Abstract

This article aims to reveal the political thoughts of Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im regarding the concept of a secular state. The material object of this study is An-Na'im's political thought in the form of a secular state concept which is reviewed using epistemology as its formal object. The results of this study explain that: first, the basic assumption of An-Na'im's political thought is a post-secularist worldview. Second, the paradigm is anthropocentric positivism. Third, the framework is constitutionalism, human rights, and citizenship. All these three are used by An-Na'im primarily to make sharia relevant to the context of a modern state. Viewed from an Islamic perspective, the epistemology of An-Na'im's political thought is problematic because after all, post-secularism is still rooted in the principle of separation of state and religion. Making post-secularism a basic assumption is a form of confusion in perspective. Making anthropocentric positivism a paradigm also means placing human knowledge as the main truth. Likewise, framing sharia within the framework of constitutionalism, human rights, and citizenship is a step that has the potential to ignore aspects of the maslahat contained in sharia.

Abstract

This study aims to see how the concept of Islamic aesthetics in the thought of Abdul Hadi WM. Aesthetics is an interesting discourse to study because aesthetics is one of the five branches of philosophy that relate to values that are contained in something or arise from human actions. Although the values contained in aesthetics are very important and are always relevant in human life, the fact is that aesthetics receive less attention in philosophical studies. One reason is the narrow view that aesthetics is only related to art. Abdul Hadi WM sees an important aesthetic in the realm of philosophy and is related to human aesthetic experience. Islamic aesthetics essentially refers to the expression of religious values and can bring awareness to the spiritual realm

Abstract

Hermeneutics has changed the paradigm of the study of contemporary Islamic thought towards the direction of Islamic science, placing modern Islamic issues into the discourse of theodiplomacy. Many modernist scholars have initiated an overhaul of the concept of "soar skyward" Islam, offering through hermeneutics a "down-to-earth" idea of Islam. Hermeneutics has given birth to various controversies through the use of the methods "to explain," "to interpret," and "to say," ignoring the approaches of al-shadaf (charismatic study), al-lubab (essence study), tahqiq (ensuring the exploration of the position of words), and tadqiq (comparing to the opinions of competent scholars). This study was conducted using qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The results showed that hermeneutics has initiated the occurrence of rereading, reinterpretation, rethinking, renewing, and rebuilding to strive for adjustments toward the new Islamic order. Therefore, the existence of Hermeneutics does not make calculations of right and wrong, strong and weak, black and white, and Islam-West in every interpretation of the Qur'an. It's just that the interpretation of modernity issues carried out by the approach of Islamization of science and applied Islamology giving birth to various worldview controversies such as Progressive Islam, pluralist Islam, humanist Islam, and reverse Islam.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of interfaith conflict and consensus between Islam and Christianity within the Tolaki community of Konawe, Sulawesi. Despite sharing common cultural roots, the Tolaki community exhibits contrasting patterns of interfaith relations in the districts of Lambuya and Wolasi. This study employs an interpretive paradigm and a phenomenological approach. The analysis integrates Moustakas' phenomenological framework with the data analysis model developed by Miles and Huberman. Findings reveal that factors such as traditional values, leadership, and shared social practices contribute to harmonious relations in Lambuya, while differing historical contexts and localized social dynamics in Wolasi exacerbate tensions.  Additionally, local values such as kolasara and the role of traditional elders are proven to be crucial in maintaining religious harmony in both Lambuya and Wolasi district.

Abstract

Islamic epistemological discourse, such as polygamy, contains a variety of opinions (multi-opinion). Polygamy is a debate among Muslim scholars. Some argue that polygamy is permissible, while others prohibit it. On the other hand, the Qur’an and hadith allow polygamy as long as certain conditions are met. This article aims to explain the epistemology of Muhammad Syahrur's Islamic thought and its implications for the study of polygamy hadith. This is qualitative research based on library data reference sources. The research findings show that: First, the study of Muhammad Syahrur's Islamic epistemology is based on three important aspects, namely the condition of being (al-kainūnah), the condition of process (As-Sairūrah) and the condition of becoming (As-Hairūrah). Second, Muhammad Syahrur's thoughts are based on the logic of historical aspects of the past which refer to the polygamy hadith regarding the conditions for polygamy, namely 1) a polygamous woman is both a widow and a mother (having children); and 2) a man who practices polygamy must fairly provide physical and spiritual support to their wives and children. This thinking is based on Syahrur's scientific epistemology in constructing religious studies. Third, Muhammad Syahrur's scientific epistemology is influenced by four aspects, namely mihwar regarding philosophy, theological, anthropological, and naturalistic regarding environmental or natural conditions.

