Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyse the implementation of research article writing assignments in the Lower Plant Taxonomy course and evaluate its impact on the development of students' critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as scientific writing abilities. The model used was Research-Based Learning (RBL) integrated with field exploration (Nature Exploration). The method employed was a descriptive research approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods. The research sample consisted of 29 third-semester students in Biology Education, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected from the assessment of research article assignments based on RPS criteria, as well as semi-structured interviews with lecturers and students. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, while qualitative data were analysed thematically to identify obstacles. The results showed that the implementation of RBL, structured in three phases (Exploration, Communication Interaction, and Reflection), was generally effective in improving competency. Most students, with an achievement rate of over 80%, achieved excellent performance, especially in the technical and structural aspects of writing, such as the preparation of the Research Methodology (92%) and the Suitability of the Bibliography (95%). However, significant obstacles were found in aspects that require critical analysis and in-depth argumentation, characterised by 17% of shallow Discussion errors and 13% of incomplete Data Analysis errors. Interviews confirmed that the main obstacles were limited guidance time, difficulty in determining original topics, and lack of confidence in developing theoretical arguments. The conclusion of this study confirms that PBR has successfully fostered research literacy and scientific attitudes. Its effectiveness needs to be improved through optimising guidance time, strengthening theoretical literacy, and providing special training to develop data analysis and argumentation skills. This model is relevant as an innovative curriculum for preparing prospective biology teachers who are reflective and research-oriented.

Abstract

Empirical evidence reveals that a common obstacle for students in writing a thesis is that they have difficulties in writing literature reviews, formulating a thesis topic or problem, and writing the contents of their thesis. The research was conducted to investigate metacognitive strategies and their impact on writing students’ theses. The research was conducted at the Islamic University of Nahdlatul Ulama (UNISNU) in Jepara. A case study research design guided this research. The participants involved were 30 students, comprising 20 women and 10 men, and the study included semi-structured interviews with 3 thesis supervisors. The findings reveal two main things. First, in the process of using metacognitive strategies, students map and develop writing concepts. Students are guided to compose various effective sentences, elaborating the introduction, main, and conclusion parts of the thesis in detail. Second, in terms of the impact of metacognitive skills, students can understand the contents of the thesis and recognise the characteristics of academic writing, writing procedures, and requirements for selecting topics. It can be concluded that students' metacognitive abilities contribute to the development of quality thesis writing skills.

Abstract

Students' critical thinking skills in Indonesia remained a concern, as evidenced by suboptimal learning outcomes and low problem-solving abilities. This study aimed to (1) develop the feasibility of learning materials, (2) assess their practicality, and (3) determine their effectiveness in enhancing students' critical thinking skills. This development research produced educational tools, including teaching modules (lesson plans) and student worksheets (LKPD). The study used the 4D technique and took place at SMA Negeri 4 Tarakan with 36 students participating.  The results indicated that the learning materials received excellent ratings in content feasibility (81.4%), presentation feasibility (86.5%), language and readability feasibility (89.2%), and graphic feasibility (92.5%). All aspects, including material, language, graphics, and functionality, were classified as highly practical. In the control class, students’ critical thinking skills were classified as moderate (50%), good (11%), very good (13%), and very poor (25%), indicating a concentration within the medium to low range. Meanwhile, the critical thinking skills of the treatment group were categorised as moderate (33%), good (25%), and very good (42%), demonstrating that the developed learning materials were effective in facilitating the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method to enhance the critical thinking skills of Phase E students at SMAN 4 Tarakan

Abstract

This study aims to develop educational media grounded in Pancasila values to enhance multicultural education in higher education. In a diverse society like Indonesia, education that promotes democracy, justice, and inclusivity is becoming increasingly vital. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) methodology based on the Borg & Gall model, this study includes stages of design, development, expert validation, limited user testing, and dissemination. The resulting product comprises five thematic educational media tools, each representing a dimension of multicultural education grounded in one or more principles of Pancasila. Validation was conducted by two civic education experts and five students who had previously taken a Multicultural Education course. Findings indicate that all media were deemed appropriate, with an average evaluation score exceeding 80. Expert feedback highlighted the need for improvements in visual aesthetics, image clarity, and the integration of the curriculum. The study demonstrates that Pancasila-based educational media not only enhance students’ cognitive understanding but also foster critical awareness and inclusive attitudes in civic life. The developed media show strong potential for integration into both Civic Education and Multicultural Education courses at the tertiary level.

