Abstract

This article aims to contextualize LGBT-related hadiths from humanitarian, religious, and cultural perspectives. LGBT issues have become a complex debate in Indonesian society in recent years, especially as they are closely related to existing religious and cultural values. The purpose of this study is to analyze how LGBT-related hadiths are interpreted and applied in the Indonesian context, and how humanitarian, religious, and cultural perspectives play a role in this understanding. The study uses a qualitative approach by collecting and analyzing data from primary and secondary sources, including hadith texts, religious literature, and the opinions of religious and community leaders. The results of the analysis show that interpretations of hadith-reports on LGBT may vary depending on the religious, cultural, and humanitarian frameworks used. Some may use the hadith to oppose LGBT based on traditional interpretations, while others argue that humanitarian principles and social values should be prioritized. This study also examines the impact of contextualizing hadith about LGBT on religious, cultural and humanitarian views. It was found that the diversity of views in society on this issue reflects the conflict between religious values and the demands of a more inclusive humanity. This research illustrates the complexity of the context in interpreting and applying hadith traditions on LGBT in Indonesia. Differences between religious, cultural and humanitarian interpretations play an important role in shaping discussions and policies on this issue. Therefore, it is important to continue to promote inclusive dialogue and understanding in order to deal with LGBT issues wisely and with respect for different perspectives

Abstract

This study aims to explain further the cosmological argument of Hamzah Fansuri. This research is library research using a historical approach to obtain data and conduct content analysis. According to Hamzah Fansuri, every single thing in this world that either can or cannot be seen can be pictured as a circle or curvature, the two corners of which can meet each other. Half of the curvature is “the down way curvature” (tanazzul) that is the way of the creation of the universe and its content; the manifestation process from the Oneness or the Higher Existence (Who cannot be known physically) to become many existence or the reality that can be seen physically. The other curvature is “the up-way curvature” (taraqqī), which is a way of creation from physical to metaphysical existence. The entire levels or structure of being are summarized in the person and the human being’s existence as a perfect creature of physical and spiritual quality. Therefore, the universe can only be returned to the One through humans. The concept of cosmology in the Fansuri’s thought is to show the unity and interrelationship of all existence that leads to divine oneness.

Abstract

This article concludes that the interpretation of the Quran depends on the ideological and theological leanings of a mufassir. The findings support H-G. Gadamer’s claim about the mufassir’s pre-understanding, which is considered to have a close relationship with the interpretation result. This study shares the view of modernist Muslims, such as Naṣr Ḥāmid Abū Zayd, Farid Esack, Khaled Abou el-Faḍl, and feminist scholar Amina Wadud, that subjectivity in the interpretation of the Quran is inevitable because each mufassir lives in a different historical context and cultural reality. This article proves that the theological interpretation in al-Kashshāf is influenced by the Muʿtazilah principles of al-tawḥīd and al-ʿadl. The methodology of interpretation also portrays al-Zamakhsharī as an interpreter who has full authority in expressing his thoughts by using the question-and-answer method in his work. This article concludes that the interpretation of the Quran depends on the ideological and theological tendencies of the mufassir.

Abstract

The Discourse about humans to this day continues to be actual and contextual and has always been an important issue. The question of who, what, and where humans are is still a matter of debate among scientists, philosophers, and theologians. In general, among philosophers, scientists, and theologians, humans are understood in three ways: First, the group that holds that humans are only material that occupies space, can be seen, touched, measured, counted, and so on. The second group is having a view that human nature is only the spirit. While the third group has a view that humans are made up of matter and spirit perfectly and simultaneously or consist of body and spirit (soul). This paper describes the thoughts of a Muslim philosopher, al-Farabī about humans. Al-Farabī is a Muslim philosopher who is known as al-Muʿallim al-Thānī (Second Teacher) after Aristotle who was nicknamed al-Muʿallim al-Awwal (First Teacher). An honorary title was given to him for his ability to review the thoughts of Greek philosophers, especially Aristotle. Humans according to Al-Farabī are two-dimensional beings. The physical dimension is in the form of a material body and the spiritual dimension consists of the soul (al-nafs) and spirit (al-rūḥ).

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is neither a religious state nor a secular state though the majority of its population is Moslem. The relations between Islam and the state have once experienced strong tensions until it finally reached a consensus. However, this consensus had historically experienced distortions and complexities among Moslems themselves and between the Moslems and the government (state), during the New Order Era and the Reform Era. This article tries to describe the development of the idea of religious moderation in the New Order and the Reform Era and explore the views of the Moslem elites in relation to religious moderation policies and their implementation during the era of President Soeharto and in the era of open democracy after the fall of the authoritarian New Order regime. This research relies on an in-depth analysis of academic references and literature. The study shows that there are differences in the aspects of thinking and configuration of Moslem actors in relation to the policy and implementation of religious moderation in the two eras. The research showed that the efforts of the majority of religious people in Indonesia in campaigning for religious moderation intellectually, culturally, and politically by any means, models, modifications and different actors according to the context, challenges, and the spirit of the times had never been faded away so it can not be extinguished.

Abstract

This paper intends to strengthen the view that Islam vernacularizing happened in the sharḥ of ḥadīth that provided new distinctions in the meaning of the Prophet’s Ḥadīths. Baḥr al-Madhī Syarah Bagi Mukhtaṣar Saḥīḥ al-Tirmidhī written by Muhammad Idris al-Marbawi (1896-1989) provided quite copious data on this matter. Instead of obscuring the Prophet’s ḥadīths, the subjectivity, and locality of al-Marbawi as a Nusantara Muslim scholar enriches the contextualization of the meaning of ḥadīth so that the non-Arab communities can understand the ḥadīths well. The abundant textual data in Baḥr al-Madhī also confirmed that the study of Nusantara ḥadīths had been established in the 19th and 20th centuries AD. This paper strengthened Oman Fathurrahman’s thesis which showed that the roots of the Nusantara ḥadīths writing tradition have existed since the 17th century. On the other hand, this paper refuted several academics’ opinions such as Brown (1966) and Azra (1997) who said that the study of ḥadīths was stagnant.

Abstract

Islamic modernism emerged in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a response to global challenges, aiming to blend Islamic values with modern elements like science and technology. It spread globally in response to colonialism and modernization. In Indonesia, it developed during the transition to democracy, with regional autonomy leading to the implementation of Sharia in local regulations. Some radical groups in Indonesia sought to establish a strict Islamic state, driven by motives like the desire for a caliphate. In response, a liberal Islamic movement emphasizing contextual interpretations emerged. Islam Nusantara, represented by NU, exemplifies a moderate and tolerant form of Islam. Religious moderation is seen as an alternative to balance extreme interpretations, focusing on tolerance, democracy, and the rejection of violence. This article will delve into the journey of Islamic modernism, starting from its pioneers in Egypt and extending to Indonesia, where debates and developments in religious thought have become significant stages
