Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between learning readiness, character moderation, and viewing comprehension skills in elementary school students. Viewing comprehension is increasingly recognized as a crucial language ability for addressing 21st-century challenges and adapting to digital media. The research used a quantitative approach and a descriptive-correlational design with multiple linear regression analyses. It looked at 76 teachers and 76 fifth-grade students from eight elementary schools in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. The research instruments included a questionnaire for assessing learning readiness, a questionnaire for character moderation, and a viewing comprehension test based on Minimum Competency Assessment items. Findings show that learning readiness and character moderation don't have a big effect on students' ability to understand what they're watching. An R² value of 0.006 and a significance level of p > 0.05 show that neither factor makes a significant difference. However, this does not rule out the potential for a relationship; thus, it implies the necessity to explore other internal and external variables that may affect viewing comprehension further.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving skills remain a persistent challenge for elementary students, partly due to the lack of contextual learning approaches that connect mathematics with local culture. However, limited empirical evidence examines whether integrating local wisdom into learning models can enhance students’ problem-solving performance across gender. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Discovery Learning integrated with Lampung local wisdom on students’ mathematical problem-solving skills and to examine whether this effect differs by gender. Using a quasi-experimental 2×2 factorial design, this study involved 41 fifth-grade students at a public elementary school in Pesisir Barat Regency, selected through random sampling. Data were collected using a validated problem-solving test and analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The results indicated that: (1) the learning model had a significant effect on problem-solving skills, (2) there was no significant difference between male and female students, and (3) no interaction effect was found between learning model and gender. These findings highlight the effectiveness of culturally integrated Discovery Learning in improving students’ mathematical problem-solving skills in an inclusive manner. The study contributes to the growing literature on culturally responsive mathematics instruction and encourages educators to use local-wisdom-based approaches to support equitable 21st-century skill development.

Abstract

In the digital era, social media serves not only as a medium for communication and entertainment but also as a potential tool for developing academic competencies such as critical reading. This study aims to examine the relationship between social media use and critical thinking ability in relation to university students’ critical reading skills in Yogyakarta. Employing a quantitative method with a correlational approach, the research involved a sample of 40 students selected through stratified random sampling. Data were gathered using questionnaires, critical thinking tests, and critical reading assessments, all validated through Cronbach’s Alpha. The findings revealed a significant correlation among social media use, critical thinking ability, and critical reading skills. Regression analysis indicated that critical thinking ability had a significant effect on critical reading skills, whereas the influence of social media use was less pronounced. However, simultaneous analysis demonstrated that social media use and critical thinking ability together contributed to the improvement of critical reading skills. These results highlight the dual role of social media as both a facilitator and a distraction in academic contexts. Educators are therefore encouraged to incorporate media literacy and critical thinking training to optimize the positive impact of social media on students’ learning processes.

Abstract

This study employs an action research method consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection to enhance elementary students’ social skills and learning outcomes at Private Elementary School SYPPK Salib Suci Agats. The research follows a classroom action research model as outlined by Kemmis and McTaggart. Fifth-grade students (20 in total) at Private Elementary School YPPK Salib Suci Agats served as the subjects. Data was collected through both test and non-test techniques. Various assessment instruments, such as descriptive problem-solving tests, attitude rating scales, and learning implementation observation sheets, were used to gather data. The initial findings showed that only 5 out of 20 students (25%) achieved scores above the Minimum Mastery Criterion (MMC), indicating they met the required competency. After the first action cycle, the number of students scoring above the MMC increased to 11 students (55%), while 9 students (45%) remained below the MMC, necessitating a second cycle. Following reflections on the first cycle, certain shortcomings were identified (particularly the less-than-optimal use of learning media), which were addressed in the second cycle by incorporating concrete learning media. As a result, by the end of the second cycle, 17 students (85%) scored above the MMC. This improvement demonstrates the effectiveness of contextual learning in raising both the social skills and academic performance of the students.

Abstract

Reading literacy skills are a fundamental competency for elementary school students. However, various surveys indicate that the level of reading literacy in Indonesia remains low. This situation underscores the need for innovative learning media that are engaging, contextual, and aligned with the characteristics of the digital generation. This study aims to investigate trends in the use of digital comics in primary education—particularly for improving reading literacy and integrating local wisdom—during the 2020–2025 period. The study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by PRISMA methodology, encompassing the stages of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion. Data were gathered from Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and Crossref. From an initial 3,358 articles, a final selection of 27 relevant articles was obtained. Analysis was conducted via content analysis and bibliometric techniques using VOSviewer 1.6.19. The results show a significant increase in publications on e-comics from 2020 to 2023. Digital comics were found to be effective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension, motivation, and character development through the integration of local cultural values. They also have the potential to serve as an innovative and contextually relevant, culture-based multimodal learning medium.

Abstract

Character education is a key pillar of global education reform, encompassing moral, spiritual, and social values. This study investigates the effectiveness of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) based on Tri Hita Karana (THK) values in improving students’ social awareness and relational skills. A quasi-experimental design was used with eighth-grade students and social studies teachers as subjects, and data were collected through observations, surveys, and document analysis. Descriptive and inferential analyses (including t-tests and MANOVA) were conducted. The outcomes show that incorporating THK values into SEL resulted in high levels of social awareness among students as well as significant improvements in their relational skills. Statistical tests confirmed that students in the SEL-THK (SEL based on Tri Hita Karana) group had significantly higher social awareness and relational skill outcomes than those in conventional learning. Moreover, the implementation of SEL based on THK values had a significant simultaneous positive effect on both social awareness and relational skills. These findings suggest that a THK-based SEL approach can holistically enhance key social-emotional competencies in students.
