Abstract

There was a global pandemic with the emergence of the Covid-19 virus from 2019 until  2022. The pandemic affected all aspects of life, including the press/media world. Media crews had been facing tough challenges during the midst of a pandemic situation. Journalists were required to do work in the field to produce quality content. The business division was required to continue to generate revenue for the company in order to produce quality journalistic works. On the other hand, they had to protect themselves from contracting the plague while carrying out their duties with all the challenges and risks. Since the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, local media revenue has continued to fall. Newspaper sales dwindled, advertising sales slumped, events could not run. While operational costs were not reduced but instead increased. Local media also had to struggle with their own strategies to survive. Abstract

Although it is difficult for the press to move away from many interests, the breath of news should continue to be on a footing of truth and humanity. This breath can guarantee an upright democracy, as one of the functions of the press is the fourth pillar of democracy. However, if the press continues to be in the shadow of certain political parties and candidates, this will alarm the growth and development of a dignified life. The press, which should be a torch of civilization, has instead become a mouthpiece for specific political forces. The power of the press should be for the benefit of life, not just to satisfy the thirst for power seekers.

Abstract

Cases of sexual violence frequently exposed on social media have sparked intense discussions among digital citizens. This phenomenon has given rise to new patterns of participation in the digital public sphere, indicating progress in efficiently and effectively expressing public aspirations through online civic engagement. Thus, online citizen engagement further strengthens the concept of digital citizenship as an active participation form in the digital world. In this study, the topic modeling method is utilized as a machine learning approach with statistical methods to identify topics within large, unstructured document collections. The applied topic modeling method is Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), using data collected from Twitter through crawling big data using the Twitter API. The results of this research reveal the discourse on sexual violence discussed by citizens with seven topics, namely: 1) Indonesia's sexual violence emergency; 2) Support for the enactment of the Draft Law on the Prevention of Sexual Violence, opposing parties against the Draft Law on the Prevention of Sexual Violence; 3) Pros and cons of Minister of Education and Culture and Research and Technology Regulation No. 30 of 2021 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in Higher Education; 4) Sexual violence as sadistic behavior; 5) Sexual violence on campuses and in Islamic boarding schools; 6) Support for Minister of Education and Culture and Research and Technology Regulation No. 30 of 2021 for the prevention and handling of sexual violence on campuses; and 7) Stop sexual violence against children and women. From the analysis of the topic modeling results, it is evident that with a good understanding of citizen engagement facilitated by technology, the younger generation can develop digital citizenship in the practice of online civic engagement.

Abstract

The implementation of Gender Mainstreaming (Pengarusutamaan Gender, PUG) policies in Indonesia has had a problematic impact on the advancement of women's resources. This is due to a discrepancy between the value system from the West (secular) which is the essence of PUG policy and the value system in Indonesian society. This study was conducted to provide an explanation of the impact of PUG policy implementation in producing a transformation of women's gender identities and roles that are becoming more modern towards the phenomenon of gender communication. This study uses critical discourse analysis from Van Dijk which includes 3 (three) dimensions, namely discourse, cognition, and society, with a micro-macro and power analysis approach. This study found that there is a potential for abuse of power in the interpersonal communication practices of men and women. There are 3 things that become factors: the structure of the mind, the structure of the text (conversation), and the meaning of the message. The operation of gender differences in gender communication practices is supported by sources of legitimacy of cultural belief systems and interpretations of religious teachings. Understanding gender differences and how they operate is beneficial in equal and comfortable communication practices. Gender intelligence will form subjectivity based on the meaning of the coherence or togetherness of the relation pair.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated technological transformation in education. Online learning has become a new culture in education that brings significant changes in the intersubjective relationship between educational actors, which was originally full of warmth but has now turned into formality due to distance meetings. This research aims to reveal the ways of relationship that occur between teachers and students and their consequences in online learning practices. The study used a phenomenological approach by collecting data through interviews with 11 teachers and 11 students and observing the online learning process conducted through various applications. The results of the study showed a weakening of the intersubjective relationship between teachers and students. Distance meetings have turned into mere formalities and emptiness. The closeness and warmth between teachers and students are diminishing and filled with emptiness. The interactions that exist are filled with deceit and fraud. In online learning, teachers and students negotiate and compromise on the learning to be conducted amidst all the limitations of distance learning. The consequence is widespread pragmatism towards technology, with students feeling lonely and isolated, and academic dishonesty increasing. In the end, there is a restriction of relationships and a tendency to prioritize mechanisms of silence as a compromise for the loss of true reality in the teacher-student relationship.

Abstract

Data journalism is a new genre in journalism that utilizes data visualization to engage the audience in news reporting. This engagement also provides certainty and minimizes the spread of misinformation regarding the COVID-19 vaccination policy in Indonesia. This study aims to explain how data journalism-based media, which is Katadata.co.id, communicates their news and embodies audience engagement through data visualization. The type of research is content analysis with quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. In quantitative data collection, 49 news titles were searched, which were the results of keyword discovery in January-March 2021 in the “Data Journalism” rubric of Katadata.co.id. The data were coded according to indicators from a multimodal perspective in the concept of ergodic work, which are static information graphs, non-interactive dynamic data visualizations, and interactive dynamic data visualizations. Furthermore, in the qualitative step, the data was analyzed in-depth to explore how Katadata.co.id communicated news about COVID-19 vaccination with the showing and telling models. As a result, the COVID-19 vaccination news on Katadata.co.id also involved the audience in communicating it. In reporting the news, Katadata.co.id uses narrative techniques, which is the instance of narrators technique to characterize the narrative through the presence of news writers, the sequentiality technique to show the movement from one event to another by sliding the pages, the temporal dimension technique to describe the changes over the time with the help of dynamic elements, and tellability techniques to describe the worth-presenting COVID-19 vaccination news.

Abstract

Health communication has become important after two years of the world experiencing Covid 19. The quality of healthy life in the community is important. New media make good information about maintaining health. However, because of the long period of being in normal healthy conditions, many new media accounts provide incorrect health information. The research question is how effective is health communication in the content of its messages in the new media about health in the post-pandemic period against the healthy living attitudes of its followers? The purpose of the study was to find out health communication in the content of its messages in new media about health in the post-pandemic period towards the healthy living attitudes of its followers. The concepts of health communication, healthy living attitudes, and previous research support this research. This research method uses quantitative by distributing questionnaires to respondents. The validity and reliability of the measuring instrument is valid and reliable so that it can be continued to the next statistical analysis. The results of descriptive research are of good value to all dimensions, both health communication variables and attitude variables. The analysis of the next two variables is that both have strong effectiveness. The interplay of both variables is considered strong according to the applicable standards according to some literature. This means that the effect of health communication in new media is effective in influencing the life attitudes of the Indonesian people. So the alternative hypothesis of this study is accepted, and the null hypothesis is rejected. The results of this study are related to previous studies. So that it can be utilized by subsequent research and health communication academics. Research suggestions can be developed from other theoretical perspectives and use other methods to enrich the development of health communication studies.
