Abstract

Literature is represents falsehood, said Rahdar, but it is used as a unique procedure to reveal the truth. The imagination world  ia as a contact or touch between idea and language that create literary works in certain case and it becomes the autonomous area which are not necessary to be related to the reality. Although it is imaginative, it must not be irrational because the imaginative thing is also possible to happen in real life. As a work of imagination, literary work is not able to place itself as a central of legal social problems. It is caused by the fact that literary work is an imaginative work which contraries to reality so the harmony between mimesis and author's creativity to create the new thing has great role in creating the quallified literature.

Abstract

In many countries, the rate of women’s participation in labor keeps increasing from time to time because of their educational level and economic condition. This condition leads to some changes concerning the gender roles in a family. However, it does not change the division of household tasks between husband and wife. Women are still considered responsible for doing most of the household tasks. This topic is often presented as the central theme in some literary works, particularly novels. This research examines three different novels, Opening Belle, I Don’t Know How She Does It, and The Balance Project, by analyzing the inequality in dividing household tasks faced by the working mothers in the novels. This research uses a qualitative method consisting of description, reduction, and selection stages. The analysis results show that the working mothers still do most household tasks, while their husbands do not help them much. Although they can pay someone to help them do the tasks, however, the help is not as good as expected. They still have to struggle in combining household tasks and work, which eventually makes them feel exhausted.

Abstract

The objectives of the present study are four-fold: (1) to identify the types of strategies to maintain proficiency used by teachers of English in Indonesia, (2) to know the intensity of use of the obtained strategy types, (3) to measure the inter-correlation in the use of the obtained strategy types, and (4) to investigate the effect of proficiency level on the use of maintaining strategies. The subjects were 93 teachers applying for S2 degree in 2010/2011 at the postgraduate program of the Islamic University of Malang. They were given two sets of instrument, a Likert-scale questionnaire of English proficiency maintaining strategies and a TOEFL test. Then, a factor analysis identified nine strategy categories, including language focusing, metacognitive and affective developing, reading and writing activating, language resource utilizing, cognitive processing, culture learning, social communicating, text analyzing, and radio listening strategies. These strategy types explained 63.84% of variances of maintaining strategies and they were used at high level of intensity. Moreover, the use of the nine strategy types were found to be inter-correlated with one another. Finally, no significant effect of proficiency level on strategy use was found, indicating that teachers with different level of proficiency reported using the same strategies of maintaining their proficiency.

Abstract

Social aspects, including parents, are likely to influence the development of gender identity. As parents' actions and behaviours convey meaning to their children, they contribute to the formation of the children's gender identity development. The present study aims to investigate the parental influence on the gender identity development of a child character named Claude in Laurie Frankel's This Is How It Always Is. This study is a literary criticism concerning the issue of gender identity development in a literary work viewed from a psychological approach. The data were collected from a novel entitled This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel and analyzed using the social cognitive theory of gender development by Bussey Bandura (1999). The results of the study revealed that his parents influence Claude's gender identity development through the process of modelling as a part of observational learning, which is also supported by parents' evaluative reactions such as rewards or punishments. The process of modelling reveals egalitarian gender roles and sexual orientation modelled and Claude's attention to his mother as an ideal female model, alongside with how parents convey affective reactions such as acceptance and approval on Claude's gender orientation.

Abstract

The issue of words and meanings is a major topic in linguistics, and Arabic is no exception. The discourse between the true meaning and majazi (figurative) meaning is among the most fascinating areas of study for both linguists (lughawi) and theologians (ushuli). This paper focuses on the differing views between linguists and theologians regarding the ultimate meaning (hakikat) and the figurative meaning (majazi). Theologians categorize hakikat into lughawi (linguistic) and shar’i (religious/legal), while linguists distinguish between wadh’i (contextual/conventional) and ‘urfy (customary usage, which includes ‘aam for general meaning and khas for specific meaning). Similarly, the majazi meaning is further divided into lughawi (linguistic), ‘urfy (customary), and shar’i (religious/legal) meanings. The implications of this finding highlight the nuanced approach both disciplines take in understanding and interpreting language, reflecting their distinct objectives. Linguists focus on how meaning evolves within social and cultural contexts, prioritizing conventions and linguistic utility, while theologians aim to interpret meanings within religious texts, emphasizing divine intent and doctrinal coherence. This distinction underscores the interdisciplinary nature of language studies in Arabic and demonstrates how the interplay of linguistic and theological perspectives enriches the broader understanding of semantics and hermeneutics. Moreover, these findings offer valuable insights for modern linguistic and theological debates, particularly in navigating textual interpretation in contemporary contexts.

Abstract

Translation frequently conveys information about culture, knowledge, and other social interactions. It is also considered from the perspective of intercultural communication access to developments in the humanities, sciences, and technologies. It is the fastest, most effective, and most efficient approach to transmitting knowledge and technology. Therefore, it is necessary to apply translation methodologies and techniques to ascertain the translator's translation ideology. The research method used in this research is the qualitative research design. This research took samples of the translation of mechanical engineering terms in Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Heat Transfer to look for techniques, methods, and ideologies used by translators to translate these terms from English into Indonesian. The data obtained were 175, with the discovery of 109 single translation techniques, 50 double translation techniques, and six triplet translation techniques. Three translation methods are applied: the literal translation method, the faithful translation method, and the semantic translation method. From the technical data and translation methods, the researcher concludes that the ideology applied by the translator is the ideology of foreignization.
