Abstract

Community Dentistry has a role to play in improving understanding and quality community dental with oral health through counseling and community dentistry services. Community dentistry services are services where operators must be able to recognize signs and symptoms of the possibility that patients are suffering from systemic diseases that can affect oral hygiene conditions. The aim of this writing is to report scientifically on community dentistry services based on the results of an assessment of health problems in the family. The respondent in this Community Dentistry activity was one of the residents assisted by RW 3, consisting of: mother IH, aged 46 years and brother NA, aged 12 years. Results and discussion: the dental health of the inmates, the condition of the patient's teeth and mouth was in poor condition where the results of the examination were poor OHI, there was bleeding on the gingiva, remaining roots, caries, and loss of several teeth due to caries. The results of Community Dentistry activities in assisted families, Mrs. IH had moderate oral hygiene with an OHI score of 6 before being given curative services in the form of scaling and root planing (SRP), after SRP was carried out, oral hygiene was good with an OHI score of 1.7. This means that there is a decrease in the OHI score after being given curative efforts in the form of SRP. Conclusion: Community dental services begin by preparing an intervention plan based on the results of an assessment of health problems in the family and will provide good intervention results and feedback to the patient's family who cooperate in following input and suggestions by the dentist and other health workers.

Abstract

Dental plaque is a collection of bacteria embedded in an organic polymer matrix on the tooth surface, which is the main cause of most dental and oral diseases such as caries and periodontal disease. The most important thing to control the accumulation of dental plaque is to brush your teeth with the right technique using toothpaste. The movement when brushing teeth is effective in eliminating plaque, while the antibacterial composition of toothpaste is effective against plaque-forming bacteria. The potential of rambutan honey as an antibacterial agent in toothpaste has been known because honey has high osmolarity, low pH, contains hydrogen peroxide, phenolic acids, and flavonoids. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of rambutan honey toothpaste in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria that can form a biofilm and is thought to act as an pathogen of periodontal disease. This research method was an in vitro laboratory experiment with Kirby Bauer diffusion method, to test the inhibitory power of 60% rambutan honey toothpaste, toothpaste base, chloramphenicol as a positive control, and sterile aquadest as a negative control. The zone of inhibition of the growth of Staphylococcus aureus formed on Mueller Hinton Agar media was measured using a caliper. Results of this research showed that rambutan honey toothpaste had an inhibitory effect, not different from chloramphenicol (p=0.081), and different from aquadest (p=0.001), due to the antibacterial activity of honey from high osmolarity, low pH, contains hydrogen peroxide, phenolic acid, and flavonoids. Rambutan honey toothpaste was not different from the toothpaste base (p=0.096), related to its low solubility so that the spread of antibacterial was slow. It was concluded that rambutan honey toothpaste could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, there was no difference with chloramphenicol and there was a difference with aquadest, but there was no difference with toothpaste base.

Abstract

Introduction: Maxillofacial trauma is an injury related to the face or jaw caused by physical force, foreign objects, or burns, including injury to any of the bone structures, skin, and soft tissue of the face. Every part of the face may be affected, the eyes and their muscles, nerves and blood vessels may be injured which can cause visual disturbances, diplopia, dislocation of the eyeball and the orbital bones can be fractured due to being hit by something strong. Case report: Initial examination carried out pain screening using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) method showing a score of 4. Assessment of the level of consciousness using the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) method showed a GCS result of 15 (E4 M6 V5). Vital signs examination showed blood pressure 134/78 mmHg, pulse 112x/minute, height 160 cm, weight 90 kg, respiration 22x/minute, temperature 36.4 C, oxygen saturation 98%. Physical examination of the patient found that the head was within normal limits, the lip mucosa was wet (+). In the oral and nasal cavities, sources of bleeding and loose teeth are visible. On eye examination, the skin was normal. Thorax examination was normal. The management carried out was administration of intravenous fluids (inf RL 20 tpm), then injection of 1 ampoule of ranitidine, 1 ampoule of ketorolac injection, 500 mg tranexamic acid injection. The patient was also referred to a dentist who specializes in oral surgery for further examination and treatment. Conclusion: The classification of the dentoalveolar fracture in this patient is based on the Ellis and Davey classification, as a class 7 fracture, namely a fracture of the tooth that causes a change in position or displacement of the tooth. This fracture causes loose teeth and injury to the gingival soft tissue. The ideal dentoalveolar fracture treatment in this patient uses interdental wiring so that the teeth can be maintained properly. The patient was also referred to a dentist who specializes in oral surgery for further examination and treatment.

