Abstract

This study is about the concept of sexuality in the Qur‘an and Hadith. The concept of sexuality is one of the topics rarely discussed by Muslims. Topics on sexuality are sill regarded as dirty and taboo. Sexulaity is merely seen among the majority of society as a sexual intercourse between man and woman. This article seeks to uncover the concept of sexuality in al-Qur‘an and Hadith by examining some Quranic terms and concepts and linking those terms/concepts. This research utilizes content analysis and proportional analysis units. The author argues that the concepts of sexuality in Islamic literature is not a taboo given that al-Qur‘an and Hadith mentioned and discussed sexuality from various aspects, including physi- ological and psichological aspects

Abstract

Abstract

Muhammadiyah, one of the largest Islamic movement, has gone beyond a century, and it remains continuously in upholding the ideals of establishing “the truly Islamic society”. What is the Muhammadiyah spirit of sustainability in ad- dressing the challenges of the times? Through library approach, this study finds that the Muhammadiyah movement always loyal to and take inspiration from the three ethos of the Quran in achieving the goal of building a truly Islamic society, those are the ethos of rahmah (compassion), al-Ma’un and al-`Ashr. That ethos has been always established on integrative-interconnective approach between the in- terpretation of the Quran, the sacred heart-mind and the findings of science and technology, and the universal experience of humanity. Rationality is a key of developing the sacred heart-mind capabilities, in addition to experiencing of many nationalities and faiths. From here we know about how to save the lives of people in the world based on the ethos of rahmah. Human happiness is consisting of sincerity, remembering to death, and put science as the key to progress together. Muhammadiyah is also identical with the ethos of al-Ma`un, the religious worth of social praxis. Religiosity tends to reject the formalities of religion for it has been included in the social alignments to advocate the weaks. Al-`Ashr ethos means that religion (iman) and civilization (`amal shalih) are placed as two sepa- rate entities and should be achieved separately. Religion as symbolic formalities is to be important here. Civilization is built through a process of “learning and experiment” and persistency to defeat yourself. Last but not least, Muhammadiyah is no longer overly concerned with the poverty issue, but also regarded to the effective systems and institutions under the effective leadership in building al- hadarah al-fadhilah.

Fire occurred when Muslim performing Ied Fitri prayer in an open space. The case seemed to be a climax of previous events: 1) Gereja Injili di Indonesia (GIDI/ Indonesian Evangelical Church) held an international seminar involving people from all over the world, on the day of Ied Fitri. Moreover, GIDI released a notice banning Muslim from performing Ied Prayer, 2) the committee of KKR some-how felt irritated with Muslims’ activity during Ied celebration since early in the morning, 3) state apparatus were not prepared for the conflict. Early warning system needs to be developed to prevent such conflict re-occur in this country. The cause of conflict should be settled such as based on the finding of the Fact Finding Team of the Muslims Committee for Tolikara (Komat): the criminals should be brought to the court; the notice released by GIDI should be evaluated; Interreligious forum (FKUB) should be balanced between all religious beliefs; local regulation on the banning of building a place of worship other than GIDI’s church must be evaluated.

Abstract

This article confirms that the decision of Nahdlatul Wathan organization not to engage in the field of practical politics cannot be separated from the fact that a number of the organization’s members do the opposite. Hence, such contradic-tion may lead to a conflict of interest between the organization’s missions, which are to solely focus on three main domains of activities: education, social transfor-mation, and dakwah islamiyah, with a number of practically engaging members in politics who may take advantage of their Nahdlatul Wathan organizational posi-tion to raise voters. Apart from their mission statement, Nahdlatul Wathan al-ways takes a strategic position in the political culture of West Nusa Tenggara. This can be observed from three aspects: (1) the supported political party, (2) the owned social capital and (3) the massive organization’s role. Based on these three aspects, the Nahdlatul Wathan and a number of its members always participate in assuming legislative and executive powers.
