Abstract

This study aims to design and develop an animated learning video integrating Randai, a traditional performing art rooted in Minangkabau local wisdom, as a culturally responsive learning medium to foster creativity among vocational students. In response to the limited use of innovative and culturally contextualized media in environmental ethics learning, this research employs a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. During the Define stage, a needs analysis was conducted to align the video content with environmental impact materials. In the Design stage, a narrative script based on Randai was created, followed by the development of storyboards and video production using Powtoon. Expert validation was carried out in the Develop stage, and product testing involving vocational students occurred in the Disseminate phase. Research instruments included validation sheets, practicality questionnaires, and creativity assessments. Data were analyzed descriptively using percentage calculations. The results show that the developed animation video is considered valid by experts (89%) and highly practical by students (88%). Moreover, it significantly enhances students’ creative thinking skills, particularly in fluency, flexibility, and originality. This study contributes to the field by demonstrating how local cultural heritage can be effectively integrated into digital learning media, supporting the development of 21st-century skills while promoting cultural preservation in vocational education contexts.

Abstract

The practice of sustainability in fashion education is practised by students related to environmental issues through a curriculum approach, independent activities, pedagogy, teaching & and learning strategies and external collaboration in preparation for facing the real world of the fashion industry. However, observations show that material waste and imprudent material management occur during the task development process, contributing to environmental pollution. Thus, this study aims to identify the level of sustainability practices in fashion education among students of Fashion Design at Vocational Colleges. The theories and models used in this study are Norm Activation Theory, environmentally sustainable textile and apparel consumption Model (ESTA- Environmentally sustainable textile and apparel consumption), Model of Predictors of Environmentally Responsible Behaviour (Model of Predictors of Environmental Behaviour: PEB) and Behavioural Change System Model (Behavioural change system: KAP). The design of this study uses a quantitative cross-sectional survey strategy of 330 students using stratified random sampling and purposive random sampling techniques. A Likert scale (5-point) questionnaire instrument adapted and modified from previous studies was used to obtain data. IBM SPSS version 26.0 software was used as a descriptive analysis tool by looking at the mean value and standard deviation. Findings of the sustainability practices in fashion education among fashion design students at vocational colleges show a high level (M=3.88, SD=0.66). Students have a positive attitude towards sustainability, but their willingness to perform sustainability behaviours in related projects or activities does not show the same direction. The implication is that this study can contribute to the Technical and Vocational Training Education Division (BPLTV) as a guide in the transformation towards a formal sustainable curriculum in the Fashion Design program at vocational colleges.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of intelligence on soft skill competence and to analyze models predicting improvements in soft skill competence based on intelligence in maritime vocational colleges under the Ministry of Transportation, which is responsible for producing seafarers in Indonesia. This study employs a quantitative and inferential approach to test the hypothesis. Data were collected from 217 prospective graduates at the Politeknik Pelayaran Surabaya, Indonesia. The sampling technique used is stratified cluster random sampling, selecting samples from three majors: Nautical, Engineering, and Electrical. The instruments used in this research include standardized tests and a questionnaire, both of which have been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares (PLS) with Smart PLS software to examine the structural relationships among variables and produce a predictive model of soft skill competence based on intellectual intelligence (IQ) and Adversity Quotient (AQ). The results of this study indicate a significant and positive direct influence of IQ on soft skill competence by 50% and an indirect influence of IQ on soft skill competence through AQ by 6.8%. The analysis further reveals a positive and significant influence of IQ on AQ by 21.4% and a direct positive influence of AQ on soft skill competence by 31.8%. The structural analysis of the model using PLS demonstrates that IQ and AQ together influence soft skill competence with an overall predictive power of 44.9%. This research contributes to understanding the relationship between intelligence and soft skills development, which can serve as a foundation for formulating maritime vocational education policies. The findings highlight the importance of integrating both cognitive intelligence and resilience-building strategies into maritime education curricula to enhance the preparedness and employability of future seafarers.

