Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has become a crucial component in tourism higher education as the industry increasingly demands graduates who are communicatively competent, professionally confident, and interculturally aware. This article aims to provide a descriptive analysis of current trends, identify key gaps, and propose future directions in ESP curriculum design within tourism higher education. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study synthesizes relevant literature on ESP, tourism education, and curriculum development to map prevailing pedagogical practices and conceptual challenges. The findings indicate that contemporary ESP tourism curricula have shown a positive movement toward speaking-oriented, task-based, and performance-driven instruction that reflects the needs of workplace communication. However, significant gaps persist between students’ linguistic competence and their readiness to perform professional communication in authentic tourism contexts. These gaps are primarily attributed to the limited integration of industry-based service scenarios, psychological readiness factors such as confidence and willingness to communicate, and the development of intercultural competence. The discussion highlights the need to reconceptualize ESP tourism not merely as linguistic pedagogy, but as professional communication pedagogy that emphasizes service-oriented discourse, authentic tasks, and learner readiness. This article concludes that a holistic ESP tourism curriculum, integrating linguistic, psychological, cultural, and professional dimensions, is essential to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world tourism communication. The study offers conceptual implications for curriculum designers and educators and recommends future empirical research across diverse local and global tourism contexts to validate further and refine ESP tourism curriculum models.

Abstract

Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) as the oldest and most authentic Islamic educational institution in Indonesia play a central role not only as transmitters of religious knowledge but also as shapers of Islamic civilization in the archipelago. This qualitative case study at Pesantren Tremas and Pesantren Langitan aims to examine the scholarly tradition of pesantren, which is built upon the foundations of sanad (chain of transmission), the study of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), and the bandongan and sorogan learning methods, as well as its contribution to framing a moderate Indonesian Islamic civilization. The research findings indicate that this scholarly tradition successfully forms a distinct epistemology and intellectual habitus, producing a synthesis between the authenticity of tradition (al-muhafazhah ‘ala al-qadim al-shalih) and adaptation to modernity (al-akhdzu bi al-jadid al-aslah) through the integration of religious (naqliyah) and general/scientific (kauniyah) sciences. Tangible contributions are manifested in the preservation of classical Islamic heritage, the reproduction of networks of moderate Islamic scholars, the indigenization of Islamic values, and the instillation of social ethics that uphold harmony. Although faced with challenges of digitalization and educational competition, the adaptive capacity of pesantren through methodological revitalization and the digitalization of classical texts. ensures the continuity of its role as a laboratory and dynamist for a character-driven Indonesian Islamic civilization.

Abstract

The use of English songs has been widely discussed as an alternative medium in English language teaching. Songs are believed to create a more enjoyable learning atmosphere and increase students’ motivation, especially in online learning contexts. This study aimed to explore university students’ perceptions of integrating English songs into online English language teaching. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The study was conducted at Universitas Negeri Makassar with first semester students from the Management Study Program who attended an online English language course. The course was delivered fully online using Zoom over one academic semester. English songs were integrated as supporting instructional media during online classes, such as for warm-up activities, listening exposure, and background media. Data were collected through semi-structured written interviews and non-participant observation. The data were analysed using thematic analysis to identify recurring themes related to students’ perceptions. The findings revealed that students generally had positive perceptions toward the use of English songs in online English classes. English songs were perceived to increase students’ motivation and create a more relaxed and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Students also reported higher engagement and attention during online classes when songs were used. In addition, English songs were perceived to support language learning, particularly in improving listening comprehension and vocabulary awareness. However, some challenges were also identified, such as difficulty understanding fast song lyrics, differences in music preferences, and technical issues during online learning. In conclusion, this study suggests that integrating English songs into online English language teaching can provide motivational and pedagogical benefits when used appropriately. English songs can be considered as a supportive instructional medium to enhance students’ engagement and learning experience in online higher education contexts.

Abstract

This study investigated the types and functions of illocution in some of Benjamin Netanyahu's speeches, focusing on how language was used strategically to influence public opinion and national morality during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By using a qualitative approach and classification of John Searle's illocutional acts, namely representative, commissionic, directive, expressive and declarative. This study analyzed transcripts of Benjamin Netanyahu's speeches delivered in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The analysis revealed that there were four types of illocution actions found: representative, commissive, expressive and directive. Representative actions are most often used, especially in situations that are intended to be convincing. This act of speech affirms political positions, strengthens national unity, and influences public perceptions around the world. The study shows how Netanyahu uses language strategically to encourage patriotism, political action, and public behavior. This study expands the field of pragmatism and political discourse analysis, emphasizes the importance of speech in narrative shaping during conflicts, and encourages a more critical understanding of political communication.

Abstract

This article discusses the implementation of educational facilities and infrastructure management at the junior high school level and its implications for the learning process. The study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach through a literature review, analyzing various relevant references in the form of journal articles, books, and regulations related to facilities and infrastructure standards. The discussion focused on the stages of management, including planning, procurement, inventory, utilization and maintenance, disposal, as well as supervision and evaluation. The synthesis results show that effective implementation is supported by planning based on learning needs, orderly asset administration, and routine maintenance to ensure that facilities remain suitable and ready for use. Common obstacles include budget constraints, inadequate or outdated facilities, and limited human resources and technical competence in infrastructure management. Meanwhile, supporting factors include the commitment of school leaders, collaboration between school members and committees, effective communication, and discipline in management procedures. In general, good infrastructure management has implications for increased learning comfort, support for ICT integration, strengthening of library services, and the creation of a more conducive learning environment.

Abstract

In order to address the issues of classroom management, media integration, and listening-speaking progression that teachers at PPA Kramer Hilina'a Gunungsitoli faced with 18 students ages 6 to 9, this research and development (R&D) study created Total Physical Response (TPR)-based English teaching modules using the ADDIE model. The class D English instructor served as the study population. Semi-structured interviews and TPR classroom observations were used to gather data, which was then subjected to content analysis. Three primary needs were identified by the findings: listening-speaking hurdles, current media structuring (PPT, flashcards, videos), and movement classroom management (73% interview codes). The module increased student engagement from 62% (11/18 students) to 89% (16/18 students), command-response frequency from 8 to 21 per session, and verbal repetition from 9/18 to 15/18 students (83%) after it was tested in two class D sessions and validated by experts (score 4.2/5 or 84%). This low-tech lesson can be replicated in PAUDs with limited funding and space, giving non-specialist teachers formal TPR assistance utilizing already-existing resources at no further cost. Single respondent and short trial duration are research limitations; subsequent long-term testing across several PAUDs is advised.

Abstract

Syntactic analysis plays a very important role in understanding sentence structure in journalistic texts. By analyzing syntax, learners can understand how sentence elements such as phrases, clauses, and word order are arranged to form accurate meaning. The aim of this research is to conduct a syntactic analysis of noun phrase (NP) structures as they appear in BBC online news. The research subjects used in this study are six BBC news headlines related to natural disasters, which were selected and adjusted based on recent events that have attracted significant attention from various countries around the world. The results of this study show that noun phrase (NP) structures play a crucial role in conveying the main information in a concise and effective manner. Because they can present the core event, location, and severity of the disaster compactly, while also reflecting the characteristic style of journalistic language that maintain brevity and clarity.
