Abstract

Oral health is an important aspect of maintaining overall health. Street children are a vulnerable group with limited access to health information and services, especially oral health. The problem identified by researchers is the inadequate knowledge of oral health among street children. The purpose of this study was to understand the difference in dental health knowledge before and after providing education using pop-up books to street children. The research method used was a pre-experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 36 street children at Sanggar Alang-Alang. Data were collected using questionnaires administered before and after the education session. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test. The results of the study showed a significant difference in the average knowledge score before the intervention, which was 58.47 ± 9.770, and increased to 84.44 ± 6.947 after the pop-up book intervention (ρ=0.000). Conclusion: there was a difference in dental health knowledge before and after the intervention using pop-up books.

Abstract

Scoliosis is a spinal disorder that causes an abnormal sideways curvature of more than 10 degrees and can have a significant impact on quality of life. In severe cases of scoliosis, surgery is performed to prevent the progression of the curvature. However, postoperative pain (post op scoliosis) is one of the main complaints that can hinder the recovery process. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Deep Breathing Exercise and Exercise Therapy interventions in reducing pain in post op scoliosis patients. The case study was conducted on one patient who underwent intervention six times from 20 April to 2 May 2025. Pain evaluation was performed using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) every therapy session. The results showed a decrease in pressure pain from a score of 4 to 2 and motion pain from a score of 6 to 4, with silent pain remaining at a score of 0. This decrease indicates that the combination of Deep Breathing Exercise and Exercise Therapy interventions is effective in reducing pain in postoperative scoliosis patients.

Abstract

Abstrak. Lansia dengan physical frailty mengalami penurunan kemampuan fisik seperti kekuatan otot, keseimbangan, dan aktivitas fungsional, yang berdampak langsung terhadap kualitas hidup. Kondisi ini memerlukan intervensi fisioterapi yang tepat untuk mendukung peningkatan fungsi dan kemandirian. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh balance exercise dan functional exercise terhadap peningkatan kualitas hidup lansia dengan physical frailty. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan desain studi kasus dengan satu partisipan lansia yang menjalani 12 sesi intervensi fisioterapi. Latihan yang diberikan meliputi Standing Marching, Heel Raises, Chair Squats, dan Sit-to-Stand, dengan fokus pada penguatan otot, peningkatan koordinasi, dan stabilitas tubuh. Evaluasi dilakukan menggunakan WHOQOL-BREF sebelum dan sesudah intervensi. Hasil: Menunjukkan adanya peningkatan fungsi fisik dan skor kualitas hidup dari nilai 40 dengan kategori buruk menjadi nilai 45 dengan kategori sedang, meskipun belum signifikan secara kuantitatif dalam jangka waktu intervensi yang singkat. Kesimpulan: Balance exercise dan functional exercise berpotensi efektif dalam meningkatkan kualitas hidup lansia dengan physical frailty jika dilakukan secara konsisten dan dalam durasi yang lebih panjang. Program ini dapat direkomendasikan sebagai bagian dari intervensi fisioterapi pada populasi lansia.

Abstract

Dementia is a progressive neurological condition characterised by a decline in cognitive function, memory and behaviour, which significantly affects an individual's activities of daily living. As the number of elderly increases, the prevalence of dementia also shows an increasing trend and is a major challenge in geriatric health services. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of motor-cognitive dual-task training in improving cognitive function in the elderly with dementia. This research uses a case study method on one subject who meets the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The intervention was conducted for four weeks, totaling 12 sessions with a frequency of three times per week. Each session lasted 30-45 minutes and consisted of a combination of physical activities performed in conjunction with cognitive tasks. The exercises were designed to stimulate various domains of cognitive function as measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), including orientation, attention and calculation, short-term memory, language, and visuospatial abilities. Evaluation of cognitive function was conducted using the MMSE before and after the intervention. The results showed an increase in MMSE score from 21 to 24, indicating an improvement in cognitive function by 14.3%, although still in the mild dementia category. These findings support that motor-cognitive dual-task training can be an effective physiotherapy approach to improve cognitive function in patients with dementia.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. The WHO Cardiovascular Risk Chart Laboratory-Based was developed as a screening tool to predict the 10-year risk of CVD events. However, its validity in Indonesia remains to be evaluated. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of the WHO Cardiovascular Risk Chart Laboratory-Based and to analyze the relationship between risk factors such as age, gender, smoking status, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol level, and diabetes mellitus status and the occurrence of CVD. This is a quantitative study with a retrospective cross-sectional approach using secondary data from outpatient medical records at RSUP Dr. Sitanala from January 2024 to March 2025. A total of 210 respondents were included. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis, chi-square tests, and diagnostic tests using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve to obtain values of AUC, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, LR⁺, LR⁻, and accuracy. A total of 107 respondents (51%) were diagnosed with CVD. The AUC value was 0.564 (p = 0.107; 95% CI: 0.487–0.642), indicating low predictive ability. Sensitivity was 66.36%, specificity 41.75%, PPV 54.2%, NPV 54.43%, LR⁺ 1.139, LR⁻ 0.806, and overall prediction accuracy was 54.3%. Significant associations were found between gender, smoking status, and total cholesterol level with the occurrence of CVD (p < 0.05). The WHO Cardiovascular Risk Chart Laboratory-Based demonstrated low predictive ability in the Indonesian cohort, different from validation in Malaysia and Sri Lanka, so local calibration is needed. Several risk factors showed significant associations with CVD occurrence.

