Abstract

This study originates from the gap between students’ conceptual understanding and procedural ability in solving linear function problems in calculus courses. Many students struggle to connect the symbolic representations, graphical interpretations, and applications of linear functions. The purpose of this study is to analyze students’ understanding of linear function concepts based on Van Hiele’s theory, classify students according to Van Hiele’s levels of thinking, and determine the relationship between their thinking levels and learning outcomes. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach involving 59 first-year university students from East Java Province as participants. Data were collected through a diagnostic test structured around Van Hiele’s thinking levels and analyzed using the Item Response Theory (IRT) model to identify item characteristics and students’ ability levels. The results revealed that most students were at the levels of analysis and informal deduction, while only a small proportion reached the formal deduction and rigor levels. The findings indicate that students’ understanding of linear functions remains largely operational and not fully abstract. The implications of this study highlight the importance of applying Van Hiele’s thinking level framework and IRT analysis in designing instructional strategies that enhance students’ abstract thinking skills in understanding linear function concepts.

Abstract

Child growth and development are important indicators of the health and well-being of the future generation of a nation. This study comprehensively examines aspects of early detection of growth and development of children aged 0-72 months based on health regulations in Indonesia, specifically PMK RI Number 66 of 2014. The research method uses a library approach with a qualitative descriptive method through analysis of government regulations, scientific journals, and official publications of health agencies. The results of the study indicate that growth is measured through anthropometric indicators including weight, length/height, and head circumference, while development is assessed through five main aspects: physical-motor, social-emotional, communication-language, cognitive, and learning approaches. KPSP is a standard instrument for screening child development in Indonesia at the ages of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, and 72 months. Various factors influence child growth and development in complex and interrelated ways, including nutritional status, environmental sanitation, parental income and education, immunization history, exclusive breastfeeding, and maternal nutrition during pregnancy. Both undernutrition and overnutrition negatively impact a child's physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development. This study emphasizes the importance of early detection, timely intervention, and a holistic, multifactorial approach to ensuring optimal growth and development of Indonesian children.

Abstract

This research analyzes the relevance of the social reconstruction curriculum model to George S. Counts' philosophy of reconstructionism. The social reconstruction curriculum model encourages students to actively participate in the midst of current societal problems. Meanwhile, George S. Counts' philosophy of reconstructionism views education as the primary tool for reconstructing the social order toward social welfare. This research is motivated by the criticism that the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum is not yet considered fully suitable to be officially adopted as the National Curriculum. This research aims to examine the relevance of the social reconstruction curriculum model as an alternative conceptual framework in the development of the National Curriculum. The method used in this research is library research, which limits the study to only library collections (print and non-print media). The applied analysis technique is Klaus Krippendorff's content analysis. The research findings reveal three main points of relevance between the social reconstruction curriculum model and George S. Counts' philosophy of reconstructionism: relevance based on goals and vision, materials and content, and methods and action. This research found a strong and profound relevance that can serve as an alternative conceptual and philosophical framework for the development of the National Curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perceptions and impacts of the Indonesia Smart Program (Program Indonesia Pintar/PIP) on the educational continuity of children from beneficiary families at the village level. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a mini-research approach. Six participants were purposively selected as active recipients of the PIP in Kedawungwetan Village. The focus of this study lies in the depth of individual experiences rather than the generalization of findings. The theoretical framework includes economic aspects—such as reducing educational costs and increasing human capital investment—and social aspects, including social support, learning motivation, and family educational aspirations. The findings indicate that the PIP plays a significant role in alleviating educational expenses and supporting the continuity of children’s schooling. However, the program’s effectiveness is constrained by several factors, including the relatively small amount of financial aid, delays in fund disbursement, and the lack of social assistance for beneficiaries. These results emphasize that although the PIP has made a positive contribution to improving educational access for underprivileged families, further policy improvements are needed—particularly in increasing the amount of aid and strengthening social support—to achieve equitable education outcomes more effectively.

