introduction of Guests realized by steps. The study also revealed that while some of these moves were obligatory, others were optional. Additionally, it was revealed that there were recursions of some moves. Further analysis revealed the linguistic resources used in each of the moves. This study has implications for scholarship on talk shows especially in sub-Saharan Africa, genre studies, pedagogy, and further research.

Abstract

Descriptive text is one of genres which is demanded be mastered by high school students in Indonesia. This requires teachers to be able to deliver it well in the classroom. However, research discovered that many teachers still have limited knowledge of how to effectively teach genres in the classroom. This qualitative case study was intended to diagnose a student’s descriptive text writing through SFL perspectives to find out what problems encountered in her text writing. It is expected that after finding the problems, the teacher could design a pedagogical plan to deal with them. The results showed that the student’s major problems in writing descriptive text lied on three aspects: the inability in adjusting the social function of the text, difficulty in writing the descriptive text with a chronological schematic structures, and the difficulty in filling the text with appropriate language features such as the use of unspecific participant. Therefore, taking everything into consideration, the researcher proposed Discovery Learning model to be used in teaching descriptive text in the classroom due to its strengths.

Abstract

Anxiety or nervousness is one of the affective factors that affects anyone learning and practicing English as a foreign language, especially when speaking the language. Anxiety in English speaking is commonly related to apprehension, fear, and worry that the learners experience when using the language. Most researchers in Indonesia studied speaking anxiety in terms of psychological and linguistic factors, but not specifically to relate with variables such as gender and number of years for learning the target language. This study is in addition to examining the speaking anxiety level of Indonesian learners of English, and the dominant factor triggering the anxiety, and also to attest the difference of anxiety levels related to gender and the number of years in learning English. By using a quantitative method of case study research design, this study revealed that female learners are more anxious than males in speaking English which mean gender is affected by foreign language anxiety. Besides, the number of years in learning English also influences learners controlling their anxiety during speaking which means the longer they learn English the less anxious they speak the language. Then, test anxiety most dominantly contributes to the uneasiness factor for students in speaking English. The result of this study implies that teachers or lecturers of English must provide a space for female students to feel more secure in speaking class by avoiding negative evaluation so that they feel comfortable while learning and acquiring the language.

Abstract

This study investigated the use of genre-based language teaching model in the teaching of writing skills to improve students’ low achievement. It was aimed at improving the achievement of the fifth semester of English language education study program. This study was classroom action research. The subjects were the 4th semester in academic year 2017/2018. The procedure of the study included two steps namely the preliminary study and the action. The preliminary study collected information dealing with the students’ problems and the action presented the steps of the classroom action research. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, and testing. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The result of the study showed that the genre-based language teaching model can improve the students’ writing achievement. Before the action, the average score of students’ writing achievement was 55 and the average score after the action was 76. The result was higher than the subject minimum passing grade which is 75. The improvement was supported by two indicators. First, students felt easy to write a descriptive text because the teaching steps guided them to practice writing much more according to the generic structures of the text. Last but not least, students felt compatible with the topics asked to be written because they have background knowledge of those.

Abstract

Publication in high-reputation international journals is a necessity for contemporary academics. However, academics face considerable challenges in writing for international publication partly because of failing to meet acceptable rhetorical pattern in accordance with disciplinary convention. This study tries to investigate rhetorical moves in eight Scopus-indexed research articles written by two Indonesian authors from hard science and soft science. The articles were selected based on the authors' status as first authors. To analyze the rhetorical moves, a framework from Maswana, et al. (2015) was adopted and modified. The findings revealed that the authors rhetorically organize their articles mostly in a similar way particularly in the abstract and introduction sections. Similarities were also found in manifesting several steps such as identifying data source and analysis instruments in the methods section, stating and interpreting the results in the findings and discussion section, and highlighting overall results and significance in the conclusion section. However, differences were spotted in the step level particularly in recounting experimental process in the methods section and explaining specific research outcomes in the conclusion section. Those discrepancies might be caused by disciplinary conventions. The results provide a framework and resources for academics striving to write articles for international publications.
