Abstract

The study is a critical discourse analysis (CDA) on the media critiques on the implementation of the Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE) program. The study is aimed at describing the socio-cultural practices of the news items in the mass media about the MIFEE program. The sociocultural practice analysis is a CDA in the macro level, which is related to contexts outside the texts. Contexts, in this case, include situational contexts, i.e. related to a specific society, culture, or polity. The study is qualitative research; data sources are news items about critiques to the MIFEE; data collection is done by the listening and note taking technique; and data analyses are done by the pragmatic equivalence method. The study is backed by content and semantic data validities. Reliability of the study is assessed by intra- and inter-rater reliability techniques. Findings show that criticques to the MIFEE program can be described under five categories, namely: 1) critiques on the disruption of the forest ecosystem, 2) critiques on the system of the local food, 3) critiques on the violation of human rights, 4) critiques on land forfeiture, and 5) critiques on the failure of  the MIFFE program. Keywords: MIFEE, critical discourse analysis (CDA), food resilience and self-provision, indigeneous culture

Abstract

Research on identity status in literary works has not been in-depth exploration. Those researches discussed the identity status in general and were still very limited in literary study. Therefore, this study explores one of the identity statuses in detail using Kroger's (2005) achieved identity characteristics consisting of three domains; the personality variable, cognitive process and interpersonal relationship. Each domain has achieved identity features. This research is a documentary. The procedures were reading the script repeatedly; identifying the main character's actions, thoughts, reflections, thoughts, feelings, and desires; coding, classifying, analyzing and interpreting the data. The results indicated that Moana's personality, cognitive process, and interpersonal relationships proved that Moana's achieved identity in the three domains is well built. She has most of the features of achieved identity. This study also proved that identity status can be explored in fictional characters. Therefore, future research can explore this identity or other identity statuses in depth. Parents or schools can use movies with characters with this identity to help children develop their identity status to the highest, achieved identity. Keywords: Achieved identity, identity status, movie

Abstract

Writing is a big problem for law students because of the lack of grammar mastery, limited interactions during the pandemic, and lack of motivation. This study aims to fill the need for investigations about social and affective strategies, part of grammar learning strategies, in writing opinion texts by law students during the pandemic. This study used a mix-method. The respondents were 245 first-year law students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Data collection used inventory and open-ended questions. The results showed that the affective strategy average was 3.30 (medium), while the social strategy was 3.50 (high). The correlation between all social and affective strategies tends to be high, 0.73990. However, the correlation of each strategy in it varies, ranging from very weak to very strong. Even though there are limited interactions, they still use social strategies to overcome the problems of implementing grammar in writing. The dominant social strategy is using corrective feedback on writing by lecturers and other students and learning from people who are more proficient in grammar. On the other hand, the significant affective strategy was trying to relax when having problems understanding grammar and motivating to master grammar. These findings have pedagogical implications for grammar learning strategies in writing to law. Keywords: affective strategies, grammar learning strategies, social strategies, law, writing of opinion text

Abstract

The present content analysis study intended to investigate the cultural contents of an international EYL textbook used in Indonesian private elementary schools. It examined the representation of cultural themes categorized under the big "C" and small "c" cultures and the representation of EFL context-based/Indonesian cultures in each theme. The findings of the study revealed that (1) the book covered all themes, but their representation is not balanced; (2) some aspects of local cultures were represented in the books, but the number was very limited and less varied. The implication of this study suggests that the international EYL textbook should allocate adequate space for local culture. Hence, this could be seen as an opportunity for EYL teachers and practitioners to use their authority and to empower themselves by providing supplementary materials that best suit their local needs. Keywords: culture, themes, local, representation, international, EYL textbook

Abstract

Serial verb constructions are grammatical constructions that are still debatable by linguists from different schools of theories because of whether they are considered as simple or complex predicates in terms of their various structures found in world's languages. Creol languages such as Papuan Malay has serial verb constructions interested for further studies because there are lacks of similar studies done in the language. This research describes serial verb constructions in Papuan Malay. Its focus is to investigate syntactic and semantic structures of serial verb constructions. In the research, the descriptive linguistic method is used and its approach is the typological analysis where it focuses on analyzing particular linguistic features, i.e. serial verb constructions. The elicitation technique is used to collect data and it is also beneficial to supplement the syntagmatic analysis when the data is analysed in linear/horizontal order to easily look for the syntactic structure, argument structure, and argument sharing of serial verb constructions. The results show that serial verb constructions in Papuan Malay has two types, i.e. Dependent and Co-dependent serializations. Both types are categorized based on their argument structure and argument sharing properties, as well as their semantic expressions. Further, they are categorized as serial verb constructions by the definition of sequence of events within a monoclausality as the main feature of serial verb constructions in Papuan Malay. This paper gives a contribution to the theory of syntax and typology about the structural and semantic expressions of the serial verb constructions by reflecting the serial verb constructions in Papuan Malay. Keywords: Papuan Malay, Serial verb constructions, dependent serialization, co-dependent serialization, monoclausality