Abstract

Daily calorie needs play an important role in maintaining health and supporting a balanced lifestyle. Conventional approaches, such as Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), are commonly used to estimate calorie requirements. However, these methods may have limitations in representing individual physiological variability. This study developed a web-based daily calorie recommendation system using a Hybrid Mamdani Fuzzy approach. The proposed method integrates conventional BMR and TDEE calculations with Mamdani fuzzy inference to generate individualized calorie recommendations. The input variables included age, height, weight, gender, and physical activity level. The fuzzy inference process consisted of fuzzification, rule evaluation using 81 fuzzy rules, aggregation with the MAX operator, and centroid defuzzification. The system was implemented using Python, Flask, and the Scikit-Fuzzy library. Statistical evaluation was conducted using 100 testing scenarios representing various user characteristics. The results showed that the proposed system generated calorie adjustment values ranging from approximately −95 kcal/day to +89 kcal/day relative to conventional TDEE calculations. These findings indicate that the fuzzy inference mechanism functioned as a refinement layer within the calorie recommendation process. Overall, the proposed system demonstrates the feasibility of integrating conventional calorie estimation methods with fuzzy reasoning in a web-based decision-support environment for nutritional planning.

Abstract

Stunting is a public health problem that has a long-term impact on reducing the quality of human resources. Ngemplak District recorded 821 stunting cases among children under five in 2024, making it the area with the highest stunting burden in Boyolali Regency. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of stunting prevalence based on the accessibility of health facilities and basic immunization coverage using a Geographic Information System approach. The research design is descriptive quantitative with an ecological spatial approach using a total population of 821 cases spread across 12 villages. The analysis was carried out through mapping stunting prevalence per village, immunization coverage overlay, 1 km radius health facility buffering using QGIS 3.34, as well as global spatial autocorrelation (Global Moran's I) and local spatial autocorrelation (LISA) using GeoDa. The highest stunting prevalence was found in Sobokerto Village (16.3%), Ngargorejo (15.9%), and Manggung (15.1%), while the lowest prevalence was recorded in Giriroto Village (6.4%). Two villages recorded immunization coverage below the national target of 90%, namely Sawahan (88.5%) and Giriroto (79.4%). Buffering analysis results show that 10 out of 12 villages are within the reach of health facilities, while Manggung and Ngargorejo villages are outside the 1 km radius. The Global Moran's I value of -0.0637 (pseudo p-value = 0.3750) indicates a globally random spatial distribution pattern. LISA analysis identified Manggung Village as a high-low spatial outlier (p = 0.05), indicating significant local spatial correlation in that area. This study concludes that stunting determinants are local and spatially independent, requiring contextual intervention strategies per village, prioritizing Manggung and Ngargorejo villages through expanded health facility reach, and Sobokerto Village through specific local risk factor approaches.

Abstract

Vaginal discharge is a common reproductive health issue experienced by women of childbearing age and can cause discomfort and increase the risk of reproductive health problems if not properly managed. One widely used non-pharmacological treatment option is a decoction of green betel leaf (Piper betle L.), as it contains active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and essential oils that possess antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of green betel leaf decoction against vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age at the Kimia Farma BSD Clinic in 2025. The study employed a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study sample comprised 36 women of childbearing age experiencing vaginal discharge, selected using purposive sampling. The intervention involved the use of green betel leaf decoction for 10 days. Data were collected via questionnaires before and after the intervention, then analysed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test with a significance level of 5%. The results of the study showed a reduction in the incidence of vaginal discharge following the intervention, as indicated by an increase in the number of respondents who did not experience vaginal discharge and a decrease in the number of respondents with pathological vaginal discharge. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the pre- and post-intervention conditions (p<0.05). Thus, a decoction of green betel leaves (Piper betle L.) has been proven effective in reducing symptoms of vaginal discharge in women of reproductive age and has the potential to serve as a safe, simple, and easily applicable non-pharmacological therapeutic alternative.

Abstract

Banana inflorescence contains phytochemicals that may modulate postprandial glucose, but evidence for freshly prepared Kepok banana blossom is limited. This exploratory animal study evaluated the acute antihyperglycemic activity of 40%, 50%, and 60% fresh Kepok banana blossom (Musa paradisiaca L.) preparations using an oral glucose tolerance test. Twenty-five male mice were randomly allocated to distilled-water control, metformin control, or three extract groups (n = 5/group). Following fasting and oral glucose loading, blood glucose was measured before and after loading and at 30, 60, and 120 minutes after intervention. Qualitative screening detected alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, phenolics, and tannins. At 120 minutes, mean glucose levels were 169.0 mg/dL in the negative control, 123.6 mg/dL with metformin, and 121.0, 136.6, and 125.0 mg/dL with the 40%, 50%, and 60% preparations, respectively. Descriptive mean-curve AUC values were 23,457, 18,525, 19,308, 19,650, and 19,740 mg/dL·min. These results suggest that fresh Kepok banana blossom preparations attenuated the acute glucose excursion compared with distilled water. However, the small sample, qualitative-only phytochemistry, nonstandardized dosing, and absence of a chronic diabetes model preclude conclusions about equivalence among concentrations, mechanism, or antidiabetic efficacy