Abstract

This study agrees that the theory of anthropocentrism environmental ethics has a weakness because it places human interests as a moral standard, but this research disagrees with the view that this weakness is influenced by religion. Conversely, religion is an important factor for the improvement of the theory of anthropocentrism environmental ethics. This study uses a qualitative method where data is obtained through tracking and reading various literature. The collected data were analyzed with hermeneutic and heuristic theories. This study found that the weakness of the theory of anthropocentrism environmental ethics lies in its scope which is only in the interests of humans. This weakness is seen as influenced by religious understanding that places humans as the center of the universe so that it gives rise to exploitative attitudes in humans. This view is wrong because in religion (Islam) humans are indeed given a high position, but with a great responsibility to protect nature. The reconstruction of this view leads to a new form of environmental ethics, namely theo-anthropocentrism in which it is hoped that humans can act wisely on the universe as God's representatives in the world.

Abstract

The content of Surah al-Nisāʼ in the Qur'an is full of messages regarding the importance of empowering women. However, many Muslim communities still underestimate and marginalize women, rendering them less empowered. This research describes women's empowerment in Islam and moderate interpretations of Qur'anic verses related to women. It analyzes the verses about women empowerment in Surah al-Nisāʼof the Quran, referring to several fair interpretations and linking them to field phenomena. The results show that the Qur'an is a holy book that supports women's empowerment, an aspect perceived to have social, economic, health, spiritual, and legal dimensions in Surah al-Nisāʼ. It is urgent to empower women to live worthy and equal to men. This research is expected to help understand the verses on moderate women’s empowerment equally and justly as men in building a civilization on earth.

Abstract

Although Nahdlatul Ulama has positioned itself to return to khittoh, the establishment of the Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB) in 1998 shows the political identity of this organization. In turn, the Kyai became central figures in playing the social and political role of Nahdlatul Ulama. This article focuses on examining the identity relationship of the Kyai Nahdlatul Ulama in the social and political space in Indonesia. This article uses a qualitative method characterized by naturalistic descriptiveness. This article uses a critical paradigm to capture and analyze special relationships in the dynamics of identity construction of NU and PKB. The results of the study show that the factors of nomos, doxa, habitus, conjuncture, actors, capital, and dimensions in Bourdieu's social concept are correlated with kyai and ulama as the dominant factors that color and influence the journey of the two organizations. The optimization of the social capital of NU and PKB is the mainstream of political forces facing the executive and legislative elections. Charismatic leadership and the similarity of mabda' siyasi are two important factors that determine the direction, steps, and orientation of the two organizations to be inclusive or exclusive.

Abstract

This research discusses the dialectics of Islam and culture in the syara mangato adat mamakai tradition in forming the social structure of the Rencong Telang community in Kerinci Jambi. The existence of the culture of Rencong Telang Indigenous People is increasingly disappearing with the arrival of the Synchretic Islamic and Puritan Islamic civilizations. This research employed qualitative research with a phenomenological approach and multiple cases. Data was collected through documentary research, secondary data collection, participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD). The results of the research find that the tradition of syara mangato adat mamakai shows the dialectics of Islam and culture in forming the social structure of the Rencong Telang indigenous community. In this case, Islam is one of the sources of applicable norms and customary law. The social life of the Rencong Telang community is regulated through traditional institutions which are manifested in the formulation of four customs and four laws. The four customs contain traditional principles. Meanwhile, Law Four is in the form of technical and applied regulations.
