Abstract

This article will try to show that Hatta was consistently a religious nationalist, but one who also rejected the idea of an Islamic state. Born in a devout Muslim family, Hatta grew and had always been a devout Muslim in his entire life. But his being a devout Muslim had never been a problem for him to be an astute proponent of Indonesian nationalism. If anything, it even encouraged his nationalist stand. When Indonesia's independence was still in its early stage of preparation in the 1940s, he made it clear that he accepted Pancasila as the basis of the future state, particularly when the "Belief in God" was finally put as the first principle of this state's basis.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v9i2.667

Abstract

Some Indonesian archaeologists, however, have focused on the nation's Islamic past. Uka Tjandrasasmita is one of Indonesia's leading archaeologists and is largely behind the writing of Volume III of the Sejarah Nasional Indonesia, the national history that was the "standard text" for the teaching of history in Indonesian schools during the New Order; the volume he worked on dealt with Indonesia's Islamic history. For many years he held the position of the head of the Islamic Antiquities section of the Indonesian Archaeological Service (Bidang Arkeologi Islam, Pusat Penelitian Kepurbakalaan dan Peninggalan Nasional) and carried out survey and excavation work in West, Central and East java. He has published many reports on the Islamic archaeology of Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i2.530

Abstract

Observers of Islam and Muslim politics in Indonesia over the past year could not fail to note the explosion of political parties bearing the banner of Islam as well as the reemergence of a discourse on a "political Islam" and the specter of an Islamic state that became a subject of anxiety among some and enthusiasm among others. This was hardly a new issue-Indonesians have struggled since even before the formation of their state to negotiate the relationship between Islam and the state. Indonesia's founding fathers, upon developing its Constitution, were mired in the debate over the role of Islam and the syari'ah in their new nation. This issue raised its head time and time again at key points during the Soekarno regime-as discussed below. Soeharto artificially muted the potential political role of Islam through enforcement of asas tunggal Pancasila and careful balancing of Islam with the military. Almost immediately after Soeharto fell, however, there was an explosion of political parties bearing the banner of Islam, and the discourse on the shape of the new Indonesian political system was dominated by the debate over the role of Islam.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v7i2.709

Abstract

Formichi, Kiara, Islam in The Making of The Nation: Kartosuwiryo and Political Islam in 20th Century Indonesia. Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, 282, Leiden: KITLV Press, 2012, xvii, 244 pp. (map), USD 49.00, paper, ISBN 978-90-6718-386-4Chiara Formichi’s book, Islam and the Making of the Nation: Kartosuwiryo and Political Islam in 20th Century Indonesia (2012), is the most recent work on Kartosuwiryo and Negara Islam Indonesia (NII). Formichi perceives Kartosuwiryo and NII as Islamic political movement while discussing the place of Islam and Indonesian Muslims in the nation-state building. She argues that Kartosuwiryo movement and NII is the true expression of political Islam which aims at establishing ‘a federal Islamic state of Indonesia’ by collapsing the Indonesian state with Pancasila as its philosophical foundation. In her opinion, the roots of NII’s political Islam could be traced to the works and political activism of Kartosuwiryo in Sarekat Islam (SI), the first Islamic national movement in Indonesia, established in 1911. However, Formichi does not explain why the ideas, movement, struggle as well as the trial of establishing an Islamic state in Indonesia failed as confirmed by the experience of Kartosuwiryo and NII.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v21i1.883

Abstract

The diversification of religious authority in Indonesia reflects not only the variety of Islamic orientation of religious communities in Indonesia but also shows the inability of the old religious authority to respond the increasing problems that the Indonesian Muslims communities have to deal with. Radical Muslims including Imam Samudra clearly does not show any respect to scholars/ulama such as the NU ulama, because, to him, they are unable to properly respond the suffering of the Muslims community in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. To him, the only authoritative ulama, whom Muslims should follow, are the ulama in the frontier (ulama mujahid).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i1.580

Abstract

This article tries to portray the development of religious orientation in schools through a thorough investigation of the emergence of ROHIS in senior high schools and perusing its dynamics. After having been introduced in the mid-1980s, ROHIS has attracted many people. In the beginning it merely supported religious activities in schools, but gradually its importance became undeniable. Its significant contributions in endowing students with additional religious knowledge made ROHIS a well-recognized organization amongst students and teachers.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v17i1.470
