Abstract

Mathematical connection skills are very important to be developed in students because they can develop new mathematical ideas in solving mathematical problems, can connect mathematical concepts, and can see and relate problems from various different points of view. Facts in the field show that the students' mathematical connection ability is still low. One alternative that is assumed to help improve mathematical connection skills is the application of the Discovery Learning model. The purpose of this study was to determine the improvement of students' mathematical connection abilities after the Discovery Learning model was applied as a whole and based on indicators of mathematical connection ability. The research method used was a quasi-experimental design with a Pretest-Postest Control Group Design with a sample class VIIIA and VIIIB. Class VIIIA as many as 25 students as the experimental class and class VIIIB as many as 23 students as the control class. Data were collected using a mathematical connection ability test which was then analyzed using independent t-test and n-gain. The results of the study were: (1) The improvement of students' mathematical connection ability was better after being taught with the Discovery Learning model; and (2) there was an increase in the students' mathematical connection ability after the application of the Discovery Learning model for each indicator, namely the ability to connect between mathematical concepts increased by 44%; the ability to relate mathematics to other disciplines increased by 28%; and the ability to relate mathematics to everyday life increased by 36%.Keywords: Discovery Learning Model, Mathematical connection ability

Abstract

Learners' anxiety towards mathematics is influenced by the mathematics learning experiences they have received in the past. This study aims to describe the factors of maths anxiety, and how to overcome them based on students' learning outcomes. The subjects of this study were fifth grade students of MIN Aceh Utara based on groups with low, medium, and high learning outcomes. The subject retrieval technique used in this research is purposive sampling and snowball sampling with qualitative research methods with descriptive approaches and data collection techniques with observation, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation and data analysis techniques using Miles Huberman techniques. The results showed that the factors that cause mathematics learning anxiety are internal and external factors in students with low learning outcome categories, namely lack of confidence when working on mathematics problems, not understanding mathematical concepts so that they are anxious during exams, and fear of facing mathematics subjects during offline learning and students with moderate learning outcome categories, namely lack of confidence when working on mathematics problems, lack of understanding of mathematical concepts so that they are anxious during exams, and fear of not being able to solve mathematical problems in front of the class while students with high learning outcome categories are anxious if they don't get good grades, feel uncomfortable if there is a student with a high learning outcome category. Keywords: Maths Learning Anxiety; Factors; Ways to Overcome; MIN students

Abstract

Ethnomathematics is a branch of science that studies the relationship between mathematics and cilture, including traditions, arts and social life. This research aims to reveal the mathematical concepts contained in traditional Dayak clothing, especially in their geometric motifs and patterns. The method used is a qualitative approach with ethnographic analysis of traditional clothing artifacts, interviews with traditional leaders, and literature studies. The research results show that Dayak traditional clothing contains various mathematical concepts, such as symmetry, geometric transformations (rotation, translation, reflection), and fractal patterns. Symmetry is found in the arrangement of the carved motifs, while repetition and fractal patterns can be seen in ornamental details such as the distinctive tendrils of leaves and flowers. This research shows that the cultural heritage of the Dayak tribe not only has aesthetic value, but also educational value which can be developed as contextual mathematics teaching material. It is hoped that these findings will increase understanding of the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and promote the preservation of local culture.

Abstract

The main key in learning mathematics is understanding the concept. If students are going to learn higher concepts, then students must master the concepts that underlie these concepts because mathematical concepts are arranged in a systematic, hierarchical, and real way from simple to complex things. The purpose of this study was to describe the ability to understand the concept of relations and functions based on APOS theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with six research subjects, consisting of grade VIII-A2 UBP students at MTsN 1 Aceh Barat Daya. Subject selection is based on certain student ability criteria, namely 2 students with high abilities, 2 students with moderate abilities, and 2 students with low abilities. The data collection technique used was a concept understanding test sheet and interview guidelines. Data analysis is done by reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that: Subjects with high ability (ST) fulfilled all indicators of concept understanding. Subjects with moderate ability (SS) and subjects with low ability (SR) only have 4 indicators of concept understanding. In indicator (1) the ST subject meets the action stage, while the SS subject and SR subject do not meet the APOS stage. In indicator (2), the ST subject fulfills the process, object and schema stages, the SS subject fulfills the process and object stages, the SR subject only meets the object stage. In indicator (3), the ST subject fulfills the action, process and object stages, the SS subject fulfills the action and process stage, the SS subject fulfills the process and object stage. In indicator (4) the ST subject fulfills the process, object and schema stages, the SS subject and SR subject only fulfills the process stage. In indicator (5) the ST subject meets the process and object stages, the SS and SR subjects only meet the process stage.

Abstract

One of the factors causing the failure to achieve the goals of students' mathematics learning is the discovery of many errors in the results of student work in solving problems, student errors in working on questions can be one of the teacher's instructions to find out the extent to which students master the material. The purpose of this study was to determine student errors in solving algebra  problems  at SMP Negeri 1  Simpang Tiga Aceh  Besar. This  study used a  qualitative approach with the research subject consisting of three students who were taken based on the number of errors made in solving algebraic operations and communication skills. Data were collected through tests and interviews which were then analyzed by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions with the validity of the data by triangulation of sources. The results showed that there were several student errors, such as (1) conceptual errors, student errors in understanding questions  and student  errors in  making  mathematical sentences,  factors  causing errors due to students not understanding the questions given; (2) principle errors, student errors in operating the properties that exist in algebraic operations and wrong in drawing conclusions and determining the final answer, factors that cause errors because students write without being careful in  drawing  conclusions  and  determining  final  answers  and  students  do  not  understand  the properties properties that exist in algebraic operations; and (3) operational errors, errors made by students in using operations or calculations, both addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, factors that cause errors because students are not careful and do not understand the questions given so they do not make good solutions. Keywords: Analysis, Student Error, Algebra Problems.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically review the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in mathematics education. The research employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method by analyzing relevant journal articles and conference proceedings published between 2018 and 2024. The literature search was conducted using several databases, including Google Scholar, ERIC, Semantic Scholar, ResearchGate, and university repositories. The selected studies met predefined inclusion criteria, covering educational levels from elementary school to higher education, and employing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method research designs. The analysis of 18 selected studies indicates that Project-Based Learning is consistently effective in improving mathematics learning outcomes, particularly in terms of academic achievement, conceptual understanding, critical and creative thinking skills, learning motivation, and student engagement. The majority of studies were conducted at the elementary and junior high school levels, with quasi-experimental and experimental designs being the most commonly used. However, several challenges were identified, including time constraints, teacher readiness, and limited learning resources.Overall, Project-Based Learning is recommended as an innovative, student-centered approach to mathematics instruction and is well aligned with the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum. The findings of this review are expected to serve as a reference for educators and researchers in designing more contextual and meaningful mathematics learning strategies.