Abstract

In the life circle, humans always produce, receive, and search for the meaning of signs. The meanings have ultimate value concerning Islamic worldview which then determines human salvation. Therefore, these issues are very important to research. The researchers worked in a deductive-inductive approach: a quasi-qualitative method characterized by the use of theories to be reconstructed after critical dialogues aimed at revealing the meanings of the natural signs based on an Islamic worldview and proposing a model of the Islamic theory of sign. The subject of this research is the books of Risale-i Nur as the representation of the Islamic worldview. Further, the techniques of the data collection are (1) preparing the domain (2) constituting the taxonomy of the data; (3) note-taking in the text of the Risale-i Nur. Furthermore, the latent content analysis was employed. The researchers categorized qualitative textual data into clusters of similar entities, or conceptual categories, to identify consistent patterns and relationships between themes. Finally, the researchers concluded that the meanings of the natural signs in the Risale-i Nur are the manifestation of the perfection of God's Names. Moreover, the significant contribution of the Risale-i Nur to Islamic semiotics is revealed and proposed.

Abstract

Teaching English for Specific Purposes in the age of technological innovation necessitates a new strategy for communicative contexts that incorporates technology into the teaching and learning process. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach is considered a suitable approach in which students not only understand the content and context of situations that are practiced following the actual conditions in the industry but are also expected to be fluent in two-way communication. This study aims to develop an LMS-based communicative teaching material with the CLIL approach. Using the Research and Development method by applying the ADDIE model, 60 students were involved as the research subject, two lecturers were observed and interviewed, and three expert judges evaluated the quality of the communicative LMS-based materials developed. The results show that the developed materials were of excellent quality, with a mean score of 4.98 from the three expert judges, and the students have perfect perceptions towards both the LMS's features in English learning materials and the use of the CLIL approach in English learning materials. Pedagogically, it is advised that if internet access is unavailable, the lecturers figure out a means to get over last-minute obstacles.

Abstract

Fictional movies captivated the audience in many ways through their stories and audio-visual. The stories of fictional movies often reflect what happens to our society, and we savor the purification of the hero's tragic flaw. One of which is power relations between males and females. This study explores women's empowerment in Oshin the movie (2013). The narrative is about a seven-year-old girl called Oshin, who is made to work as a maid by her father due to the family's poverty. At first, she is against her father's idea of being separated from her family. She struggles to become a maid until she is accused of stealing and runs away. By watching her mother's efforts as the household pillar, she finally realizes the importance of being an independent female. The movie shows power relations issues regarding filial duty and social stratification. Yet, with the help of Foucault's theory of The Subject and Power (1982), power resistance is a more eloquent outcome to discuss. Thus, this study proposes the stages of power resistance and how the protagonist declares her resilience through traditional gender roles. Moreover, this study uses an interpretative method by scrutinizing each scene that shows power resistance; the discussion reveals that Oshin participates in staging power resistance for women's economic empowerment, which subsequently contributes to her family's economic development. This study concludes that financial independence and women's empowerment are inextricably linked.

Abstract

Rooted within structures of patriarchy and modern life, gender equality seems still far from achieved. Providing social issues like gender inequality, literary works become reliable proof to portray subordination or discrimination against women. Thus, this study aspires to strive for women empowerment and re-educating men expectantly to tackle the problems of gender inequality. Desy Anwar's Growing Pains is interlaced with gender issues in five chapters. This research aims to unveil a range of gender conflicts and the efforts of the female main characters to overcome the hardships in life. Descriptive criticism is employed as a method of analysis. Following Lazar's Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (2014), the linguistic data in the form of lexical choices, phrases, and clauses are first identified based on the language features indicating gender inequality or violence. Eckert and McConnell-Ginet's language theory (2013) is applied in unraveling the details of linguistic evidence. Then, interpreting the discursive logic is correlated with the cultural realm of the novel Hence, the findings yield that all the selected lexicons, phrases, and clauses of the novel construct the meanings of gender issues. Socio-cultural experiences represent forms of gender-based violence such as asymmetrical family systems, misogynistic practices, gender-identity threatening, deviant female promiscuity, and cruel motherhood portrayal. The symbolic and psychological impacts are also identified, referring to post-patriarchal regimes. Although there seems to be effortful survival in masculine domination, both internal and external factors are in support of constructed gender inequalities. Eventually, all the female characters are demonstrated as the vulnerably subordinated subjects of neoliberal hegemony. This research fervently aims to recall the awareness of symbolic gender violence due to ongoing powers that halt the emergence of gender equality and reshape it into hegemonic strategies. Keywords: hegemony, inequality, misogyny, patriarchy, symbolic violence
