Abstract

One of Sigmund Freud's most famous works in the field of religion is Totem and Taboo (1912-1913). In this work, Freud uses psychoanalytic theory to dissect the genealogy of socio-religious phenomena in the form of totems and taboos from a philosophical-anthropological point of view, especially through his research on Aboriginal tribes in Australia. This article aims to examine Freud's contribution in the field of religion, and how it is contextualized in the socio-religious life of today's society. This study uses a qualitative approach by exploring various literatures that examine Freud's work on Totems and Taboos. The results of the study reveal that although this work tends to be problematic and particular in interpreting religion through the concepts of Totem and Taboo. However, there is a contribution from the series of arguments presented by Freud. This contribution is an invitation to purify one's intentions in carrying out religious rites, especially in today's modern society. Religious activity is no longer seen as a mechanistic ritual, but it has to be rooted from the deepest heart.

Abstract

One of the many evidences about the concepts of justice and gender equality in Islam can be seen in the creation of the plot and of a central female character in the Javanese puppet, namely Drupadi. This article employs a qualitative research with this literature study approach to determine the deconstruction character of Drupadi.  The validity of the data is obtained by triangulating data sources and integrating data from journals and books about Drupadi characters in puppets, supported by analysis of gender studies and living Qur'an studies of the concept of polyandry. The results showed that there is a deconstruction of the character of Drupadi figures from the Hindu to the Islamic version. Drupadi, who is described in the Mahabharata story of having five husbands, in a Javanese puppet show, especially after the arrival of Islam, is described only married to Yudhistira. The deconstruction of Drupadi's character as a symbol of women is no longer objectified. Drupadi's new character reflects equality between men and women in Islam.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the reasons behind the increasing number of expressing the religiosity on social media by the millennials, especially by discussing the preconditions those religious expressions. This study uses a qualitative approach with literature-based and netnographic study methods. It is also supported by interviews and observations on social media related to the activities of millennials in expressing their religiosity on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. The results showed that the massive expression of religiosity on social media by the millennial could be considered as a "resistance" against the dominant discourse, both in virtual and in the religious spaces. These dominant discourses, such as: 1) religion is a private matter, and 2) the existence of a virtual world can only be achieved by displaying an established image, academic achievement, hedonic behavior, good looking appearance and creativity. By using the idea of mimicry by Bhabha, that massive activity of expressing religiosity in the virtual space emphasizes a counter-discourse that millennials have created. This is done in a “similar” way from common social media users, in response to the dominant discourse which tends to place their religious expression and their existence on social media as two separates aspects. Mimicry shows that anyone can show their religiosity in the same ways as the common users or celebrity on Instagram, but with a different idea and interests.

Abstract

Tarekat or Sufi order is identical to various spiritual activities, often considered far from worldly life. This identification places Sufism as merely related to mystical and ascetic activities. This study intends to explain how the Al-Idrisiyah tarekat in Indonesia has primary concern on social and economic dimensions in all of their various empowerment programs in the community. The research uses qualitative methods, with data collection techniques of observation and documentation of tarekat activities on mixed social media. The study results show that the practice of the socio-economic dimension is an implementation of their belief that a true Sufi is a Sufi who works and empowers others. Their socio-economic activities have developed to resemble philanthropic activities and can help several community groups affected by the pandemic in 2020-2021.Tarekat atau sufi sering diidentikkan dengan kegiatan spiritual, yang dianggap menjauhi kehidupan duniawi.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the dynamics and challenges of the movement of a Legal Aid NGO (LANGO) in Indonesia in advocating for the rights of the weak, poor, and marginalized to gain access to justice during two decades of reform. Through historical, sociological, and political insights, this paper reveals the discursive narrative of neoliberal governmentality for the last twenty years. This study uses a qualitative method, with data collection techniques of observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with three informants from Legal Aid NGO. Using the Foucaultian analytical framework, this study finds that neoliberal governance has shaped LANGO as a managerial subject that implicitly and obediently promotes the discourse and practice of neoliberal rationality. But on the other hand, LANGO becomes an administrative subject resistant to neoliberal rationality by performing several maneuvers and tactics: promotion, contextual adaptation, avoidance/avoidance, and rejection. This contradiction and ambivalence become a severe challenge for LANGO in realizing equal access to justice for the marginalized and vulnerable in Indonesia.

