Abstract

This research delves into the linguistic intricacies of Justin Bieber's Justice album, employing a comprehensive documentation analysis approach. The study aims to identify and categorize idiomatic expressions within the album, utilizing Fernando's (1996) typology, and subsequently, to explore the associated meanings through Leech's (1981) semantic framework. The research spans a ten-month period from March to December 2023, with a primary focus on idioms in the song lyrics. Through meticulous examination of a diverse range of idiomatic expressions, including pure idioms, semi-idioms, and literal idioms, the study unveils the prevalence and diversity of figurative language in Bieber's songwriting. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of idioms' meanings reveals a predominance of connotative meanings, underscoring the album's richness in emotional and contextual nuances. The research not only advances our understanding of idiomatic expressions but also contributes to broader linguistic and pedagogical contexts. The findings offer valuable insights for English language learners, educators, and researchers, emphasizing the incorporation of contemporary music in language acquisition and the nuanced exploration of meaning types within idioms.

Abstract

The integration of digital technology in higher education has significantly reshaped learning practices and academic engagement. However, the benefits of digital transformation are not evenly distributed among students, leading to persistent inequalities known as the digital divide. This study explores the dimensions and determinants of digital inequality among Tadris Bahasa Inggris (English Education) students at the Islamic Institute of Miftahul Ulum Tanjungpinang. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving 15 undergraduate students. The findings reveal that while students have sufficient access to digital devices and the Internet, disparities exist in digital literacy, motivation, and the quality of technology use. Five main factors contribute to the digital divide: differences in digital competence, psychological barriers, limited institutional support, unequal technological engagement, and overreliance on artificial intelligence. These findings confirm that digital inequality has shifted from physical access to differences in digital engagement and benefits, aligning with Van Dijk’s (2005) multidimensional model. The study emphasizes the need for comprehensive digital literacy programs, curriculum integration of technology, and supportive institutional policies to foster equitable digital learning environments. Theoretically, this research extends the discussion on the second-level digital divide within the context of English language education in Islamic higher education, offering insights for developing inclusive and technology-enhanced pedagogical practices.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of learning methods on the cognitive development of children at Yaa Bunayya Islamic Kindergarten. The research adopts a qualitative approach using a case study design to gain an in-depth understanding of how learning methods are implemented to support children’s cognitive growth. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with teachers, and documentation analysis of learning activities. The findings reveal that the kindergarten applies five main learning methods, namely habituation, gradual instruction, practice-based learning, talqin (guided repetition), and singing. These methods are implemented systematically to stimulate children’s cognitive abilities in a more optimal and structured manner. Through daily routines and consistent learning activities, children demonstrate positive cognitive development that aligns with established child development indicators, including understanding concepts, memory improvement, and problem-solving skills. In addition, the learning system at Yaa Bunayya Islamic Kindergarten has distinctive characteristics compared to conventional kindergartens. Certain activities such as singing and clapping are applied selectively, teachers’ dress codes reflect Islamic values, and routine activities are conducted before classroom learning begins to prepare students mentally and emotionally. Overall, the combination of structured methods, religious values, and consistent routines contributes significantly to supporting children’s cognitive development in a holistic and effective learning environment.

Abstract

Christian Religious Education (PAK) is a process of developing the whole person, emphasizing mastery of theological knowledge and fostering the character, emotions, and spirituality of students to become like Christ. In situations like this, educational psychology is crucial because it helps teachers comprehensively understand the dynamics of student behavior, motivation, and developmental stages. Christian Religious Education teachers can utilize an educational psychology approach to build a more contextual learning process and meet students' spiritual needs. An understanding of psychological theories such as Jean Piaget's cognitive development, Abraham Maslow's motivational theory, Albert Bandura's social learning theory, and Carl Rogers' humanistic approach provides a scientific foundation for Christian Religious Education teachers to implement teaching strategies appropriate to students' developmental stages and personalities. From a Christian perspective, the integration of psychology and theology allows for learning that is not only cognitive but also transformative, encouraging students to experience real growth in faith and a deeper relationship with God. The integration of psychological principles and Christian values not only improves the quality of learning but also reaffirms the primary mission of Christian Religious Education: to develop individuals with faith and character who are able to live out God's love in their daily lives. Therefore, understanding and applying educational psychology is not merely an optional option, but a fundamental necessity in building a Christian Religious Education learning paradigm that is relevant, contextual, and meaningful for today's generation.

Abstract

This study investigates impact of using short animated English-dialogue videos on Indonesian EFL students’ listening comprehension compared to traditional audio-based instruction. Employing a true experimental pretest–posttest control-group design, the research involved 60 second-year English Language Education (ELE) students from Islamic University of Kalimantan Muhammad Arsyad Al-Banjari Banjarmasin, equally divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received instruction via animated video dialogues, while the control group used conventional audio dialogues. Listening comprehension was assessed using validated multiple-choice tests administered before and after a two-week instructional period. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including independent- and paired-samples t-tests, were used to analyze the data. Results showed a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group’s performance (t = 4.79, p < .05), while the control group’s gain was not significant (t = 0.85, p > .05). Moreover, the posttest comparison between groups indicated a significant advantage for the experimental group (t = 2.05, p = .04). These findings suggest that animated video-based instruction enhances listening comprehension more effectively than traditional methods, supporting dual-coding and multimedia learning theories.

Abstract

English-speaking ability is a crucial communication skill that needs to be developed from an early age to enhance students’ competence in the globalized era. However, many elementary school students still struggle to speak English fluently due to the lack of interactive learning media and low self-confidence in expressing ideas. This study aims to analyze the implementation of a digital storytelling application as an innovative learning medium to improve students’ English-speaking skills. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study was carried out through four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and pre- and post-speaking tests to measure students’ improvement in fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and confidence. The findings indicate that the use of digital storytelling significantly enhanced students’ speaking performance, motivation, and engagement in learning activities. Furthermore, the interactive features of the application encouraged students to participate actively and creatively in storytelling sessions, creating a more enjoyable and meaningful language learning experience. Therefore, the integration of digital storytelling in English learning is recommended as an effective pedagogical strategy to foster communication competence and learner autonomy among elementary school students.
