Abstract

Cocoa swollen shoot virus disease (CSSVD) has severely hampered the production of cocoa in Ghana since pre-colonial days. The Ghana Cocoa Board has put several measures in place to support cocoa farmers in the fight against the CSSVD. This present study captures how the CSSVD affects cocoa farmers and the support systems for such situations. Using a survey design, the study employed the multi-stage sampling technique to select 413 cocoa farmers. A structured questionnaire was used to seek information from the cocoa farmers. A multiple linear regression model was estimated to analyse the data. The CSSVD affects the living standards of cocoa farmers through their economic wellbeing, thus, household income and assets accumulation. The social wellbeing of farmers is also affected by the CSSVD through their socio-cultural (participation in cooperatives and communal activities) and educational activities (participation in extension education activities). The implication is that the current support systems given to cocoa farmers after being affected by the CSSVD need to be strengthened, enhanced and made holistic to cover their economic and social wellbeing. Economic and social interventions aimed at increasing the resilience of cocoa farmers in the face of the CSSVD will be helpful in this direction.

Abstract

This study intends to enhance the process of agribusiness in tobacco in Indonesia starting from decision-making to selecting tobacco seeds (superior and non-superior) until the final result of agribusiness in tobacco. This research analyzes the total costs required in the process of tobacco cultivation until the selling through tobacco collectors. The methods used are interviews and observations of 10 tobacco farmers in Kapencar village of Wonosobo regency as well as 2 tobacco collectors. The researcher conducts interviews with 5 farmers who use superior seeds and the rest who do not. The findings of this study show that the use of superior seeds results in lower cost and the profit of superior seeds is higher than that of non-superior seeds. The use of superior seeds is able to improve the quality of tobacco produced by farmers, as well as the quality of tobacco in Indonesia.

Abstract

Agriculture as the second largest supporting sector in the Indonesian economy has functioned as a provider of food, a provider of employment, and a source of community income. The need for staple food, especially rice, continues to increase along with the increase in population. The high conversion of agricultural land has become a threat to food security in Tangerang Regency. The strategy that needs to be carried out by the government is the availability of production land and the welfare of rice farmers. Farmer's Exchange Rate is an indicator used to measure farmers' welfare. This study aims to analyze rice farmers’ exchange rate and the effect of variables on land area, productivity, rice prices, fertilizer prices, and pesticide prices on the welfare of rice farmers in the Tangerang Regency. The research method used is Farmer's Exchange Rate Analysis and Multiple Linear Regression. Farmer's Exchange Rate is the ratio of the price of Laspeyers or the comparison of the price index received by farmers with the price index issued by farmers. Multiple Linear Regression to determine the effect of variables on land area, productivity, rice prices, fertilizer prices, and pesticide prices on the welfare of rice farmers. The results showed that the exchange rate of rice farmers in Tangerang Regency in 2021 experienced a significant decline. This is due to the Covid-19 pandemic which has increased the prices of farmers' consumer goods. Variables of land area, rice price, fertilizer price, and pesticide price significantly affect farmers' welfare.

Abstract

The primary role of vegetation is to provide structural support for the surrounding ecosystem, while also contributing to the visual appeal of the road environment. The presence of Green Open Space (GOS) as a venue for sustaining the urban environment is inherently essential, owing to its substantial capacity to enhance both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of urban living. This study aimed to analyze the indigenous vegetation well-suited for developing GOS along road routes within the urban center of Bekasi Regency. The study utilizes a multi-faceted approach, including field surveys, and historical data comparison, to offer a comprehensive analysis of spatial and temporal variations in vegetation diversity. The analysis of vegetation diversity involved the quantification of canopy density, dominance frequency, important/historical value, function in landscape design, and habitat profile analysis of vertical and horizontal structures. These measurements collectively provided an assessment of the state of local vegetation that is being inventoried. The vegetation in Bekasi Regency, within both GOS and urban residential areas, generally meets satisfactory standards in supporting ecological functions. However, in specific residential locations, there remains a lack of diversity in local and rare vegetation. In summary, the study underscores the pressing demand for comprehensive conservation approaches that effectively harmonize development initiatives with the protection of indigenous biodiversity. The results of this study offer a pivotal asset for policymakers and environmental planners in crafting sustainable development strategies for Bekasi Regency.

Abstract

Chili is a commodity that often triggers inflation at certain times or periods due to sudden price increases. The reason is that the availability of chilies is not sufficient for market demand due to production inefficiencies. This research aims to determine the factors that influence cayenne pepper production and determine the efficiency of using production factors using the Cobb-Douglas production function. The results of the research show that seeds and labour have a significant effect on increasing cayenne pepper farming, while land area, fertilizers, and pesticides do not have a significant effect on production. The use of production factors has not yet reached the maximum level of efficiency. Production factors that are not yet efficient are land area and labour so their utilization needs to be increased. Meanwhile, inefficient production factors are seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides so their use does not need to be increased or reduced.

Abstract

Costs of marketing and the length of marketing channels will influence the marketing margin. This research aims to determine the marketing channels for lemongrass, marketing margins, and efficiency of the marketing channels for lemongrass. A quantitative descriptive approach with marketing margin analysis was used to measure marketing margins and efficiency. The research results show that the marketing channels for lemongrass are Producers, Wholesalers, Retailers, Consumers, and Producers, Collectors, Wholesalers, Retailers, and Consumers. The performance of the lemongrass marketing channel in Marketing Channel I is a marketing margin of IDR 4,000/Kg and IDR 3,000/Kg with a marketing profit of IDR 3,083/Kg and IDR 2,432/Kg, while in Marketing Channel II the marketing margin is IDR 2,000/Kg, IDR 2,000/Kg and IDR 3,000/Kg with marketing profits of IDR 1,130/Kg, IDR 1,348/Kg and IDR 2,558/Kg. The results of the analysis show that the percentage of price share received by producers (Famer's Share) from the two marketing channels each shows above 50%, which means that both marketing channels are efficient.
