Abstract

(Title: The Use of Video Broadcast in Teaching Listening-Speaking). The latest technology, which comes like storm, gives us extra help in revealing the unseen that is beyond our reach and touch the untouchable in our hands. The technology gives us potential to do things we haven't been able to do before. One of the greatest challenges to the classrooms of today is mobile technology. As teachers, it's our job to make sure that students who are considered as digital natives learn through the omnipresence of the mainstream media. The world around us is changing in terms of communication and interaction that affect the way people see, think and learn the present environment, and connect with others. In education, we have three options when dealing with these changes: avoid it, struggle with it, or embrace it. It is our duty to prepare and adjust the classroom of today ready for tomorrow. Thus, this writing attempts to review the new trend in technology, the use of video broadcasting in teaching listening-speaking.Keywords: listening-speaking, video broadcasting, media

Abstract

Abstract(Title: Compromising Between the General and Specific in EAP Syllabus Development in Indonesian Context). The quality of a language program is reflected in the syllabus used from which the aim, contents and belief about language instruction are revealed. Syllabuses for English for Academic Purposes in Indonesian universities have been developed, yet they are not quite satisfactory. This article is to explain how to develop a sound syllabus for EAP in Indonesian context, following the steps: context and needs analysis and syllabus planning. Data were collected through triangulated survey employing questionnaires, observation, document study and discussion. Research participants were students, English teachers, and management staff of Yogyakarta State University. Integrated, theme-based syllabus is proposed that includes study skills in higher education as the general theme, which is completed with specific themes related to students' disciplines. This way enables both general and specific skills of EAP to be included in a single syllabus. Keyword: syllabus, language program, English for academic purposes, instruction.

The results of the study showed that the application of the inquiry model was capable of improving the students's French grammar learning, both in the process and the product. The success in the process was indicated by student's activeness in the learning activities for the Grammaire 4 through the inquiry model, and the average attainment in the first cycle was 70.47% and 77.1% in second cycle. The success in product was indicated by improvement of the students'French grammar competence, reflected by the  improvement of average score of post-test. The difference between the  average  score of pre-test and post-test scores was significant because the result of the paired sample t-test both in the first cycle and second one was p (0.001) < 0.05. Keywords: inquiry model, French grammar, action research

Abstract

This study analyzes authors' perception of the Balinese social world, focusing onsocial changes as effects of tourism and modernization. The study employed the qualitativeapproach involving the sociology of literature, especially the sosiology of authors.Berger's social contruction theory was used as a triangulation technique. The study showsthe following findings. First, the Balinese authors subjectively propose a reconstruction ofthe modern Balinese people's way of thinking to face modernization or changingconditions. Second, the Balinese authors are ambiguous people, in the sense that on the onehand they criticize Bali, and on the other hand they love Bali. Third, the Balinese authorsoffer truths that are not dogmatic in nature but derived from daily experiences. Keywords: author plurality, social world, plurality

Abstract

This article is about a socio-pragmatic study on the language used by theJavanese society which has some speech levels (or unggah-ungguh in Javanese)called ngoko, krama madya, and krama inggil and the language used by the Bataksociety which does not have such speech levels. The difference concerning speech levels between the two societies isinfluenced by their traditional ways of living. The traditional Javanese society isdivided into two levels: the priyayi (or the nobility) and wong cilik (or thecommoner) levels. A priyayi uses ngoko in communicating with a wong cilik butthe latter cannot use it in communicating with the former. In such a case, the wongcilik uses krama inggil. This seems to indicate that solidarity in the Javanesesociety is poor. On the other hand, the Batak society does not have such levels sothat there are no speech levels in its language. Though the Batak society has manymargas, which means that any members of the society having the same last namebelong to the same marga and are regarded as members of the same family (therelevant term is dongan sabutuha), they are obliged to help other people who donot belong to their marga because the philosophy of the Batak society is dalihan natolu, which explains that solidarity in the Batak society is very important. Keywords: socio-pragmatic, ways of living, speech levels, solidarity