Abstract

In today’s world, critical thinking skills are essential for teaching economics. An initial observation at SMAN 2 Tulang Bawang Udik also indicated that the existing teaching methods did not support the development of higher-order thinking skills among students. This study was conducted to determine whether a combination of discovery learning and meaningful learning principles is necessary to foster critical thinking skills among students. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving a sample of 60 grade 10 learners, 2 economics teachers, classroom observations, student surveys, and both structured and semi-structured interviews. Results showed that during lessons, 88% were passive, 62 per cent were below the minimum competency level, and 87% experienced difficulties with abstraction. Furthermore, 85% of students felt that the learning approach was overly theoretical, while most preferred a discovery-based approach. Teachers supported the use of innovative learning models. These results underscore the urgent need for an integrated economics curriculum that incorporates student-centred teaching through discovery and meaningful learning environments to enhance critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Character education is a crucial element in the formation of students who are not only intellectually intelligent but also morally upright, empathetic, and socially responsible. This study aims to describe the character of students and the implementation of student character education at SMA Negeri 3 Tondano. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through direct observation and in-depth interviews with students, teachers, and school staff. Three days of observation revealed that character values, such as discipline, responsibility, honesty, tolerance, and social care, have been fostered through daily habits, social interactions, extracurricular activities, and the school's management environment. The Smile, Greet, Salute (3S) culture and events such as National Education Day celebrations are effective means for character building. The interview results support these findings by emphasising the consistency with which character values are applied in both the school environment and students' daily lives. Teachers serve as role models and guide students in character development, while programs such as the Merdeka Curriculum and the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5) systematically strengthen the character learning process. This research suggests that character education at SMA Negeri 3 Tondano is implemented effectively, thanks to the school’s commitment, the support of its teachers, and the social environment. The findings are expected to serve as a reference in developing optimal character education strategies in senior high schools.

Abstract

The digital learning revolution can be implemented through various models and media, one of which is the development of the Project Citizen model, realised in an application called “SMART MOBILE CIVIC”. It can be stated, addressing the challenge of shaping a comprehensive grand design for national character requires ensuring that character education in higher education adapts to and remains relevant within the evolving landscape of digital era learning transformations. In this context, the present research seeks to formulate a policy framework for strengthening national character by employing the “SMART MOBILE CIVIC” application as an evaluative medium for the Civic Education learning process. The novelty of the socio-cultural science and technology product lies in the 'SMART MOBILE CIVIC' application, a computer/Android-based program designed to integrate national character values and measure digital literacy skills through the 'Character Survey' within the non-cognitive learning aspects of Civic Education.  Data collection was conducted using several methods, including field observation (participant observation), focus group discussions (FGD), in-depth interviews, documentary studies, and questionnaires. Data analysis used in qualitative research is based on the Interactive Analysis Model. According to this model, in data collection, researchers continuously reduce and present data until a conclusion is drawn. The results of the study show that, first, the implementation of national character integration through the “Smart Mobile Civic” application serves as a conceptual and operational reference for the development, implementation, and assessment of grand design at every educational path and level.  The character configuration, in the context of the totality of psychological and socio-cultural processes, is grouped into Spiritual and Emotional Development, Intellectual Development, Physical and Kinesthetic Development, and Affective and Creative Development. Second, the development and implementation of character education need to be carried out by referring to the grand design used as an evaluation of civic education learning through 7 (seven) systematic steps that refer to the measurement of global citizenship competencies.