Abstract

The creative economy is vital for Indonesia's economic growth, especially during a global slowdown. It boosts employment and export values, with culinary, crafts, and fashion leading the way. In 2022, fashion, culinary, and crafts had the highest export values. West  Java is a standout province in this industry. The UMKM Juara program aims to expand markets and digitalize MSMEs. Technology and digital tools are reshaping the business landscape, and the creative industry must embrace these advancements to succeed financially. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of digital innovation on business success as a mediator between digital entrepreneurship competence and digital entrepreneurship orientation. The methodology employed was descriptive verification with a quantitative approach. Data were collected using questionnaires. The sampling technique employed was non-probability sampling with purposive sampling, yielding a sample of 306 West Java UMKM Juara in the Fashion Subsector. SEM-AMOS was used to analyze the data in this research. The research findings revealed that digital entrepreneurship competence had a direct and positive effect on business success. Likewise, digital entrepreneurship orientation had a positive effect on business success. Digital innovation mediated digital entrepreneurship competence towards business success. However, digital innovation did not mediate digital entrepreneurship orientation on Business Success.  This findings can be used to improve vocational education curricula or strengthen training programs related to developing digital competencies among learners.

Abstract

Research on digital maturity models in education, particularly vocational education, remains limited, despite the urgent need for schools to adapt to digital transformation. Vocational High Schools (SMK) in Indonesia are mandated to prepare graduates as skilled workers ready to meet industry demands, and therefore require a clear framework to assess their digital readiness. This study aims to develop a model and an instrument to measure the digital maturity level of vocational schools. The research employed a literature review of existing digital maturity models from both education and industry, followed by synthesis and adaptation to the vocational school context. The resulting model consists of five dimensions: strategy and organization, people and culture, products and services, technology and infrastructure, and organizational operations. It defines five levels of maturity: not ready, initial readiness, medium readiness, mature readiness, and fully applied. An instrument with 29 indicators was developed and tested through a pilot study in one vocational school, with results showing strong validity and reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.935). The findings highlight the inclusion of the products and services dimension as a novel contribution compared to existing educational models. This model and instrument provide practical benefits for vocational school leaders to assess current digital maturity, identify areas for improvement, and plan targeted digital transformation strategies. The study also opens avenues for future research through larger-scale validation and integration of field observations.

Abstract

Vocational High School Special Job Markets (Bursa Kerja Khusus/ BKK SMK) play a strategic role in enhancing graduates’ competitiveness by linking them with employment opportunities. However, systematic approaches to performance measurement in BKK remain limited, leading to inefficiencies in service delivery and accountability. This study aims to design a comprehensive performance measurement framework for BKK using the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) approach. A qualitative literature review method was employed by examining scholarly articles, official reports, and institutional documents relevant to BKK operations. The analysis highlights that BKK management generally follows four managerial stages: planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling. Through the BSC framework, four performance perspectives were identified—financial, customer (students and industry partners), internal processes, and learning and growth. The results suggest that the implementation of BSC provides BKK with a structured tool to assess program effectiveness, monitor performance indicators, and develop targeted strategies for service improvement. Moreover, the study emphasizes the potential of digitalization to strengthen BKK transparency, accountability, and efficiency in job placement services. The original contribution of this research lies in proposing a BSC-based evaluation model that serves as a practical guideline for policymakers, school managers, and industry partners in aligning vocational education outcomes with labor market needs. In doing so, the study advances both theoretical insights into performance measurement systems and practical implications for improving the employability of vocational graduates.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate integrated control systems media for the traction system of electric railway drives to enhance students’ electrification competencies. Specifically, the study sought to analyze the operation, assess the feasibility, and produce effective instructional media for use in the Railway Electrical Engineering program at Madiun State Polytechnic. A development research design was employed by combining the RAD (Rapid Application Development) and ASSURE models. The subjects were 39 railway students, and data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and tests. Instrument validation was conducted using Aiken’s V and Pearson Product Moment correlation, while reliability was tested with Cronbach’s Alpha. Data were analyzed using Huberman’s steps for qualitative findings and descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon test, and Gain Score analysis for quantitative data. The results indicate that the developed traction system media—consisting of an application and teaching modules—were rated “Very Feasible” by experts and students. Statistical tests showed significant improvements in the electrification competencies of the experimental group compared to the control group. The integrated control systems media not only support effective laboratory practice but also foster interactive and engaging learning experiences. This study contributes to vocational education by demonstrating how technology-based instructional media can strengthen students’ technical competencies in railway electrification and by providing a model that can be replicated in other polytechnic and technical training contexts.

