Abstract

The low learning outcomes in Indonesian language subjects at the elementary school level indicate an urgent need for learning innovations that are relevant to student characteristics and local cultural contexts. This study aims to analyze the need for developing interactive learning media based on local wisdom for Indonesian language learning in the fourth grade of elementary school. Utilizing a research and development (R&D) design, this study focuses on the preliminary study stage using a descriptive approach. The research was conducted in Cluster IV, Marga Subdistrict, Tabanan Regency, involving 5 fourth grade teachers and 74 students as primary data sources. Data collection techniques included classroom observations, structured interviews, and documentation of student learning outcomes. The data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive techniques. The results revealed that learning remains dominated by a teacher centered approach (observed in 100% of the sample schools), limited use of interactive media, and suboptimal integration of local wisdom. Furthermore, learning outcome data showed that 68% of the 74 students failed to reach the Learning Objective Achievement Criteria (KKTP). This low achievement reinforces the urgency of developing contextual and interactive media. The needs analysis concludes that teachers and students require visual, user friendly learning media that integrate Indonesian language materials with specific local cultures such as Balinese folktales and the Subak agricultural environment to foster meaningful learning. This preliminary study provides a foundational framework for developing local wisdom based interactive learning media to improve elementary students' literacy skills.

Abstract

The phenomenon of bullying at the elementary school level can threaten mental health and adversely affect student learning outcomes. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of a Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) teaching module based on anti bullying education on the learning outcomes of fifth grade students. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model and a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique involving two classes in Cluster I, Kediri District, namely the experimental class and the control class. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and learning outcome tests (pre test and post test) that had been tested for validity and reliability. The results showed a significant difference in improvement (gain). The average post test score of the experimental class increased by 20.9 points, while the control class only increased by 3.4 points. There was a difference in learning outcomes of 16.4 points between the two classes after treatment. Thus, the anti bullying education based IPAS teaching module is declared valid, effective, and feasible to use to improve learning outcomes while instilling empathy and anti bullying character in students.

Abstract

Character education is a central objective of Hindu Religious Education, yet classroom practice may remain dominated by cognitive attainment and provide limited opportunities for students to embody religious, social, and ecological values. This study examined the integration of Tri Hita Karana in Hindu Religious Education at SMP Negeri 4 Sukasada. It focused on the forms of integration, the learning process, and the implications for student character. A qualitative descriptive-analytic design was employed. Nine purposively selected informants represented school leadership, the Hindu Religious Education teacher, counseling and social studies teachers, the school greening program, and students. Data were generated through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, then interpreted using the interactive model of data collection, condensation, display, and conclusion verification. Trustworthiness was strengthened through source and method triangulation, member checking, peer discussion, and persistent observation. The findings show that Parahyangan, Pawongan, and Palemahan were incorporated into learning objectives, materials, teaching modules, classroom methods, media, and authentic assessment. Integration was enacted through teacher modeling, habituation, contextual and collaborative learning, direct experience, reflection, positive reinforcement, and alignment with school culture. Religious character developed through disciplined prayer, reverence, sraddha, and bhakti; social character developed through cooperation, tolerance, empathy, and respectful communication; and environmental character developed through cleanliness routines, waste management, greening, and conservation activities. The study concludes that Tri Hita Karana functions effectively as a holistic value framework when it is embedded consistently across planning, classroom experience, assessment, and institutional culture rather than presented only as religious content or ceremonial practice.

Abstract

Qur’anic memorization (tahfidzul Qur’an) is commonly implemented in Islamic schools as a religious and character-building program. However, its potential as a structured environment for developing students’ verbal-linguistic abilities remains insufficiently examined, particularly at the junior secondary school level. This study investigates how a Qur’anic memorization program supports students’ verbal-linguistic development through talaqqi, tikrar, muroja’ah, and memorization recitation activities. A descriptive qualitative design was employed at SMP IT MANTAB, Siak Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews with the school principal, Qur’anic memorization teacher, Islamic Religious Education teacher, and students, as well as documentation. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the memorization program functions as a structured and continuous verbal-learning environment rather than merely a religious routine. Talaqqi stimulates auditory attention, phonological accuracy, and oral reproduction; tikrar strengthens verbal retention and fluency through systematic repetition; while muroja’ah supports retrieval, text maintenance, and confidence in oral performance. Students’ verbal-linguistic development was reflected in more fluent Qur’anic recitation, stronger verbal memory, greater speaking confidence, increased classroom participation, and improved engagement with Islamic Religious Education materials. Viewed through Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences framework and Vygotskian perspectives, the findings suggest that Qur’anic memorization can simultaneously support linguistic and spiritual development. The study highlights the importance of designing tahfidz programs beyond memorization targets toward broader linguistic learning outcomes.

Abstract

Critical and creative thinking are designated as core competencies in the Indonesian curriculum, yet student attainment in both domains remains low, and project-based learning is frequently proposed as a remedy. Existing meta-analyses have synthesised the two skills separately, so it remains unknown whether project-based learning benefits one more than the other. This study estimates the pooled effect of project-based learning on critical and creative thinking within a single meta-analytic model and tests whether the two effects differ. Following PRISMA 2020, searches of OpenAlex and Crossref for open-access publications from 2015 to 2026 identified 194 records, screened down to 15 effect sizes from experimental, quasi-experimental, and one-group pre-experimental studies at the primary and junior secondary levels. Effects were computed as Hedges' g and pooled with a random-effects model estimated by restricted maximum likelihood, followed by moderator, sensitivity, and publication-bias analyses. The pooled effect was large, g = 1.57 (95% CI 1.09 to 2.04), with high heterogeneity (I-squared = 88.0%). Effects on critical thinking (g = 1.70) and creative thinking (g = 1.46) did not differ significantly, Q_M(1) = 0.26, p = .610. The only significant moderator was research design, Q_M(1) = 6.90, p = .009: one-group studies reported effects twice as large (g = 2.56) as controlled studies (g = 1.24). Project-based learning strengthens both thinking skills without favouring either, but reported magnitudes are inflated by weak designs, so the conservative estimate of g = 1.24 is the more defensible benchmark.