Abstract

Early literacy skills in reading are an important foundation for early childhood development. Observations at Palam State Kindergarten showed that out of 23 children, 15 still had difficulty recognizing letters and reading simple syllables. This study investigates how learning apps influence the early literacy development of 5-6-year-old children at Palam State Kindergarten, North Tinangkung District, Banggai Islands Regency. The method used in this study is a quantitative experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design on 23 children in group B. The results showed a significant increase, where the average pretest score of 20.91 (category "starting to develop") increased to 32.73 in the posttest (category "developing as expected"). The t-test showed a calculated t value of 36.42 > t table 1.717 (α = 0.05), so Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of learning applications significantly influences the early literacy skills of children aged 5-6 years at Palam State Kindergarten, North Tinangkung District, Banggai Islands Regency.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of silent reading through the use of the Medium App in improving students’ reading comprehension skills. Reading comprehension is an essential language skill that requires learners to understand, interpret, and critically analyze written texts. With the advancement of educational technology, digital applications supported by artificial intelligence—such as the Medium App—offer adaptive features that enable a more personalized and interactive reading experience. Through the silent reading method, students are given the opportunity to read at their own pace without the constraints of oral articulation, allowing for greater focus and deeper processing of meaning. Previous research indicates that silent reading assisted by digital platforms can enhance reading fluency, enrich vocabulary, and improve learning motivation. However, the integration of both approaches has rarely been examined comprehensively. This study employs a literature review approach to explore how the use of the Medium App in silent reading activities can significantly influence students’ reading comprehension. The findings highlight that the combination of silent reading strategies and adaptive technology has the potential to serve as an effective instructional method for improving literacy, particularly among intermediate English language learners.

Abstract

This study explores the distinction in vocabulary enrichment goals between Mechanical Engineering students and English Education students, using Gardner's socio-educational model, which differentiates between instrumental and integrative motivation. Descriptive quantitative design data were collected by using a 24-item questionnaire among 15 Mechanical Engineering students from Politeknik Pelayaran Sorong and 15 English Education students from UHN I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa Denpasar, through purposive sampling. The findings indicate that Mechanical Engineering students have highly emphasized instrumental motivation in learning vocabulary; it is a useful tool for understanding technical texts, equipment operation, and preparation for industry-related communication. On the other hand, English Education students have higher integrative motivation since, for them, learning vocabulary contributes to the development of better communicative competence, cultural understanding, and professional identity as future educators. These results are consistent with Gardner's (1985) theory, which is further supported by disciplinary literacy perspectives indicating that different fields involve different literacy demands, which become determinants of the learners' interests in vocabulary enrichment. It concludes that academic context and career expectations are strong determinants of learners' goals in vocabulary learning, emphasizing differentiated vocabulary instruction. For this reason, ESP-centered vocabulary teaching will be relevant to the technical students, while the English Education students need to be taught vocabulary in a more communicative way and culturally enriched.

Abstract

The digital era has brought significant changes on social interaction patterns, particularly through social media, which has became the primary means of communication for Generation Z. However, this phenomenon also poses moral challenges, such as the spread of hoaxes, cyberbullying, and the degradation of ethical values. This article examines strategies for strengthening the morals of Generation Z through Pancasila as the nation's fundamental ideology, utilizing social media as an educational and outreach tool. Using a qualitative approach through literature analysis and case studies, this study identifies strategies such as interactive digital campaigns, educational content based on Pancasila values, and collaboration between the government, educators, and influencers. The results indicate that the integration of Pancasila in social media content can increase moral awareness, build national identity, and prevent negative digital influences. The implication is that this strategy is not only relevant for Generation Z but also contributes to the formation of a digital society that is ethical and characterized by Pancasila.

Abstract

This study analyzes the semiotic meanings in Shopee’s 9.9 Super Shopping Day advertisement featuring the rookie idol group Hearts2Hearts. Using Roland Barthes’s concept of denotation, connotation, and myth, supported by Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic model of sign (icon, index, and symbol), this research examines how visual and auditory elements construct cultural and emotional meanings. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method by observing and categorizing signs from the advertisement video. The findings reveal that Shopee uses orange color dominance, cheerful jingles, and synchronized choreography to symbolize happiness, energy, and emotional connection. These elements collectively create a myth that associates shopping with joy and efficiency. The advertisement also demonstrates Shopee’s shift toward localized idol representation to strengthen authenticity and audience engagement. This study contributes to the understanding of how semiotic strategies shape consumer perception in Southeast Asian digital advertising and highlights the importance of emotional branding in modern marketing. The results also suggest that semiotic analysis can provide deeper insights into how advertisements influence social values and consumer identity in contemporary media.