Abstract

Decent work for persons with disabilities is a crucial aspect in enhancing skills, employability, and social inclusion. While developed countries have established comprehensive vocational training systems, limited research has explored how these initiatives are implemented in China at the provincial level. China’s 14th Five-Year Development Plan highlights vocational skill enhancement as a key strategy to protect labor rights for persons with disabilities. This study analyzes policies and strategic measures supporting decent work for persons with disabilities through vocational education in Zhejiang Province within the framework of common prosperity. Employing a qualitative descriptive analysis, the research reviews policy documents and existing vocational education practices. The findings reveal that the Zhejiang government has enacted multiple initiatives, including industry-based vocational training, digitalization of employment, and entrepreneurship support, to facilitate the integration of persons with disabilities into the workforce. Despite progress, challenges remain in enrollment, continuity of education, and resource availability. The study concludes that vocational education for persons with disabilities is not only a mechanism for skill enhancement but also a critical pillar in reducing socio-economic disparities. This research contributes both theoretically and practically by providing insights for policymakers and educators in developing inclusive employment policy models that can be adapted in other regions seeking to advance social equity and economic sustainability.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and validate a measurement tool for assessing prospective technology teachers’ attitudes toward technology subjects in Korea and to examine differences across student groups. A major teacher education university in Korea was selected, and a survey was conducted among 80 undergraduate students from the first to fourth year who were preparing to become technology teachers. The instrument development process involved four stages: item generation, preliminary construction, validity testing, and reliability testing. Data were collected through postal and online questionnaires and analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and reliability tests. Attitudes toward technology subjects were defined as consistent psychological tendencies expressed in beliefs, affective feelings, and behavioral intentions. Results showed that the developed tool demonstrated strong validity and reliability, with three clear dimensions. Overall, students reported a relatively high attitude score (M = 4.15), with beliefs about technology education receiving the highest average score (M = 4.59). Significant differences were found based on gender, with female students showing stronger beliefs about technology subjects, and by grade level, where fourth-year students exhibited higher behavioral intentions compared to first-year students. These findings indicate that while prospective technology teachers in Korea hold strong beliefs and intentions toward technology subjects, their affective feelings remain less positive. This study contributes to vocational and teacher education research by providing a validated instrument for measuring technology education attitudes and by offering insights for curriculum design that fosters positive attitudes in future technology educators.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship education programmes have been expanded globally across multiple levels of education to foster entrepreneurial competencies, including among student teachers at the Technical Education Campus, Teacher Education Institute (IPGKPT). Despite this development, limited studies have examined the entrepreneurial mindset of future teachers, who play a crucial role in shaping the next generation. This study aims to identify the entrepreneurial characteristics and the level of entrepreneurial aspirations among IPGKPT student teachers. A descriptive quantitative survey design was employed, involving 498 student teachers who responded to a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. The results indicated that entrepreneurial characteristics (M = 3.78, SD = 0.85) and entrepreneurial aspirations (M = 3.76, SD = 0.85) were both at a high level. The findings further showed that student teachers demonstrated strong traits in risk-taking, innovativeness, and locus of control, as well as high levels of achievement motivation and self-efficacy. These results suggest that student teachers at IPGKPT are well-prepared to embrace entrepreneurship education and may potentially become role models in fostering entrepreneurial culture in schools. The study highlights the importance of sustaining and strengthening entrepreneurship education programmes in higher education institutions, particularly in teacher training colleges, to equip future educators with entrepreneurial mindsets and competencies. Such initiatives are expected to enhance graduate employability, encourage innovation in teaching, and contribute to broader national efforts toward economic growth and sustainability.
