Abstract

This research employs visual discourse analysis to dissect the visual elements within the film "Cinderella 2021." The primary objective is to comprehend how the film portrays notions of work, gender roles, and the significance of male and female characters, alongside embedded cultural elements. Through this analysis, the study seeks to unveil the impact of these cinematic depictions on societal perceptions, aiming to contribute to a broader discourse on enhancing perspectives within the community. The recurrent adaptations of Cinderella across various cinematic renditions offer a unique opportunity to scrutinize the evolving perspectives on gender issues throughout time. The narrative serves as a critical lens for dissecting society's attitudes towards female protagonists, their agency, and the nuanced definition of a "happy ending." Consequently, the enduring popularity of Cinderella not only attests to her timeless allure but also positions her as a cultural artifact that prompts contemplation on the intricate dynamics of gender representation within the realm of storytelling. This research sheds light on the film's potential to influence or challenge prevailing societal views, thereby fostering a more informed and progressive dialogue on gender roles and cultural representations. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the oral semantic errors made by students during their English oral presentations and to classify these errors according to the categories defined by Al-Shormani and Al-Sohbani's (2012), adapted from James' (1998) error classification theory. This study uses qualitative descriptive analysis method. The study’s population consisted of approximately 50 6th-semester English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang, with a sample size of 14 students from class 6A1, who were scheduled to perform their oral presentation. The data collection techniques used are observation and documentation. Data analysis involves several steps: identifying semantic errors, categorizing the collected semantic error, describing the corrected versions of these semantic errors, and concluding with a descriptive analysis of the semantic errors. The findings of this study found that among the fifteen semantic errors found in students’ oral presentations, lexical choice errors were the most frequent, totaling 8 errors (53%). Collocation and formal misformation had the lowest occurrence, each with only 1 error (7%). Additionally, lexical-grammatical choice errors accounted for 3 instances (20%), while formal misselection accounted for 2 errors (13%) in the study. Abstract

This study seeks to look into the impact of group discussions on the writing skills of grade X students, specifically focusing on recount texts at SMA Negeri 2 Kendal. This study aims to achieve the following objectives: (1) to gauge the writing skills of students regarding recount text when instruction is delivered without the incorporation of group discussion; (2) to evaluate the writing skills of students concerning recount text when instruction includes group discussion; and (3) to analyze the significant differences in students' writing skills on recount text between the two instructional approaches, namely without and with group discussion. This study relied on a quantitative technique and adopted a quasi-experimental design for its research probe. The data collection process involved the utilization of both pre-test and post-test equipment. The analysis of the data was conducted utilizing the IBM SPSS version 27. The analysis of the data indicated that students who engaged in group discussions demonstrated superior performance compared to those who did not participate in such discussions. The students participating in the experimental class achieved an average score of 56.97 on the pre-test, which increased to 73.46 on the post-test. This suggests that a significant disparity exists between students who received instruction that included group discussions and those who did not engage in such collaborative learning experiences. Abstract

This study examines Whitney Houston’s song “The Greatest Love of All” through the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) lens, focusing on the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions outlined by M.A.K. Halliday. The analysis, employing a qualitative methodology, reveals how the lyrics articulate self-empowerment, personal growth, and societal responsibility themes. The ideational metafunction emphasizes the representation of encounters, such as the significance of sustaining future eras and grasping self-love and its transformative potential. The interpersonal metafunction highlights the relationship flow between the singer and the gathering of people, utilizing a high disposition of revelation and methodology to motivate certainty and specialization. In the meantime, the printed metafunction ensures topical coherence and consistency through structural harmony. Thus, revealing the etymological processes in the song, this thought demonstrates how music acts as a powerful means of expressing the passionate and ideological messages that resonate within it. Abstract

This research investigates students' experiences during presentations, focusing on the challenges they face and the strategies they employ to overcome them. The study aims to provide deeper insights into the barriers students encounter when presenting, as well as the strategies they use to address these challenges effectively. The research uses a qualitative approach, with data collected from six students in the English department at a university in Central Java through online interviews. The results of the study reveal that the participants face several barriers, such as the fear of judgment, physical symptoms of anxiety, uncertainty about the topic, and difficulties in creating effective and interactive presentation media. To overcome these obstacles, the participants use various strategies, including thorough preparation (such as creating PowerPoint slides), practicing their presentations, and seeking feedback from peers or instructors. Other strategies involve using self-affirmation, incorporating humor or jokes to engage the audience, and snapping fingers to help refocus and break awkward moments. These findings highlight the importance of preparation and coping mechanisms to manage anxiety and ensure effective communication during presentations.
