Abstract

This study investigates the MOOD system in the Awig-Awig text of the Denpasar Customary Village to explain how interpersonal relations between the customary village and its members are constructed, as well as how MOOD choices represent the obligations of community members. The analysis adopts the Systemic Functional Linguistics framework, particularly the interpersonal metafunction, focusing on clause structure, polarity, and modality. The findings show that interpersonal relations are predominantly realized through declarative MOOD. Customary rules are presented as normative information perceived as objective and mutually accepted, rather than as direct commands directed at community members. Through declarative MOOD, the customary village is positioned as a source of cultural authority without overt assertion of power, while community members are positioned as ethical subjects engaged in the implementation of social norms. Obligation is expressed through obligation modality, whereas prohibitions are conveyed through declarative MOOD marked by negative polarity. These findings fill a gap in linguistic studies on Balinese customary legal texts and demonstrate that the language of awig-awig functions not only as a regulatory instrument but also as a mechanism for sustaining social order and cultural continuity.

Abstract

This study examines the excessive, ambiguous, and potentially unfair rules imposed on students as depicted in Shintaro Sugawara’s play title burakku Kōsoku. This study analyzes these rules and describes their impact on students using a qualitative descriptive approach. The theoretical framework employed includes Wellek and Warren’s sociological theory of literature and Danesi’s theory of semiotics. Additionally, this study draws on the views of Ogiue and Kuwajima regarding the forms and impacts of burakku kōsoku in the context of Japanese education. The results of the study indicate that the phenomenon of burakku kōsoku in the drama consists of four forms, namely (1) regulations regarding hair color and style, (2) rules regarding the wearing of uniforms and undergarments, (3) restrictions on activities during the commute to and from school, and (4) regulations regarding students’ personal belongings and extracurricular activities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how narrative silence functions as a culturally productive interpretive strategy in Ismet Fanany’s short story Hadiah dari Rantau. Drawing on reader-response theory, it explores how textual gaps invite readers to construct ethical meaning through culturally situated frameworks rather than explicit narration. This study employs a qualitative interpretive design using close textual analysis. It integrates Iser’s concept of textual gaps and Fish’s notion of interpretive communities, with interpretation grounded in Minangkabau cultural concepts of rantau, malu, and adat. The analysis identifies three interrelated silences: the moral ambiguity surrounding Samsir’s overseas success, Khadijah’s restrained response to moral threat as an enactment of malu, and the narrative resolution through Khadijah’s marriage to Basir, which restores ethical order through adat. The study demonstrates that ethical meaning in the story emerges through readerly engagement with silence, contributing to reader-response criticism and Indonesian literary studies

Abstract

Balikpapan City was pivotal in the pre-independence petroleum industry. As a vital geopolitical asset, it became a strategic WWII theater between Japanese and Allied forces. Military defense remnants including bunkers, trenches, artillery, and military bases are extensively concentrated in East Balikpapan District. However, the physical integrity of these archaeological sites faces severe degradation from rapid population growth and demographic shifts, triggering massive morphological changes to the area. To mitigate this, this study employs a Descriptive-Comparative method utilizing a Geographic Information System (GIS) to precisely map spatial coordinates and artifact distribution patterns. This data serves as a deterministic baseline to formulate protection zoning policies, ensuring the preservation of the historical, scientific, and educational values of these cultural heritage objects amidst rapid urbanization.

Abstract

The Balinese language plays an important role as a cultural identity. However, the use of Balinese among the younger generation is declining due to the influence of technological developments. This study aims to describe the structure of pupuh, learning methods, and obstacles to learning sekar alit at Sekaa Santi Widya Kumara Mekar. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. The theories used are behaviorism and constructivism. The learning methods used include direct methods, reading, audio-lingual, and practice (drill). Learning obstacles include limited time, difficulty reading gaguritan texts, low interest among the younger generation, and limited learning facilities. The results show that the structure of each pupuh has a different pattern according to padalingsa, while the direct and audio-lingual methods are the most effective methods in learning sekar alit. Learning seka alit also serves as an effort to preserve language and culture among the younger generation.

Abstract

Conjunctions play an important role in creating grammatical cohesion by connecting ideas within a text. This study aims to identify the types of conjunctions and analyze their internal and external functions in Fearless by Lauren Roberts based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to identify, classify, and analyze conjunctions throughout the novel. The findings showed that 496 conjunctions were classified into four types: additive, adversative, causal, and temporal. Adversative conjunctions were the most dominant, occurring 195 times. The analysis found that conjunctions serve both internal and external functions, with external functions occurring more frequently (348 occurrences) than internal functions (148 occurrences). These findings indicate that conjunctions contribute not only to grammatical cohesion but also to the development of a clear and coherent narrative.

Abstract

This article offers an aesthetic and thematic reading of three poems by Taufiq Ismail, “The Long Prayer Mat”, “The Prophet Urges Us to Love Orphans”, and “Reed Flowers”, representing three dominant and interrelated dimensions in his poetry: religiosity (vertical relation to God), humanity (horizontal relation to fellow humans), and ecology (environmental relation to nature). Employing Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic semiotics as the primary analytical framework and Kuntowijoyo's prophetic ethics as the synthesis framework, this article analyzes how Taufiq Ismail presents God in every pulse of his poetry through an intertwining of prostration, compassion, and love. The findings demonstrate that these three dimensions form a triadic structure parallel to the pillars of prophetic ethics, transcendence, humanization, and liberation, rooted in Islamic tradition and Minangkabau culture. This article also expands the understanding of prophetic ethics by incorporating the ecological dimension as an integral part of Taufiq Ismail's prophetic vision.
