Abstract

This study aims to find out the informal strategy used by the pedicab drivers in Malioboro Street and the implementation of English. The type of this study is a descriptive qualitative in which the data are taken from in-depth interview. This study finds that the pedicab drivers in Malioboro Street commonly use the strategies of informal learning to learn English such as learning independently, memorization and repetition method, and learning everytime and everywhere. There are several factors affecting the success of pedicab drivers in acquiring English such as age, educational background, and motivation. The pedicab drivers use English to communicate with foreign tourist and some of them implement their English not only at the work place but also at home for joke with their family.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse predicate logic realized on Obama’s Speech in University of Indonesia. The source of data is Obama’s speech script. The writers use Aarts theory, descriptive qualitative method, Simak Bebas Libat Cakap, and Teknik Bagi Unsur Langsung. The writers use six steps to analyse the data. The writers download the speech script, divide all the data in speech into clauses, rewrite each clause, identify the parts of the clause in terms of predicate logic, describe the predicate logic in speech, and draw the conclusion. It can be concluded that there are 230 clauses divided in 3 types of predicate logic analysis. They are 105 clauses which belong to one place predicate, 122 clauses which belong to two place predicate, and 3 clauses which belong to three places predicate.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the implementation of active learning and grouping based on student’s skill strategies in Rumah Inggris Pare Van Jogja. This is a descriptive qualitative research where the data are taken from the techniques of data collection namely observation, interview, and documentation. The techniques of data analysis are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The source of data is Rumah Inggris Pare Van Jogja. The writers take full day program in class speaking, vocabulary, pronunciations, grammar, and TOEFL in which the writers only take 20 students. Based on the results of the study, the students can comprehend English speaking, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and TOEFL as a teaching destination for Rumah Inggris Pare Van Jogja. The effectiveness of active learning and grouping based on student’s skill strategies in English is able to help student’s achievement in each English skill. The institution facilities provide the fun places that encourage and assist the use of English teaching strategies. It is concluded that the goal of using English teaching strategies from Rumah Inggris Pare Van Jogja can be achieved.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to increase students' activities and abilities in learning to write procedure texts for English subjects by using a demonstration method for students of class VIII B Kedungbanteng Secondary School 1. This research is motivated by the problem of the low activity of students in learning English and still not achieving classical learning completeness as the analysis of test scores on the ability to write in the initial conditions in the amount of 7 students or 20%, whereas the classical learning completeness criteria which has been determined is 75%. Research efforts to overcome this problem are applying the demonstration method. From the results of the implementation of classroom action research taken place in 2 research cycles, it can be concluded that the average percentage of student activity in the initial conditions is 47.99%, after the research conducted in the first cycle the percentage is 61.71% and in the second cycle it reaches 87.42 %. The ability of students also increases as the analysis of the value of learning outcomes is known in the initial conditions the percentage of classical learning completeness is 58.67%, in the first cycle it is 71.6%, and in the second cycle it reaches 80.8%.

Abstract

The aim of this study is analysing the sense relations realized in the album. In doing this study the writers employ descriptive qualitative method. Meanwhile, the data of this study are taken from the song lyrics of album V (Deluxe Version) by Maroon 5. The writers use sense relations theory of Hurford and Heasley (1986) to identify whether they are synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, homonymy, and polysemy. The result shows that the writers find 34 cases of sense relations in the album. There are 4 types found consisting of 12 cases of synonymy (35,29%), 13 cases of antonymy (38,23%), 6 cases of hyponymy (17,64%), 3 cases of homonymy (8,82%), and 0 case of polysemy (0%). Therefore, the most dominant type of sense relations is antonymy.

Abstract

This research aims to develop make a match learning model with picture card media to improve students' narrative text competencies which are implemented in class IX-B students in the second semester of SMP N 1 Pangkah, Tegal Regency in the academic year 2015/2016. The results show that in the pre-cycle the value of students' learning outcomes in narrative texts is only 15 students from 34 students (44.12%) who are completed with KKM 77, while 19 students have not yet completed (55.88%). In the first cycle the value of student learning narrative texts about fable (animal world story) using make a match learning model with the media card pictures obtains results of 20 students from 34 students (58.82%) completed with KKM 77, while 14 students have not completed (41.18%). In the second cycle the value of student learning narrative text about folktale (folklore) using make a match learning model with the picture card media obtains the results of 27 students from 34 students (79.41%) completed with KKM 77, while only 7 students have not yet completed (20.59%). From these data, it can be concluded that learning to write narrative texts using make a match learning model with picture card media can improve students' motivation and ability to write narrative texts. The achievement of learning can succeed optimally if the teachers are able to apply learning models that are right on target and supported by adequate learning facilities.

Abstract

In this research, the writers discuss semiotic analysis in the word of the main character Louanne Johnson on the “Dangerous Minds” movie. The aims of this research are to find out the context and classification of iconic, indexical and symbolic sign to understand about sign system of meanings. In order to focus on the topic, the writers limit the data, the writers use qualitative-descriptive and Pilah Unsur Penentu (PUP) as the method. The writers use one philosopher’s theories, Charles S. Peirce’s theories to identify the word of the main character Louanne Johnson portrayed in iconic, indexical and symbolic sign. The writers would like to present semiotic analysis which covers iconic, indexical and symbolic sign. The writers analyse of signs system from the script “Dangerous Minds” movie. There are iconic, indexical and symbolic signs. The amounts of the entire word are about 33 word of signs system. The first dominant type of iconic signs gets 19 words. The second dominant type of indexical signs gets 32 words and the last dominant type of symbolic signs which gets 33 words. This data are based on potentially fulfilling words Peirce’s theory.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe English teaching and learning process at Albatross cruise ship hotel school Purwokerto. This is a descriptive qualitative study in which the data are taken from interview, observation, and documentation. The techniques of data analysis are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Based on the result of the study, the study found out that English teaching and learning process at Albatross cruise ship hotel school Purwokerto is effective teaching and learning activity. The students are able to speak English as the teaching goal of Albatross. In the one side, the effectiveness of English teaching and learning process is able to help the students to achieve their future job by mastering English basically and passing the interview test. The facilities provided by the institution are able to encourage and help English teaching and learning process. The result shows that English teaching and learning process at Albatross is student centered. The method and approach used are direct method and communicative approach. English material design fitted to the student’s necessary to get the job at the cruise ship abroad. It is proved by most of the graduations are able to work at the cruise ship abroad and four and five start hotels in Indonesia. No graduations are unemployed after graduating from Albatross Cruise Ship Hotel School Purwokerto. It can be concluded that the goals of English teaching and learning process of Albatross Cruise Ship Hotel School Purwokerto can be achieved. English teaching and learning process of Albatross is to improve speaking skill in English basically.
