Abstract

This study examined prospective science teachers’ teaching skills through peer assessment-based microteaching across two instructional cycles. It addressed the need to systematically develop pedagogical competence in science teacher education. A quantitative descriptive-comparative design involved 18 undergraduate students in a science education program. Teaching performance was assessed using a structured peer observation instrument based on eight basic teaching skills, rated on a 0-5 scale and analyzed through mean score comparison between cycles. The results showed consistent improvement, with the overall mean score increasing from 3,02 (adequate) in Cycle 1 to 4,29 (good) in Cycle 2. The greatest gains were found in explaining skills, classroom management, and teaching small groups and individuals, while questioning skills and guiding small-group discussions improved more moderately. These findings indicate that iterative microteaching practice, peer assessment, and lecturer feedback supported the improvement of teaching skills in prospective teachers. The results highlight the importance of integrating peer assessment with structured instructional support to strengthen observable and procedural teaching skills. However, more complex pedagogical skills still require additional scaffolding and extended practice. This study was limited by its small sample size and descriptive analysis, which may restrict the generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

Higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills are essential requirements for 21st-century learning, yet their implementation in secondary schools remains suboptimal. The design thinking approach has the potential to develop empathy, critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to design solutions through the stages of empathy, definition, ideation, prototype, and testing. This study aims to identify the design thinking ability profile in environmental pollution learning among eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 15 Semarang at each stage. The study used a quantitative descriptive method with a sample of 307 students. Data were collected through multiple-choice tests covering five design thinking indicators, then analyzed using percentages and converted into criterion achievement. The results showed that the define indicator had the highest achievement with a sufficient category, followed by prototype and empathy in the sufficient category. The ideate indicator was in the less category, while the test indicator showed the lowest achievement with a dominance of the very less category. These findings indicate that students' ability to decipher problems is relatively more developed than divergent and evaluative thinking abilities. In general, students' design thinking ability profile still needs strengthening, especially at the ideate and test stages through learning that emphasizes creativity, reflection, and feedback-based iterative processes.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically investigate and scientifically reconstruct the indigenous knowledge, tools, materials, and processes embedded in traditional terites production within Kabupaten Karo into compatible contextual learning content for junior high school science. A qualitative approach with an ethnoscience perspective was employed. Utilizing a purposive sampling technique, data were gathered from six selected participants, comprising three experienced terites producers from Kabanjahe District and three local junior high school science teachers. Data collection involved participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. The findings reveal that terites production follows structured stages, including preparation of tools and ingredients, rumen extraction and filtration, spice grinding and mixing, cooking, and periodic reheating. These stages embody scientific principles such as ruminant digestion, microbial fermentation, filtration, heat transfer, energy transformation, physical changes, diffusion, and the use of natural additives. The process directly aligns with junior high school science competencies, providing a concrete contextual learning resource that connects theoretical knowledge with cultural practices while preserving local heritage. Terites production demonstrates the high utility of integrating indigenous knowledge into science education, thereby enhancing students’ conceptual understanding, engagement, and appreciation of local wisdom through practical and culturally meaningful experiences.
