Abstract

Analysis of Argumentation in Socio-Scientific Issues of junior High School Students. The 21st Century Education focuses on the development of the competence in creativity, critical-thinking, communication, and collaboration. Based on that reason, the argumentation can be one of the solutions to answer this issue since it facilitates the critical-thinking and communication competences. Arguments can be used in socio-scientific issues that present open problems and debatable. The aims of research is to find out the quality of the argumentation on the socio-scientific issue through the plastic theme of the topic of pollution. Argumentation analysis using TAP (Toulmin's Argument Pattern) consisting of 6 components, namely claims, data, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttals. Based on the results of the research, it was found that the quality of the argumentation in the socio-scientific issues of junior high school students was still low. The low quality of argumentation is caused by the poor of students' concept understanding.

Abstract

Scientific literacy is a central goal of contemporary science education, enabling students to understand scientific concepts, interpret evidence, and apply scientific reasoning to real-world problems. However, many middle school students continue to demonstrate limited scientific literacy due to decontextualized instructional practices. This study investigates the effectiveness of contextual science learning based on coastal environmental issues in enhancing middle school student’s scientific literacy. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was employed involving 120 eighth-grade students from two public middle schools in a coastal region of northern Java, Indonesia. The experimental group received contextualized science instruction integrating authentic coastal phenomena, while the control group received conventional instruction. Scientific literacy was measured using an instrument aligned with the PISA framework. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normalized gain scores, paired-sample t-tests, and ANCOVA. The results indicate that students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher scientific literacy gains than those in the control group (p < 0.01). These findings suggest that contextualizing science instruction through local coastal environmental issues is an effective strategy for fostering scientific literacy and environmental awareness among middle school students.

Abstract

Using the environment as a learning environment has great potential to be developed. Biodiversity in Indonesia, including the slopes of Mount Muria, can be used as a source of learning for student participants. Previous studies' results stated that students' Science Literacy and creative thinking skills on Mount Muria's slopes need improvement. There needs to be learning that can trigger and train students' Science Literacy and creative thinking skills to improve these abilities. The science, technology, religious, engineering, art, and mathematics (STREAM) approach can present more meaningful learning, especially if integrated with project-based learning models and IT. This study aims to develop a digital worksheet titled Kehatimu (Keanekaragaman Hayati Muria) with the PjBL STREAM model to improve students' science literacy and creative thinking skills. The method used is R&D with the define, design, development, and disseminate (4D) model. Data collection involved both test instruments (science literacy and creative thinking assessments) and non-test instruments (feasibility and readability questionnaires, as well as attitudinal scales toward science literacy and garden design creativity assessment rubric). The study involved 135 students from three schools located on the slopes of Mount Muria, divided into experimental and control groups.
