Abstract

PurposeThis study aimed to investigate the depiction of Vladimir Putin’s Power and Dominance in political cartoons collected from usnews.com, and identified the social contexts underlying the creation of those political cartoons. MethodThis research used qualitative methods which engaged in discovering and uncovering the meaning of a particular phenomenon. The sample data was three political cartoons related to the Russia-Ukraine War taken from usnews.com. It employed Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) approach of Visual Grammar from Kress & Leeuwen (2006) to examine the visual mode, and Systemic Functional Grammar theory from Halliday & Matthiessen (2014) to analyze the verbal modes. Results/findingsThe findings showed that Vladimir Putin in political cartoons was represented as a negative powerful figure through the dominant use of the narrative process. Whilst the images of Putin as a ruthless and dictator figure were revealed in the verbal modes through the use of material, relational, and mental process. Each political cartoon's social context connects the visual and verbal modes while providing clearer information about the reason for cartoonists created these political cartoons. The partiality of the American cartoonists to the United States and Western countries also revealed through the political cartoons that worked as a medium to convey the cartoonists’ thoughts, showing that they fought against the invasion. ConclusionThrough visual and verbal analysis, the cartoonist constructed a negative portrayal of Vladimir Putin as a dictatorial leader. However, this study has limitations in its scope since it does not deeply address potential variations in viewer or audience’s interpretation based on individual backgrounds and experiences. Therefore, future researchers are encouraged to expand upon this study by exploring the production and consumption of similar texts, which may offer diverse or multiple perspectives on the subject.

Abstract

PurposeThe way to produce an equivalent translation text appears hard that every translation work should engage with diverse language and cultural systems. The issues are expected to affect both translation students and professional translators. Therefore, this current work aims to discover in-depth information about translation equivalence degrees among Indonesian EFL undergraduate students.MethodThis study employed qualitative content analysis. The research data included documentation of the translation texts from English into the Indonesian language, which resulted in 22 students majoring in English education at a public university in Banten Province, Indonesia. The source language texts were derived from the news-item texts published in national newspapers. The data analysis procedure comprised comparing the two texts, classifying, discussing, drawing conclusions, and making interpretations. Results/findingsThe study of the translation texts revealed that 11 texts (50%) referred to near-optimal translation, six texts (27%) to partial translation, and five texts (23%) to poor translation.ConclusionGiven that none of the students' translation outputs achieved the optimal equivalency; this conclusion suggests that students' translation knowledge and skills still need to be improved by regular practice and discussion at each translation course meeting.

Abstract

PurposeLinguistics landscape (LL) is not only a means of showing the identity of a language but also a constructive effort to fight for justice for society. Landscape in this study is a form of protest against security forces for the loss of life of 135 Aremania fans after watching a soccer match between Arema and Persebaya at the Kanjuruan stadium. This research aims, apart from mapping all signs from aspects of language use patterns, also to conduct a critical analysis of the language used. MethodThis study uses quantitative and qualitative methods based on documentation in the form of billboards, boards, and banners installed in various parts of Malang, Indonesia. Content analysis and critical analysis are used to analyze this research. Results/findingsThe findings of this study show that the language used in the landscape has two forms, monolingual and bilingual. In addition, it indicates that four languages are used in the sign. Indonesian has a higher quantity than English, Javanese, and Arabic.  ConclusionThe language pattern used in the landscape tends to reflect sarcasm, cynicism, and rhetoric. This research suggests conducting a follow-up study that examines the same sign in the broader area, including Malang district and East Java region, to obtain varied data and various sign patterns. Thus the data information obtained is more comprehensive.

Abstract

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to analyze the dynamics of Lampung's pepper trade in regional and international networks in the 16th to 18th centuries with three focuses: Lampung's position in the Nusantara shipping routes, the pepper production system in Lampung, and Lampung's pepper trade network. MethodThis study used the historical method, which consists of four stages: heuristics (collecting historical sources), external and internal source criticism, interpretation, and historiography (writing history). The data sources used were local and foreign sources to explain the focus of the study. Results/FindingsThe results found that Lampung had an important role in developing the maritime trade network due to its strategic location on the Nusantara shipping route, especially after the Portuguese controlled the port of Malacca in 1511. Following this situation, Banten became a major international pepper port city in the Sunda Strait. The primary source of pepper was from Lampung. This activity formed four trade networks between Lampung and Banten, Palembang, Batavia (Netherlands) and Bengkulu (UK). Before the second half of the 17th century, the network was stronger with Banten and Palembang, but afterward, it shifted under the influence of Batavia and Bengkulu. All parties used all possible ways to get the Lampung pepper.   ConclusionThis study shows that Lampung pepper was a significant factor driving Lampung's history and contribution to regional and international trade networks over two centuries.

Abstract

PurposeThis research aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the Islamic outreach efforts of Muhammadiyah, one of Indonesia's largest Islamic organizations, as documented in the magazine Bintang Islam during the years 1924-1927.    MethodThe study employs a historical method comprising four stages: heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography.  Primary sources primarily include issues of Bintang Islam from 1924-1927, supported by relevant secondary sources such as books and journals.  These sources were critically examined for authenticity, interpreted, and then synthesized into a historical reconstruction during the historiographical phase. The analysis integrates approaches from sociology of mass communication and hermeneutics, emphasizing an analytical-descriptive framework.   FindingsThe findings reveal that Bintang Islam, founded by Muhammadiyah, served as a representation of Islamic press.  Its establishment signified the continuity of modernism influenced by the Dutch East Indies and the impact of Islamic ideologies introduced by pilgrims, scholars, and the reformist ideas of Jamaluddin Al-Afghani, Muhammad Abduh, and Rashid Rida. Within Bintang Islam, Muhammadiyah figures articulated their da’wa thoughts, including efforts to counter Christianization, advocacy for renewal (tajdid), enjoining good and forbidding evil (amar ma'ruf nahi munkar), and excerpts on international da’wa activities.   Conclusion  In conclusion, Muhammadiyah's da’wah through Bintang Islam represents its response to widespread evangelization efforts, particularly in Java, addressing the decline in Muslim practices due to superstitions, innovations, and un-Islamic practices. It also served as a catalyst for enhancing religious, social, economic, and political awareness.

Abstract

PurposeThis research aimed to reveal the integrity of Utsman bin Affan and the authenticity of the Qur'an by the three parameters of integrity: Honesty, Consistency, and Courage, and three parameters of authenticity: Continuity, credibility, and symbolism. It also involved the criticism study of Theodor Noldeke’s View about the codification of The Qur’an. MethodThis research employed a qualitative library approach to analyze Theodor Noldeke's views on the codification of the Qur'an. The analysis method consists of two steps: first, a descriptive analysis of Noldeke's intellectual background and the concepts of integrity and authenticity; second, a comparative analysis of the codification of the Qur'an from the perspectives of Muslim and Western scholars. Results/findingsThere were integrity factors in Utsman bin Affan, namely honesty and trustworthiness in behaviour, consistency in action, and courage and responsibility in making decisions. Utsman bin Affan was a caliph with integrity, so all the policies he issued towards the codification of the Qur'an guaranteed authenticity. ConclusionAlthough Theodor Noldeke argued that the Qur'an codification policy of Utsman bin Affan was inauthentic and has many problems with it, this statement was considered incorrect due to differences in research methods used, as well as differences in the history of the Qur'an and the Bible.
