Journal of Education and Learning (EduLearn) ISSN: 2089-9823, e-ISSN 2302-9277 is a multi-disciplinary, peer-refereed open-access international journal which has been established for the dissemination of state-of-the-art knowledge in the field of education, teaching, development, instruction, educational projects and innovations, learning methodologies and new technologies in education and learning. In Indonesia, the percentage of students dropping out from private universities is always much higher than that of public universities, and the second-highest number of dropouts comes from the engineering field. This study aims to improve the sustainability of engineering faculty in Indonesian private universities by obtaining variables that affect engineering student retention and finding the pattern for each category of student retention. Data was gathered through a questionnaire from 297 engineering faculty students. The questionnaire consists of 34 independent variables using academic performance, attitudes and satisfaction, academic engagement, social and family support, and four categories of student retention (persister, stop-out, slow-down, leaver) as dependent variables. According to discriminant analysis, grade point average (GPA) and student satisfaction in social relationships with fellow students influence engineering student retention. To increase engineering student retention, increasing student satisfaction in social relations with fellow students needs to be prioritized over GPA because the leaver and stop-out categories have a similar pattern, namely high GPA but low satisfaction with social relations with fellow students. Through this research, several efforts are proposed that need to be made by institutions to improve engineering student retention and the sustainability of engineering faculty in Indonesia.

This study examines the global issue of adolescent well-being by conducting a bibliometric analysis of 1,162 publications from the Scopus database, covering the period from 2003 to March 2023. The research aims to identify the most influential contributors, including countries, authors, journals, and key topics, within the field of adolescent well-being. The findings reveal that the USA, the UK, and Italy are the most active countries in this area of research, indicating their strong focus on adolescent well-being issues. Leading authors such as Landsverks and Barth are recognized as highly influential contributors to the field, with their work being frequently cited. The study also highlights prominent academic journals, including Children and Youth Services Review, Child Abuse and Neglect, and Journal of Youth and Adolescence, which have emerged as key platforms for disseminating research on adolescent well-being. These journals have played a crucial role in shaping academic discourse, as evidenced by their high citation counts. In terms of research topics, the analysis identifies major themes such as contributing factors to adolescent well-being and interventions aimed at improving it. These topics have been the focus of extensive research, reflecting the global concern for understanding and addressing the challenges faced by adolescents. The study provides a detailed overview of the current trends in research on adolescent well-being, offering valuable insights for future studies. Overall, the findings contribute to the growing body of literature in this area and underscore the importance of continued research on adolescent well-being at a global level.

Responding to the pivotal role of English nowadays, higher education institutions require every student to take an English course. In higher education, teaching English focuses more on the specific discipline of the students. It helps students to have good English capabilities within their field of study. Writing skill is demanded because the students are required to publish an article as a graduation requirement. In order to find suitable teaching strategies for writing, it is necessary to know the writing difficulty the students encounter. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the agriculture students’ difficulty in writing essays. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this study. The data was obtained from the interviews and students' essays. The result of the study showed that generating ideas, vocabulary, and grammar are the constraints the students faced. This study concludes that the students need a guidance on those constraints.

Sustainable development goal (SDG) 4 and 5 prioritize equal opportunities for all genders and socioeconomic backgrounds to get education. Textbook shapes students' perspectives on gender roles and possibilities for themselves and others thus playing a pivotal role in promoting equality and diversity in education. However, certain English as a foreign language (EFL) textbooks still uphold such biases in their content and images. Thus, this study aimed at describing the gender pictorial in the EFL textbook “When English rings the bells”. Applying textual along with multimodal analysis, this study analyzes the textbook following Pierce’s semiotics. Providing an in-depth analysis of how gender is represented, this study discovered that the textbook still perpetuates gender stereotypes in three areas: i) pictorial of the characters, ii) gender attributes, and iii) traditional roles. It also makes efforts to break these stereotypes by portraying diverse professions and activities. Hence, it may be inferred that the textbook made an effort to analyze and dismantle the notion of gender, yet ultimately reinforced existing preconceptions. It suggests that students can be encouraged to challenge traditional gender roles and aspire to a broader range of careers and life choices by promoting more diverse representations of males and females in textbooks.