Abstract

Tooth extraction is the process of removing teeth from the alveolar bone and will result in damage to hard and soft tissue. The healing process after tooth extraction can be accelerated by administering drugs, for example dexamethasone, but this drug has side effects. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of ethanol extract gel from red shoot leaves on the alveolar bone density of Wistar rats after tooth extraction. This research is an experimental laboratory, with a posttest only control group research design. The samples in this study were 25 male Wistar rats which were divided into 2 control groups given povidone iodine and gel base, and 3 treatment groups given red shoot leaf ethanol extract gel with concentrations of 2%, 4% and 6%. On the 30th day, Wistar rats were euthanized and alveolar bone samples were taken, radiographs were taken using dental x-ray and bone density was assessed using Image-J. This study shows a p value of0.000 (p < 0.005), meaning that there are at least two groups with significantly different average alveolar bone densities. The highest average alveolar bone density value was in the group (K3) which was given 6% red shoot leaf ethanol extract gel. The conclusion of the research shows that administration of red shoot leaf ethanol extract gel with a concentration of 6% can increase the alveolar bone density of Wistar rats after tooth extraction.

Abstract

Background: Chlorine dioxide is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent that operates on the same principle as sodium hypochlorite, oxidizing bacterial cells and leading to cell death. Unlike sodium hypochlorite, which is toxic to periradicular tissues, chlorine dioxide is considered more biocompatible and has no toxic effects on humans up to a concentration of 3000 ppm (0.3%). The concentration of 0.1% is commonly used in commercial mouthwashes, while 0.3% represents the highest non-toxic concentration of chlorine dioxide. Objective: This study aims to determine the comparative antibacterial effects of chlorine dioxide at concentrations of 0.1% and 0.3% on the growth of Enterococcus faecalis. Methods: This research is an in vitro experimental laboratory study. The test groups used chlorine dioxide concentrations of 0.1% and 0.3%, sodium hypochlorite 2.5% as a positive control, and aquades as a negative control. The antibacterial efficacy of chlorine dioxide was tested against Enterococcus faecalis using the disc diffusion method to determine the zone of inhibition. The results of the zone of inhibition measurements were then analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA and Post Hoc tests. Results: This study revealed that chlorine dioxide at 0.3% has a larger mean zone of inhibition than chlorine dioxide at 0.1%, although it is still lower than sodium hypochlorite at 2.5%. Conclusion:Chlorine dioxide at a concentration of 0.3% exhibits a higher antibacterial effect than chlorine dioxide at 0.1% against Enterococcus faecalis.

Abstract

Older people tend to have a high prevalence of tooth loss due to age factors and dental and oral diseases. To overcome this, the elderly use dentures to restore masticatory and speech functions, improve aesthetics, and maintain the health of existing oral tissue, thereby preventing further damage. This condition determines the quality of life of elderly patients. So, this research aims to determine the effect of using dentures on the quality of life of the elderly at the integrated clinic RSGM Maranatha Christian University. Measuring the quality of life of elderly patients who use dentures using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) instrument, which consists of 12 questions covering the dimensions of physical function, psycho-social function, and pain or discomfort. The research results show that most older people have a quality of life in the good category. The quality-of-life dimension based on the GOHAI instrument shows that most respondents admitted that the physical function dimension related to the use of dentures tends to cause their quality of life to be good. One of the statements with the most value in respondents' opinions is about limiting the types of food that can be eaten.

Abstract

Penelitian eksperimental laboratorium in vitro dengan post-test only with control group design. Larutan irigasi ekstrak daun Stevia menunjukkan rata-rata nilai persentase hambatan biofilm C.albicans berkisar 34,24%-69,70%, sedangkan kontrol positif sebesar 96,87%. Aktivitas hambatan biofilm larutan irigasi ekstrak daun Stevia konsentrasi 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,125% terhadap C.albicans lebih kecil signifikan dibandingkan NaOCL 2,5% namun lebih besar signifikan dibandingkan kontrol negatif dengan rata-rata persentase aktivitas hambatan biofilm sebesar 34,24%-69,70%.