Abstract

Alhamdulillah, thank you be to Allah for the publication of Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR) Vol.16 No.2 in 2022. After a little delay due to the moment of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr, JSR is able to greet all readers again. The outline of the article from this edition is the result of the 6th JSR Panel Conference held on November 24-25, 2021. The theme of the 6th panel conference is: "Social Changes After Pandemic: Reinterpreting Everyday Life of Muslim Society". Therefore, seven articles in this edition discuss various aspects of life related to how Muslim societies across the country responding to the phenomena of Covid-19 pandemic, which nearly come to the end. Meanwhile, the rest of articles in this edition are added to acknowledge other actual issues outside the boundaries of pandemic. The main articles related to the issues of Covid-19 pandemic begins with the article of Maftukha. She describes religious holydays in Indonesia, especially among Muslims and Christians in North Sulawesi contribute to strengthen the solidarity of people, which is weakened during the pandemic due to some restrictions policies in conducting daily religious activities. Similar issue is also raised by Andi Azis Putra who gives more attention on how to create social cohesion during the pandemic situation using the case of digital voluntarism in elevating religious consciousness among Indonesian netizen. Another interesting aspect in responding the Covid-19 is related to the issue of the higher usage of digital media platform in religious practices as proposed by Abd. Hannan with the issue of various disruptions in practicing religious worship, Romario with the issue of new media in portraying religious authority in the case of conspiracy discourse, Yulianti and Khoniq Nur Afifah with an issue on challenging the Islamic philanthropy in empowering Muslim society during the pandemic; Hajar Gelis Pramudyasmono with his conclusion of his research that there is no significant influence on the implementation of health’s protocols to the social and economic activities of society in Bengkulu Province, and also Ahmad Norma Permata et.al., with some interesting changes in leisure, safety, and continuity of post-pandemic tourism.Other issues outside the Covid-19 pandemic raised in this edition are related to dakwah strategy among the youth Muslims and the issues of gender. Changing the dakwah model among youth Muslims, especially in urban areas, is quite fascinating. Eko Saputra portrays how Teras Dakwah in Yogyakarta, for example, using cafes as a complementary place for mosques or other conventional religious sites to learn Islam. Learning Islam in cafes becomes more interesting phenomenon for youth Muslims in some urban areas. Gender issues are still attractive to be discussed during the pandemic era, including a traditional controversial issue on the practice of polygamy. Nur Afni Khafsoh, et.al., for instance, criticizing the practice of polygamy in Indonesia by observing the thoughts of three prominent figures of Muslim scholars in order to minimize misunderstanding on how the practice of polygamy perceived by Indonesian Muslims. Another issue related to gender and family is raised by Trias Novita Elisadayna with a paper title on “Sociological Analysis of Sexual Satisfaction in Individual with Marriage Age under Ten Years”. She concluded that physical health, strong financial support, numbers of child, and healthy relationship in child care have a positive function in creating happiness and stability in the family, including through sexual satisfaction of both partners. Last but not least, Muhammad Alhada Fuadul Habib, et.al., raised an important issue on the impacts of post-conflict in building a New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) for surrounding areas, especially related to social and economic development of the people. Finally, we hope all articles presented in this edition will enrich our knowledge and lift up our understanding on several important issues on improving the quality life of society. We are fully aware that this edition is still far from perfection, therefore we are open for any critics to preserve the quality of our journal. Thank you and enjoy reading this edition.Regards,Editor in-Chief of JSR  Achmad Zainal Arifin, Ph.D