Incorporating technology with linguistics has created opportunities to explore the effectiveness of grammar checkers in cultivating an autonomous learning culture among English as a second language (ESL) and English as a foreign language (EFL) learner. Even though there have been numerous studies on grammar checkers to cultivate autonomous learning culture in higher-education contexts, there are still limited studies in school settings. Thus, this study aims to explore the efficiency of grammar checkers in cultivating an autonomous learning culture among ESL/EFL school students. For this purpose, a qualitative study was conducted, and 13 students aged 16 years from a private Chinese school participated and shared their experiences through a questionnaire. The grammar checker Grammarly has been employed. The findings of this study showed that students found Grammarly easy to use and can correct their writing errors besides improving their grammatical and vocabulary knowledge. Students generally stated that Grammarly helps them to write with less dependence on teachers and helps them to learn the language autonomously. However, 6 out of 13 participants disagreed that Grammarly helps language use. Thus, it is important to know the challenges before employing grammar checkers in the school setting to cultivate an autonomous learning culture.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of teachers in implementing pedagogical skills. The present study used a mixed methods approach. The participants in this study consisted of 55 highly effective educators employed in vocational secondary schools. The research data were acquired using effective teacher questionnaires, peer evaluations, observations, and comprehensive interviews. The findings indicated that a majority of highly effective educators possess a strong comprehension of the practical application of pedagogical competence. Nevertheless, a marginal disparity exists between academic knowledge and its practical application in the respective domain. The facilitation and support of teachers in the development of their pedagogic competences is a crucial responsibility of school principals. Effective and well-structured ongoing training is essential to bridge the divide between theoretical concepts and practical application, and to guarantee that educators possess the requisite expertise and understanding to tackle the demands of the current and future educational landscape. Hence, it is imperative to allocate resources towards teacher professional development and ensure the availability of sufficient assets in vocational secondary schools in order to attain educational excellence in Indonesia.

This research aims to explore the role of entrepreneurial spirit in the development of multicultural Islamic education at Bahrul Maghfiroh Islamic Boarding School in Malang. Using a qualitative approach with the ethnographic case study method. The research questions are: i) what entrepreneurial spirit is used as capital in developing multicultural Islamic education at Bahrul Maghfiroh Islamic Boarding School in Malang? and ii) how does the entrepreneurial spirit contribute to the development of multicultural Islamic education at Bahrul Maghfiroh Islamic Boarding School in Malang? data and data sources were obtained through interviews, observations, and documents. This study found that the spirit of entrepreneurship plays an important role in developing multicultural Islamic education in pesantren. Capital in entrepreneurship is not always synonymous with tangible things such as money and gold. The contribution of the entrepreneurial spirit is very real and significant because it helps create an inclusive and conducive learning environment and encourages the growth of creativity and innovation among students. In addition, social entrepreneurship in the pesantren environment can also grow and develop synergistically to improve people's lives.

This study delves into information and communication technology (ICT) competency and mobile learning (m-learning) acceptance among Indonesian university students enrolled in English for specific purposes (ESP) programs across various disciplines, such as mathematics, health, management, and counselling guidance. Utilizing survey methodology with closed-ended questions involving a broad sample of non-English major ESP students from these diverse fields revealed over 60% competency in using m-learning platforms. The results underscore the extensive use of digital technology across campus for diverse functions like communication, creation, distribution, storage, and management. These tools have proven crucial for collaboration and social interaction among students. However, pedagogical factors significantly challenge m-learning adoption. This study contributes to the literature by offering insights into ICT competencies' impact on m-learning acceptance among cross-disciplinary ESP learners. The findings carry practical implications for educators, suggesting that understanding ICT competencies can enhance student outcomes and engagement in m-learning platforms. Future research is recommended to incorporate perspectives from students and lecturers on the influence of ICT competencies on m-learning acceptance in cross-disciplinary ESP programs.

Writing skills are one of the determining factors for law students' success, but it is their biggest problem. This problem stems from the lack of grammar mastery and learning barriers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this study aims to describe cognitive strategies for law students in writing opinion texts during the COVID-19 pandemic and the pedagogical implications. This study employed a mixed method. The research participants were 200 first-year students of the 2021-2022 academic year. Data collection methods are inventory and open-ended questions. The research found that students with Indonesian as first language (L1) are high in cognitive strategies, while second language (L2) students are moderate. The highest cognitive strategy is to look for reference sources on grammar rules on the internet. The correlation found a significant relationship among cognitive strategy. The most significant is the relationship between all cognitive strategies and developing explicit knowledge of grammar. Our findings provide pedagogical implication that writing instruction needs to use cognitive strategies as grammar learning strategies within a contextual-communicative approach in law. In conclusion, cognitive strategies can be used integratively in writing by emphasizing the use of explicit language knowledge and various digital sources for L1 and L2 learners.

Students' lack of interest in chemistry becomes a significant issue in chemistry learning. This may be caused by the negative perception of students about their difficulties in learning chemistry. This study aims to explore views and causes of difficulties in learning chemistry from the perspective of secondary school students. This research was designed using a survey method through a cross-grade study. The sample that participated in this study was 634 students from the Grade 10, 11, and 12 (G10, G11, and G12) of secondary school students in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, through random sampling. The data in this study were collected using the chemistry difficulties scale (CDS) and chemistry perception questions (CPQ). Statistical descriptive techniques, a one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) test, and content analysis, were used to analyse the research data. The results showed that the grade somewhat affected students' views towards chemistry. They viewed chemistry as a fairly difficult subject, with stoichiometry, thermochemistry, and macromolecule being among the most challenging topics in G10, G11, and G12, respectively. These difficulties are caused by scientific language, mathematical abilities, student abilities, and teacher competence in conducting chemistry lessons. Since the students consider chemistry somewhat difficult, chemistry teachers must take appropriate strategies to overcome these difficulties.
